Miller It's looking like New York Jets cornerback Lito Sheppard(notes) shouldn't be planning on how to spend that $10 million roster bonus he would have coming to him in March if he was still on the team. The word is that he won't be and there will be no payout, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. The paper is reporting that the Jets will lose two other members of the secondary as well: safety Kerry Rhodes(notes) and cornerback Donald Strickland(notes). Sheppard was injured all season and pulled in only one interception in the 11 games he played this season. He pretty much rode the pine during the AFC Championship loss last weekend. The injury-prone Strickland will likely get released. ----------------------------------- out of the 3, I would much rather have strickland back. And we can't just cut rhodes, we need to get something for him. Take it with a grain of salt it is the rumor mill.... but we have been thinking mostly the same thing anyways...
Not buying all of that...... Lito - yes - bye,bye Rhodes - no way I see this happening unless he makes totally ridiculous contract demands Strickland - can see this one, if we keep Lowery for depth and draft or deal for a #1 RCB, but sure hope we have a solid plan for replacement if we do this because he's about the best of what we have for that side.
rhodes is still under contract.we cut or trade him.that said, some of the good feelings for the future disappeared reading this.
I was listening to the same interview on the Michael Kay show. When Michael Kay asked Rex what the chances of Rhodes being back next year where, Rex said he had a private conversation with Rhodes yesterday and that he wanted to keep that conversation private. Then he asked Rex what were the chances Braylon would be back next year and he said "100%, he's part of the nucleus of this team and with an offseason together with Mark he expects the offense to be more balanced next year". I also thought it was interesting when Michael Kay asked Rex about Braylon's post game comments Rex laughed about it and said it was one of those things where Braylon came to them and said "ohh man that really wasn't the way I meant for that to sound".
rex's comments says kerry's gone.if he's staying you say he's staying.if he wants out or rex doesn't want him than you say nothing.hope we get a 3rd for him at least
Or unless we can get a good deal, I think hes locked up here for a bit. I like Strickland, but way too much time on the injury list. We need a good healthy CB. If we can get a stud pass-rusher up front, along with Jenkins back, he doesnt have to be a #1 guy, just a solid CB who can play every week.
we need to rebuild our secondary. If we lose some of these guys, it's not so bad. A safety and a corner in the draft would start us new in the secondary (except for revis of course).
the best improvement the jets make to the secondary in 2010 will not be at CB or safety......it will be the pass rush. jil
Sheppard and Strickland are easily replaceable. Shouldn't be hard to upgrade from them even with the uncapped restrictions. I want us to move Rhodes and I trust that Rex will be able to find a replacement in the draft. Louis Delmas was taken early in the 2nd and had a really good year. With the number of good safeties available in the late 1st/2nd, Rex should be able to find his guy.
Why do I get the sinking feeling that Strickland is going to end up in New England and healthy every week?
Lowery needs to stay and so should Strickland. If Strickland can get over his injury bug he could be a fair #2. Lowery has athleticism and skills. As I have said in multiple threads, if he goes with Revis to his trainer (Will Sullivan) this off season he will be a very good corner in a year or two. I don't know how many of you remember, but there was an article in the summer about Revis and what he did in the off season to train. It was a ridiculous regiment to the point where he was throwing up after running and needed 3 days to recover from pushing himself so hard. If Lowery can handle that kind of regiment, he will assert himself as a #2.
I liked Strickland, but he was never healthy. Even in the games he played, I remembered seeing him come up lame on a few occasions and then playing the rest of the game noticably slower. Rhodes... I stopped seeing him come back next season during the first 2 playoff games. His head was still not totally in the game, and to play that way in the playoffs is unforgivable to a coach like Rex. If they can't get something for him in a trade, the Jets will cut him and sign someone whose head is actually in the game. Sheppard was inevitable. He's never healthy and he is not the player that went to the Pro Bowl anymore.
