Tim Wakefield signs 2 year deal with the Boston Red Sox 1:48pm: Bradford confirmed in an email that the deal has been finalized. 1:28pm: WEEI.com's Rob Bradford says the new deal will guarantee Wakefield $5MM ($3.5MM in 2010, $1.5MM in 2011), with incentives that could push the total value of the deal up to $7MM.
According to WEEI.com's Rob Bradford, the Red Sox will not pick up Jason Varitek's $5MM option for 2010. Varitek now has five days to decide on the $3MM player option portion of the contract. He could also earn another $2MM in incentives based on games started next season. The 37-year-old team captain hit just .209/.313/.390 in 425 plate appearances in 2009, losing his starting catcher's job to Victor Martinez late in the season and in the playoffs.
Joe Capozzi of the Miami Herald writes that there are "indications" that Dan Uggla will be traded by next month's winter meetings. The 29-year-old pounds out 30+ homer seasons like they're going out of style, but he made $5.35MM in just his first year of arbitration in 2009. He'll be expensive, but he is a great youngish bat.
No surprise here, though now it's official: The Red Sox have exercised their $7.1MM option for Victor Martinez according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe. This was about as much of a no-brainer as they come. The 30-year-old Martinez hit .303/.381/.480 this season, .336/.405/.507 after coming to Boston at the trade deadline. He split his time in the field almost equally between catcher and first base, and FanGraphs values V-Mart's 2009 production at $21.9MM.
Ken Griffey Jr agreed to a 1-year deal with the Seattle Mariners, which will undoubtedly be his final season.
3:47pm: Varitek exercised his option to return to the Red Sox, writes Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. Waste of $3m bucks.
Holliday and Bay? That makes absolute no sense. In fact, on the Fan this morning, they said that supposedly Adam Wainwright was on a talkshow and said that Holliday wants to remain in St. Louis. Time will tell though.
I want them both because the Red Sox lacked power, and they have it, that's all. I know it's not ideal/smart/gonna happen, but fuck it.
You know what doesn't make sense? Rubbing buttersticks on your nipples. Did it make sense for the Yankees to bring in baseball's best player (a shortstop) when Jeter wasn't giving up the spot? If you can manage to have both on your team in the AL East, you do it. You make room for Holliday.
I agree. I knew the Yankees could afford it, but I thought it was only a pipe dream that theyd sign both teixiera and Sabathia....but it happened. I'd prefer they didnt, but the Sawx could certainly get both Bay and Holliday.
