Well its obvious he's learned his craft well, and judging by the looks of the atmosphere he's creating, he's well on his way to changing Jet culture, I feel for the better. In doing that, the inevitable comparisons to Belichek and Parcells, might never be more obvious and effective, than the development of previous marginal players. Players who didn't quite reach their potential, because of inproper coaching, I've always believed that both Bills got the best of their players, and turned them into productive stars, by nuturing them into "their kinda guys" While we wonder, and ponder where our offense and defensive playmakers may come from, because of this style of coaching, Mangini may get the best out of players like Cotchery, Miller or Rhodes.
Again, let's just hope that his tough training camp ends up being more Parcells than Groh. If he just works them to be bone they will lose their will to succeed and turn on him. I'm not saying that he should re-open Club Ed, I'm just saying that a few well timed days off and free dinners wouldn't hurt anybody.
I think Mangini has the technical and planning areas of his position down to a science. He has been spoken of as a prodigy in this department. We have been so deprived of a technically-involved HC for a while and skepticism is to be expected, but I think his football and personnel decisions, as well as training metyhods, will be sound as a honed craft can be. I think the true question of Mangini is will he be a true leader? The man that can take a team with half a dozen injured starters to the Super Bowl? I'm talking about keeping the players hungry after a loss going into a bye week. It takes a talented man to command the respect of 53 grown men who play a game for a living and are mostly millionaires these days. Will they trust a guy that is not much older than some of their veterans? Can he keep them focused? There are way too many variables, which is why we see so many coaches fail and get canned at sporadic points.
The NFL has changed. It is no longer a game of guys who just love the game being lead by inspirational leaders trying to inspire players to let go and let their talent shine and overwhelm the opposition. Today?s game is all about control. The League, the owners, the coaches all control the game. Mangini seems to fit this new bread perfectly. He is drafting players who he can control and will fit the image he sees for the team. I have no doubt he will be successful in the age of NFL parity and mediocrity. The difference between a great coach and a good coach who really knows? There always comes a time where a great player is going to have to break out of the coach?s mold and control and be the physically brilliant talent that he is to overwhelm an equally controlled and talented opposition. There comes a time when the low INT ratio, the scheme, putting guys in a position to excel doesn't mean a thing. The player reverts to who he is and just lets it go against the control, it isn?t necessarily a smart play in fact it may be a dumb play where all hell breaks lose and instinct rules over control and order, the ball is down the field into coverage and a player makes a play that has nothing to do with being in position or being smart and prepared it has to do with sheer talent and being a football player and those are the plays that ultimately make the difference between a great coach and JAG. I guess having watched every Jet coach since Weeb I'm pretty happy with what we have so far in Mangini. Ultimately whether we win a SB or not will still come down to a great player making a great play that has nothing to do with coaching.
Parcells and Bellichek both made their marks as defensive coordinators who brought an elite top defense to the Giants as defensive coordinators. Mangini turned a top ranked Romeo Crennel defense into a 26th ranked awful defense with the Patriots last year, a fact blurred by Tom Brady carrying the Patriots on his back while Mangini's schemes resutled in a failure. Sure the PAtriots had defensive injuries last year but Mangini did not, as you say, 'Take a team with half a dozen injured starters to a Super Bowl.
So wait...Herm's team was poor because of injuries. And Mangini's defense was poor because of him..and not injuries. Gotcha:wink:
GrohGini? Just the thought of these comparisons of Mangini camp to Al Groh's dazed days.....just plain scary hyperbole. I'm sure we all agree that Mangini is showing us some stuff. I know a building year when I see it but I am starting to like the potential for the future.
1) Mangini is not the Defensive Coordinator, Bob Sutton is. HC responsibilities are different than DC. 2) I was not saying that Mangini was responsible for the Patriots' victory, rather stating a generalized expectation I would have for one with the ability to coach a team to the Super Bowl. You read into things too much.
Dude, 1/2 the Patriots Defense was decimated with injuries, with their main piece, Bruschi, being out part of the season, the 26the ranking DOES NOT reflect that, but towards the end of the season, they pulled it together. You cannot fault Mangini for that defense, it was old and injured, he worked with what he had and still the unit jelled towards the end.
One More Time AGAIN,..if you check the defensive rankings for the final 8 games The Patriots were the #1 ranked in the NFL and still were minus all pro R. Harrison and were a BS call away from a AFC title game with Pittsburgh ,who probably got down on their collective knees and thanked God it was Denver and not the PATS in the title game because NE owns them as we all know. The New York Jets have themselves a young , smart, think outside the box coach...he will be successful..mark my words
To use age as a mock only shows shallow shortcommings on your part. Having said that, Champ is a Giants' fan and Rajenson just hates the fact that he's stuck in Perth Amboy. They both are not JETS fans.
Why is it rajensen completely ignores the fact that the Patriots defense was one of the best in the league once they got some of their players back (Bruschi, a fully healthy Seymour, etc.)? Did he expect the Pats to have a great defense with complete garbage? How annoying.
Because he spent years predicting how the Pats would fall on their faces and repeatedly ate crap for it and now his beloved Herm is gone and a student of the guy the has fed Bob his plates of turd for years has taken over... I think to him this is the coming of the anti-Christ and opening of the Seventh Seal.
