Orlando Pace has been released by the Rams.

Pace, 33, was taken by the Rams as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1997 draft and has been with the team since then. He was a staple at left tackle, earning seven trips to the Pro Bowl. Pace was hampered by injuries in recent seasons. A knee injury caused him to miss two games and part of a third this past season.

The Rams save $6 million under the salary cap by letting Pace go.

Statement by Rams owner Chip Rosenbloom:

?I can?t begin to thank Orlando for all he has meant to the Rams organization, since we selected him with the first overall pick in the 1997 draft. It is never easy to end a relationship that has had as much success as ours, but in the best interest of Orlando and the Rams, we feel now is the right time.

?As a Super Bowl Champion and seven-time Pro Bowler, he has been a true professional and will always go down as one of the finest Rams of all time. We wish him, Carla and their children the very best as they move onto the next chapter of their football journey.?

Statement by Rams general manager Billy Devaney:

?Orlando Pace has been a mainstay on the Rams? offensive line since he was drafted in 1997, and has proven to be one of the most efficient offensive tackles throughout his career. We thank him for all that he has done for the St. Louis Rams and we wish him the best for the remainder of his career.?

All for now . . . more later today, hopefully

And this means: With the 2nd pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select Jason Smith, OT, Baylor (Unless the Lions take him for some reason)

They're the Lions so don't count out Michael Crabtree with that first pick

Well, yeah. Some thought they'd hold off on an OT with the 2nd overall pick and go for Michael Crabtree or Aaron Curry. But now that about settles it since both tackle positions are in serious question.

I am getting old. I was still in college when Pace was drafted, that was the first mistake of the parcells era trading away that top pick. We would have had a franchise LT for a decade+.

St Louis gave us a 1st, 3rt, 4th and 7th to move up 5 spots and take him. Still not sure who got the better end of that deal. He was the model for what a LT should be. Looking back at who we took in that draft there is no doubt St Louis got the better deal by far.

Still not sure? I think we got Farrior, Dedric Ward and leon Johnson. All 3 were gone by the end of the 2001 season. farrior had one good year for us in 5 years, Ward was nothing mroe than a nice #3 and leon was a great STer for 1 year before injuries derailed his career. We got fleeced.

I became sure when I looked. You didn't mention our 1st overall pick in the 2nd round, Rick Terry. Did he die or something before camp opened? I don't think I have ever heard his name before anywhere. We also took somebody named Terry Day in the 4th. Lamont Burns, the first overall in round 5. We did great, didn't we?

I was mentioning the guys we picked w/ the selctions we got from SL. The rest of the draft outside of Jason ferguson(who we only got b/c he slid after he failed a drug test) was as bad as a team has ever had. Terry, Day, Bruns, Austin, Scharf, Clements, Rosga. Just embarrassing.
