AFC Miami: Chad Pennington - Free agent Pittsburgh: Ben Roethlisberger - Draft, 1st round Baltimore: Joe Flacco - Draft, 1st round Tennesee: Kerry Collins - Free agent Indy: Peyton Manning - Draft, 1st round San Diego: Phil Rivers - Draft, 1st round NFC: NY Giants: Eli Manning - Draft, 1st round Philadelphia: Donovan McNabb - Draft, 1st round Minnesota: Tavarias Jackson - Draft, 2nd round Carolina: Jake Delhomme - Free Agent Atlanta: Matt Ryan - Draft, 1st round Arizona: Kurt Warner - Free Agent 12 teams, more then half drafted in the 1st round. Two of the other 5 teams drafted 1st round QB's with the intention of their current starters being backups by this point (Arizona, Tenn). My point is assuming Favre doesn't come back I think we seriously need to look heavily at the idea of trading up to get an elite QB prospect. More then ever it has become a quarterback driven league and while the defense slumped the 2nd half of the year that's the position that I think most would agree with held us back. The interesting thing about the way the draft has been set up the only teams I could see taking a QB in the top 10 are Detroit at 1 and possibly San Fran at 10. The Lions are a given but Singletary may feel the pressure to have a good 2009 to hold off the Holmgren rumors so he may go elsewhere. Bottom line is if both Stafford and Bradford were to come out, and it's not a given but I think it might, I think you trade this years 1st and 2nd and maybe next year's 2nd and 3rd to move up to maybe 9, take Bradford and try to duplicate the success Atlanta and Baltimore has had by having a rookie QB with a strong power running game and solid defense.
I agree. I was thinking about this the other day. It's time we draft a franchise QB. We haven't taken one in the first round since Chad Pennington.
Chad and Collins were 1st round picks in the draft as well. Just not for those teams. Tavaris being the only 2nd rounder Warner and Delhomme being the UDFA
Yeah, but the main difference between those teams and this team is that those teams stick with their personell. I know we all clamoured for Mangini's head, and were more than happy to put Pennington out in the cold, and rightfully so. Both of those guys were bums, maybe Mangini less so. But Chad had 8 years to prove himself, we weren't going to wait forever. If this organization does go for a QB in the draft, and opts not to go with Ratliff, then I really think they should take the time to develope him. Thing is, he's going to need to really prove himself the first 3 or 4 years if he plans on sticking around on this team.
i agree that we need to get a qb but that maybe too steep to move up into the top 10.put that on top of having the 6 pick last year and now we have 2 huge contracts taking up alot of cap space.hopefully sanchez comes out also.that would increase the chances of one falling far enough we would'nt have to move that far up if at all to get the future.
Kaiser are you crazy? We were right to cut Chad? We go 12-4 with chad as our qb easily. We were dumb to cut him. He was 2nd in the league in MVP voting behind peyton. 2ND !@@!#!@#
You cant prove that , so to say we would be anything with one QB vs. The other is silly! Chads time had come. I'm glad for him over there , but I do not question the time to move on had come. If he win a SB then I will truly know that Karma exists and Destroyed us this year. :breakdance:
Not really. Pennington did better in 2007 with garbage line than Favre this year. Had more TDs than INTs unlike Favre and better ratings. With the good line like we have this year, Chad is MPV candidate. Is our line really worse than Miami? We have a great RB as well. Last year we had no RB. I think it is pretty conclusive that today Chad is MUCH better QB than old Favre, and that counts for a few wins, wouldn't you say?
The last thing we need is another Chad vs Favre debate. The point is exactly what Jetsfan said. Ratliff looked great in his limited time in the first two preseason games but recent history has shown unless you have Tom Brady, the best 6th round pick ever or a Mike Martz offense with Marshall Faulk as your running back you have to have a highly touted QB to win a Super Bowl.
Whatever we do at QB this year, we need to trade up and get a QB in the draft. Maybe even have Favre for 1 more year and have the new guy learn from him and battle Ratliff for #2 spot. I am just very worried about our FO ability to make good draft choices.
In a questionable draft class for QB's, we'd be reaching most certainly if we were to grab a QB. Warner was an undrafted QB and Brady/Hasselback were late round pickups. Now Im not saying those will always pan out or anything but it'd be tough to invest a pick in a QB that's in what looks to maybe be a weak class.
There's really only 1, maybe 2 QBs worthy of the elite tag this year, Bradford and Stafford. Bradford may not even leave OU this year. This is not the year to draft a franchise QB.
If Mark Sanchez declares, we need to draft him. He's a beast and has all the tools to be a Top QB in the NFL.
I guarantee if Chad played with the Jets this year he would've been lucky to get a backup job in the NFL next year. Our problem wasn't personnel, it was coaching. Mangini / Schottenheimer fucked over Favre, they would've fucked over Chad too. Noodle Arm, etc wouldve been the talk of the town had we kept him.
