There seems to be a lot of talk on the board lately regarding the draft and our need at Wideout. We should draft Percy Harvin, or Hakeem Nicks, or Maclin..etc etc. Perhaps our need for a WR has been under our noses the entire time.

Here's an article (maybe a little bit of a fluff piece, because it's from nyjets.com....but still relevant) that pleads Clowney's case. Personally, I think David Clowney deserves a shot to fill Coles' shoes. He's young, fast...and with Ellard's coaching...could be our answer for a top wideout. Any thoughts?

It's a possibility I suppose, I'm just worried that if we're gonna be a run heavy team that we're gonna call a lot of short plays, especially slants. If that's the case, he's gonna take a beating and I don't know if he could handle it

But we'll never know until we find out.

Sorry to everyone that's going to miss out on training camp, but this guy is one of the reasons I hope they relocate somewhere near Albany. I think he has a real good shot to win that #2 spot. That 4.3 speed has to get you excited.

    #1 Cotch
    #2 Clowney
    #3 Stuckey
    #4 B. Smith

It's refreshing to see this kid's attitude...It's not all about him, but he's willing to work for the spot. And he's confident enough to let people know that he's willing to work, and why shouldn't the #2 spot be his?? He knows the system by now, and I'm assuming he has a nice relationship with Ratliff (I'm going by their similar age, and preseason stats together only). I'm excited to see what he can do in 2009.

I am sure defense will be really scared of that line up esp with clemens or ratlif at qb. The only hope is that passing game could be average but it could among the worst thats what worries me

nice article on Clowney but why settle for #2 when you could be a #1 WR

why? because we don't have a big name wideout on our roster?

Clowney is capable of stretching the field and he's shown he's got some decent hands (that ridiculous catch he made against Buf last season sold me).....give the kid a chance.

My only concern is that Clowney is only 6'0....so we're still lacking that tall redzone target....but he defenitly has the potential to fill the "burner" role.....and the kid is only 23.

I think the kid is actually showing Cotch some respect...It's not often you see that anymore. Cotch has been around longer, and has more catches, TD's, etc. Thats all that is...Respect.

I really believe Henry Ellard is gonna make something out of Clowney, Cotchery, Stuckey and Smith this year. I know we'll be a run-first, smashmouth offense....but still, I'm excited to see how the receivers respond this year.

Maybe Clowney steps up and DOES scare defenses with the 4.3 speed if he can run good routes and display good hands? Maybe Clemens or Ratliff will do fine after having been in the same system for years and having a solid oline and running game to help them?

I know there are a lot of question marks and I'm not ready to crown any of these kids but to dismiss them as shitty before TC even starts is about as negative as Champ.

I said they could be average. Going into the season with unknowns at wr and qb is very big risk. It would make sense to draft or bring in players at wr and qb. I am not saying clowney, ratliff or clemens cant be players.

Clowney & Ratliff were 2 guy's that were mentioned about not getting enough playing time under Mangini and the FO was really high on them. Obviously Ratliff had to sit because of Favre but the fact that Clowney didn't see the field when healthy was perplexing.
I really would be disappointed if we draft a WR because i really think Stuckey, Cotch, & Clowney will be a really good group of wideouts.
Also, it is really hard for a rookie WR to really make an impact his first season. I say RB in Rd.1. I know i'll get flack about this but another RB would extend TJ's career and keep LW fresh all game. I think we need another RB more then WR. Just my opinion.

Drafted players are unknowns too. These guys have to get real NFL experience at some point. I'd say they're a little more than unknown to the CS too.

That would be my luck, they move up here just as I get out of school. Of course I'm moving to NH so I'll get my healthy dose of Patsie faithful around that time instead

On topic, although I'd like to grab a WR in the first or second, I'm thoroughly excited to see what Clowney could bring to the table. His speed and athleticism lend me to want a Hakeem Nicks or Brian Robiskie in the first two rounds more than burners like Maclin, Harvin, and DHB (the latter two I don't want at all). This draft is going to be very interesting.

    Surprise at #2 WR

I had the opportunity to speak with a Jets offensive player at a function recently. I mentioned Clowney and he really surprised me by saying that he thought Brad Smith would be the team's #2 WR. He seemed fairly confident about it, too.

I will not mention the player's name because I don't feel that's appropriate in this forum, but I do think that his thoughts warrant attention. Very few of us have figured we'd see Brad Smith in that role.

If we're going with Cotch as our #1, I'd really prefer to see a larger receiver opposite him. I can see Clowney as a solid and heavily used #3, a la Anthony Gonzalez.

Clowney is not a slot guy though. He needs to be on the outside.

What about Marcus Henry the big guy we drafted last year. I like our WR corps with the exception of Brad Smith. I think an experienced WR coach/player like Ellard could really polish the young talent we got on our team.

I would like to see him get a chance too. As for the height issue, Keller and Smith are 6'2, though I would say Keller would be the only real "red zone threat" over Smith. I guess it goes back to the debate over height or speed.

why is that? you put a speed guy in the slot and you can create a lot of problems for their safeties

i wouldn't put a guy on the outside unless he was an above average route runner or had above average height
