Technically, it isn't a promotion because of his title with the Jets Asst. Head Coach.

But you're right, callahan should be free to make up his own mind. If he's that important to the Jets, they should make him OC.

For all those saying it was a dick move maybe the Jets felt that firing a guy that is undergoing treatment for cancer is a dick move.

My guess is Callahan wasn't interested. Let's be honest, who the fuck wants Vince Young as your QB with clearly no say in the matter with Bud Adams having a hard on for the guy.

exactly. I don't see this as an issue and I also think that Callahan had a say in the matter.

"Bill, the Titans want to talk to you, we'd like to keep you, we want to deny their request because we love having you here."

Bill says, "I like going to the playoffs, and I like Rex. Go ahead and deny it."

    Something like that.

I'd like to think that Callahan was unaware and found out by reading this thread on TGG.

    "WTF guys this is bullshit"

its funny that once again for the second time this year that people will come on here and say he probably told them to deny the team looking to hire them... yeah that makes sense. let me stay here as ol coach instead of at least interviewing for an oc job which will put me back on track to a head coach job. yeah im sure thats exactly what happened.

the jets have the right to deny because he isnt going for a head coach position.. i think i heard it on fatcessa earlier this week. the nfl in the past few years has made there 2 levels of coaches. head coach and coach... no oc or anything else so the jets dont have to let any of their coaches interview unless it is for a head coach position.

its kinda a shitty rule and i think there should be another level of oc/dc but hey what the fuck do i know. they did get out of control with the titles though and abused the loophole to get the guys they wanted out of contract.

well, if you did have a clue, which maybe 1/1000000000000000000000000000 times you do, you'd know that Callahan has stated he doesn't want to be a HC again. He likes coaching the OL because that's his specialty.

Same with DT. These guys are position coaches first and foremost. DT is like Rex's brother, Callahan loves coaching an elite OL on an elite team.

They don't want to leave the Jets.

of course they dont want to ever go any further in their careers.

i could believe that callahan doesnt want to be a head coach again he did prove twice that he definitely wasnt cut out for it. i would love to see an article or something in which he actually says that though.

simple google search and the first article i found says "Callahan, according to a source, wouldn't mind becoming an offensive coordinator again because it would enhance his chances of getting another head coaching position."

but hey im interested to see him say he doesnt want to do anything with himself.

Not for nothing, but it's easy to win the cool award when your competing with Gary Myers, Cannizzaro and Rich Cimini.

Also, for those that are calling it a "dick move", Keith Butler has been denied the chance to interview for defensive coordinator spots for years, and when the time came to be resigned by Pittsburgh he did it without question. I'm sure Callahan will be richly rewarded when it comes time to talk turkey, and everyone knows when Schotty leaves, he's next in line.

  14. That's two denials of Jets assistants interviewing for coordinators' jobs. It should be no surprise if other teams deny when the Jets make similar requests.

The one difference in Callahan's case, if I'm not mistaken, is that he is officially the Jets' assistant head coach. That is a title that gives him lateral status with coordinators, and therefore would mean taking the OC job with the Titans would be a lateral move, and not a promotion.

that's "according to a source" when I've read Callahan himself didn't want to become a NFL HC again when he came to the Jets after failing at Nebraska.

fuck that source. It didn't come from Cally's mouth directly. It came from ESPN's bullshit factory.

Butler is going to be the DC after Labeau retires, so its smart for the Steelers to keep him.

Jets fans aren't used to this, so they think its a dick move.

98% chance the source is Callahan or his agent. That's how the news media works; when names get floated as potential head coaches or people interested in the jobs, it's usually the person themselves or someone doing it on their behest.

I doubt Callahan said "I never want to be a head coach again" but even if he did it's bull; he'd take the right head job in a second. For starters his salary would triple.

I think you are right about that. In which case there's no particular reason to think that Callahan would be miffed about this.

    Not much of a story...

I doubt that becoming the OC of a team with train wreck management/ownership issues and no quarterback is clearly a promotion, or a steeping stone to a HC job.
