The players union has said they would never again agree to a cap if it went away. Whether that makes it fact or not is beyond me.
I wouldn't worry about Asomugha's contract much... Tannenbaum seems to never fail at finding ways to make it work. As for acquiring him, Davis loves speed - so as suggested previously, send Clowney and Coleman along with a lifetime supply of Viagra.
Opposing sides in a legal argument make a lot of strong, resolute declarations in order to gain leverage in the argument. And the NFLPA is struggling to gain any sort of leverage, you can see that in the helpless expressions on D. Smith's face whenever he is interviewed on the matter of a new CBA.
I think a new CBA won't be negotiated until at least summer of 2011, and probably not even then (I expect not to see "real" football until at least October 2011. I think there will be a lockout.) I also believe that when a new CBA is finally signed by both sides that there will be no cap included in it. The union is dead set on not accepting one if it ever expires. And I can see enough mid to small market teams say "Okay, screw it. We'll take the zero-minimum expenditure option." Yup. I agree with you. The only thing that helps is that his salary is prohibitive, and with such a deep draft it could work out as a draft-day deal and the Jets might be able to skate by giving slightly less. However, if Davis called today and said "Gimme your 1st and 2nd and I'll have Aso on the next flight to Newark" I'd have the paperwork filled out and faxed before I hung up the phone.
I don't agree that there will be a lockout. The NFL holds too many trump cards in the game. I posted this article a couple of weeks ago, but it bears repeating: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/wm-david-cornwell-sr/there-will-not-be-a-locko_b_463803.html
I can't see how your "good feelings about the future" where dashed by reading this. On the contrary, i see it as a positive that our FO/CS sees the obvious which is that our secondary was the achilles heel of this team and changes need to be made.
We had the #1 pass D in the league by far and our secondary is our Achilles heel? Injuries to Strickland and Greene were the biggest problems we had in the AFC Championship game IMO. Manning is a robot and had Sheppards number.
I hope not, but I'm not confident. The union seems to be ignoring any and all facts in front of them that scream "Bad Idea" regarding play stoppage. I actually wasn't as clear as I had meant to be also. I wrote lockout when I meant to write lockout/strike. The article you posted was the same way I felt about the situation up until a couple weeks ago. It made no sense for either side to allow a work stoppage. However, over the past few weeks, everything I see is the union being emphatic that there will be a stoppage in 2011. Someone even sent the players a letter the other advising them to start preparing for it. This thing is going to drag out. I'm all but certain of it. ------------------- So now I'm interested to see what the Jets do and what Aso's value becomes in a market where more CBs have just become FAs. Coupled with the draft and the contract we get Asomugha for a reasonable price. That would be awesome.
...and the NHL players will never agree to a cap. Just time warp back a few years during the lockout and ask them. The players will have greater need to cave faster IMO. The owners have already set up a deal to keep getting money if a lockout happens from the networks. Players will quickly realize that if the miss a year of a typically very short career they will never recover the millions lost to them. If they try to dig in too deep it will blow up in thier faces not long after they start missing game checks and the repo man comes for thier bentlys.
There's a big difference between the NHL and NFL. One struggles to survive and one is arguably America's new pastime. The NFLPA knows this and they're willing to risk it all, knowing that ownership knows they have a good thing going. This thing is a stalemate and most people aren't accepting it.
YES. It was our achilles heel because Strickland was always hurt, Lito was either hurt or getting burned,Rhodes was a diva, and Lowery was inconsistant. It's no suprise that we need to upgrade this area to compete in the future.
And yet we finished with the #1 pass defense by far after having faced the top 4 pass offenses 5 times. Even with all those problems you pointed out. Is our secondary perfect, no, but I would hardly consider it our Achilles heel. If I had to point to one thing it would be the lack of production from our passing game. I'm a big Sanchez supporter, but that was clearly our weakest link in '09. I think your statement is absurd.
Thanks. For a minute I thought I was the only one that was of this mindset. I think if a good pass rusher is availalable with the first pick we should go after him. We have not had a good rush end since John Abraham.
Absurd? Did you see the Colt recievers playing catch in the AFC championship game? After Revis and Leonard the rest of our secondary is suspect.
Did you watch Lowery and strickland get injured. Drew coleman is a number 5corner and shouldnt be expected to beat payton manning.
Did you notice we didn't score a point in the 2nd half? Did you notice we couldn't do anything on offense once Shonn Greene went out? Did you notice 2 of our CB's were injured? Did you notice we were playing Peyton Manning IN Indy and had pretty much no pass rush? Did you notice that was one game over the course of 19?
You guys also notice that Peyton Manning is the greatest QB in the NFL?? I really don't think it matters what we did, he just beat us.
