Rex Grossman was great at his best. Somehow, everyone forgot about how good he was for some games that season. They just think of him as an interception machine; in other words, he's thought of as he played in his worst games that season. The point is, you're not great unless you're consistent. Saying Jay Cutler is capable of great games doesn't make him better than a guy like Rex Grossman. When he can be counted on as consistently good, then we can say that. If you ask me who I'd rather have, I'm definitely taking Cutler. But can 2010 Cutler be trusted more than 2006 Grossman?
No, he wasn't. He had a three or four good (not great) games the year Chicago went to the Super Bowl. I have to disagree with you calling him "great".
I didn't watch the pregame show, so I didn't see that. Okay, if it's active QBs drafted in the 1st round, then we have- winners in first playoff start- Flacco, Sanchez, Roethlisberger, Pennington, Vick, McNabb losers in first playoff start- Palmer, Grossman, Rodgers, Ryan, Young, E. Manning, P. Manning, Rivers I have them at 6-8. FOX said 5-9 apparently. My best guess is that FOX thought Pennington started against the Raiders in 2001. Pennington started against the Raiders in 2002. He won his first playoff start.
I'm just going by what I see. I'm not a scout so my opinion doesn't mean anything but Cutler at his best impresses me more than Grossman at his best. Stats aren't everything in football.
He had at least six "good" games, and several "great" ones were included. He twice had games with a QB rating of 137 or higher. 20/27, 289 yards, 4 TDs, no INTs 23/29, 252 yards, 3 TDs, no INTs 29/44, 339 yards, 2 TDs, no INTs
He put up those stats on a 3-13 Detroit Lions team. *and the ones you edited were against the 4-12 Bucs and the 7-9 Niners. I just have a problem with you calling him "great". That's a strong word to use...especially for a guy that threw 23 INTs. Including the playoffs and Super Bowl, Grossman turned the ball over 35 times in 2006. (23 INTS and 12 fumbles) Jay Cutler's turned the ball over 22 times this year. (16 INTs and 6 fumbles)
it's not fair to include the additional games for Grossman but not for cutler regular season grossman had 25 turnovers (20 INTs, 5 lost fumbles) although I don't see what this proves. We all know Grossman had awful games with a lot of turnovers.
Jay Cutler still wins that battle. He turned the ball over less. That also shows us that Grossman turned the ball over ten times in the playoffs. You can't bash Cutler for being inconsistent and then say Grossman was only great sometimes. I'll go ahead and counter those "great" games you previously with absolutely horrible game: He had a game where he turned the ball over 6 times. He had 5 games where he threw 3 or more INTs. I'm fine with you saying he played some good games that year, but don't call him great. That's an insult to quarterbacks that actually are ...great.
I don't understand. I didn't say Grossman was consistent or that he was better than Cutler. I said he was wildly inconsistent, and played some great games and some horrible games... like Cutler. I mentioned that. I didn't say he was a good quarterback. I said he played great games. I didn't call him great. I said he played great in a few games. Again, you seem to be missing the point. My argument isn't that Rex Grossman is a good QB. It's that he played very well in some games in 2006, like Cutler, and that he was very inconsistent, like Cutler. Cutler's 2010 regular season was statistically similar to Grossman's 2006 regular season. Grossman had a few more turnovers (but it's close), and Cutler got sacked a lot more. Cutler also had a higher completion percentage.
refs may have decided the game on that last drive. calls that haven't been penalties suddenly become penalties. seahawk drive crushed by the god hand. garbage reffing. (i have no rooting interest either).
In my opinion, those things are one and the same. When players like Rex Grossman put up big numbers against garbage teams, that shouldn't be considered great. I can't keep going back and forth with you, man. The late edits are almost impossible to keep up with. Jay Cutler is much more talented than Rex Grossman. Anyone that knows half a crap about football knows that. Does he make a lot of dumb throws? Yes...but he takes better care of the football than Grossman and that's sad. Cutler only threw more than 2 INTs in a game once this season. Like I said earlier, Grossman did that 5 times.
Plenty of players have played great games. Few of them were actually great. I'll say the same for Cutler. Maybe next season is where he turns it around.
