You're missing a concept though. Here's an example: When we play the Pats, Wes Welker tears us up. Why? Revis covers Moss. Let's say Moss gets cut and signs with the Bengals for more than he's worth. Welker becomes #1 WR and Revis covers him. Do you think he is less successful because he commands the team's top corner, or MORE successful because you assume he sees more looks as #1 WR. Coles has been the established name and commanded coverage priority for most of his tenure in New York. That started to fade last year, and despite a more prolific passing game overall, Cotchery finished well below his 2007 career highs. Even if you assume they split the attention of a team's top corner, cotch will have FULL attention this year as the most established option, by far. Cotchery has a shot at matching his best in catches (82), but at 13.8 yards per? I highly doubt it. Get ready for a Derrick Mason season: 70-90 catches for 950-1100 yards. Cotch will line up against Dunta Robinson, Shaun Springs [but it's the Pats], Cortland Finnegan in his first 3 weeks. He's going to have to earn a career year. Throw names like Asomugha and Rashean Mathis on the schedule, too.
8-8 or 9-7. No shame in this record with a tough sched. and rookie QB. (I'm assuming he'll be starting by Game 8)
That's a problem we're going to have to wrap our heads around soon. At what point would you switch? 4-4? 2-4? Then, if we do switch, presumably it will be because we've already stunk up a handful of games with Clemens. If we're a playoff team in 2009, it will likely be under one quarterback or the other for the entire season. And, frankly, if the kid shows that he can effectively learn on the job, I'd rather give him the ball on day one. Clemens, I've seen.
You make some good points. I just have a feeling it will shake out that way because I'm really not sold on Clemens. I agree wholeheartedly to give Sanchez the ball from day one. However I just think Clemens knows the system better (obviously) and will gain the coaches trust in TC. I'm not so confident that will remain the case when he gets in real game action and then, after some frustration and calls for a switch, the rook will get brought in. Again, just a feeling coming from a cynical Jets fan. I really hope we have one QB the whole year as well cuz that would mean we're winning or doing some things right.
The Jets will win anywhere between 1 to 16 games and lose anywhere from 1 to 16 games...just thought I throw my lousy 2 cents in.
Switching, if it comes to that, will have nothing to do with record. If Sanchez doesn't start from game 1 he will as soon as they determine he is ready. The only thing that can change that would be if Clemens won the first 4 or 5 games and I don't think anybody sees that coming with this year's schedule.
I agree. Everyone knows it's going to be Sanchez at the top of the depth chart eventually. It's a matter of finding that time when the coaching staff feels he can succeed in the position. I don't see a desperation move if they don't feel Sanchez is ready yet.
the jets being the typical jets could name sanchez the starter before preseason ends rex ryan is here not the predictable eric mangini remember that.
I'm not sure we're disagreeing, but you're making a distinction without a difference. If Clemens starts the season and plays well, he will continue. Of course. If Clemens starts the season and is mediocre or bad, he will be replaced. Of course. If Clemens starts the season and is mediocre, but Sanchez is showing absolutely nothing in practice or otherwise, Clemens will STILL be replaced. More than likely.
Ya ok... have you by any chance looked at our schedule?? We'll be lucky to win 9 games next year with a rookie QB and new coach. Don't become a Giants fan and overhype your team.
^Agreed. What most people, including the OP, don't understand... Option 1 is best thing that could happen this season. Option 3 would be desparation move, and bad in both the short and long term.
How is option 1 the best thing when Sanchez is suppose to be our franchise QB. Wouldn't the best thing be Sanchez starts and does well??
It means we have two guys who can possible be starters. Every team needs to have a solid back-up QB. If Clemens does well then there is no rush to bring in Sanchez. He can sit and learn, which would might be the best thing.
I was looking for a 2008 prediction but I found this instead. http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=33028
