Watching NFL Replay of the game. Particularly interested in seeing how close Sanchez came to escaping on the second down play in the red zone. At the game, it looked as though he was thisclose to escaping and running it in. Now I see what happened. Alan Faneca, Tannenbaum's vastly over-rated, over the hill $42million dollar mistake got beaten like a drum on 2nd and 6, and then again on 3rd and 6 to destroy any chance of a comeback victory. What a fucking waste this signing was. Tannenbaum needs to fix this mess he's created by finding a talented guard in the draft, and complete the job he started when he drafted Mangold and Ferguson.
You know, up until now, I was actually able to go through today without thinking of this fact. Thanks. Thank God, it's NBA season.
Faneca sucks. how the fuck did this guy make the probowl 8 times with his complete inability to pass-protect?
Yeah, Faneca's decline started back in Pittsburgh, which was clearly why they let him walk. I was glad we signed him at the time even knowing that because we needed a solid guard.. but his contract is ridiculous. Going into this past draft I mentioned we needed to find a replacement for Faneca so we'd have someone to step in and I got heat for it, but it's the truth. He's a great veteran presence who makes a lot of heads-up plays, but at the same time his inconsistent pass protection makes him the weak link on that line. IMO, anyway.
i have been saying it since the day we signed him. Faneca's contract is insane, and needs to be terminated the second we hit March 1st with the uncapped year. He is by far our weakest OL and in my eyes even last year as our highest paid (and highest profile) OL most people refused to see that he was our weakest pass protector (giving up 7.5 sacks I believe) and was only above average against the run. He was probably our 3 best OL last year, behind Mangold and Ferguson. We needed an upgrade terribly bad at LG, and I wanted us to go with a younger guy like Jacob Bell, but to be honest, it wouldnt matter because neither has been an upper echelon guard, but all the same Faneca needs replacing next year.
Doesn't help when the D knows you are going to pass and it doesn't relieve Schotty from responsiblity either.
How the heck was it schottys fault that the ST and Shon Greene gave up 21 points to the Phins? Also the other 4 guys werent getting beat on that last drive. Also Faneca has been our worst pass blocking lineman since the day we signed him. His run blocking has been going down hill since about week 5 last year. He is barely an above average OL at this point. How sad is it, that Faneca is where he is, and he is still in another universe compared to Adrian Clarke?
+1. We picked up a declining talent due to the panic of having to start Adrien Clarke for a season. Faneca's agent sensed our panic and got a huge victory for his client.
Point the finger at whoever you want, but Schotty definitely could have have made some better play calls in the red zone. And Faneca might not be good at pass protection but he CAN still run block at a high level. Which brings us back to exhibit A - that Schotty needs to learn when to run the ball and when to get fancy.. and if there's any doubt, just run it. And comparing Faneca to Adrian Clarke? Seriously? That's like comparing apples to moldy, rotten, worm-ridden apples left to decompose in the summer sun. Anyone's going to look fresh compared to Adrian motherfucking Clarke.
Faneca is old. He's an awesome run blocker and can pull around very well, but its his pass blocking that has failed for a couple of years now. He needs to be replaced, but until there is a player who can step in and continue at the very least the production he is at now you can't just cut him - then you get a Adrien Clarke situation and a dead QB in Sanchez. Let's be smart about this. The "cut faneca" threads can't come out for the fuck of it.
I was merely pointing out, that even as bad as I think Faneca has been for us he is still an infinite upgrade over Clarke
Yeah but anyone would have been an upgrade over Clarke. The guy was a scrub and was only starting because we traded disgruntled Pete Kendall in the preseason. edit: lol, I was kind of preoccupied so it took me a while, but I just realized we're arguing the same point...
The point of the post was not to blame Faneca...if Tannenbaum is stupid enough not to sign a servicable Pete Kendall for 1MM and give AF a $42MM golden parachute into retirement, he'd be a fool not to take kit. The Jets do have a lot of young, promising talent behind both lines of scrimmage...but they will never be true Super Bowl contenders until our GM takes the slow, painful steps required to build a solid pair of lines in front of them. Lines stocked with young players who will grow together into savvy veterans. Imagine how dangerous players such as Pace, Harris, and Revis would be with some solid defensive ends collapsing the pocket in addition to Jenkins? Imagine how dominant Jenkins could be for a full season if he had a true young heir to spell him during the game? Imagine how good Mark Sanchez will look when he actually has time to find his 3rd receiver? It's incumbent upon the GM to recognize where he has dropped the ball, OR it's up to the owner to wake up, grow a pair and step in and tell the GM, "enough--stop trying to impress me or the media with your splashy 3 for 1 draftpick giveaways! Build me a team for the long haul, with powerful lines that can dominate the game. I would like to see the GM send some of our overrated name players, such as Kerry Rhodes away and recover picks in return, and build an offensive line that can finish a game.
Kendall was also on the skids, plus he's a perpetual malcontent. That's why he's unemployed right now. We could have settled for him but with money to burn, Faneca was the better option.
There was an article linked by Kelly some time ago that said that Mangold was called Maneca by his OL teammates because everything Faneca did, he did it too. This was the biggest thing about Faneca, showing D'brick, Mangold and Moore how a professional Pro Bowl O-lineman works day in day out. I think however that his role is now fullfilled and that he should step out of his starting position... Rex mentioned he would take a look at benching some of the starters and Faneca is currently the weak spot in that line. Personally I'd like to see the CS give Turner a chance, but I think nothing will happen until the end of the season...
I also have a question... if we always run on the right side (and we always do) why do e keep our best run blocking OG on the left side?! If you want to have Faneca at least use him for what he does best damn it! Ps and at least if he lets someone go through on passing plays Sanchez can see him and not get the sack from his blind side.
You keep Faneca on the left side because if you hand the left side to Brandon Moore he'll turn into a turnstile also. He's a powerful run blocker, but he's not quick on his feet and you need that on the left side. The difference between the left side and the right side is primarily that with the tightend lined up right the blocking assignments on that side are simpler, there are fewer variables and less chance that the tackle is going to have to suddenly switch off to blocking a blitzing linebacker, forcing everybody inside of him to adjust at the snap - without so much as moving a muscle before it. Turner would be the one to try at left guard if the Jets were going to make a change. He's the one who might be able to pull that off, because we don't know that he can't yet - unlike Faneca and Moore. Personally I think the answer is not to make a change at this point. The answer is to run left more than the Jets are, cutting down the number of passes that Sanchez is asked to throw in response to a 22 per game level, and making the defensive players on that side of the line worried about over-committing on that side and getting trapped upfield while a back goes for 7 or 8 through their gap. The Jets can replace Faneca in the off season.
