Why do you seem to assume that every time a TE catches a ball, that was Smith's assignment, and Smith blew it?

Celek scored a TD on Bart Scott, with Kyle Wilson deep on the play. Why no bitching about Scott and Wilson?

Wilson played bad but he doesn't play awful on a consistent basis. Did you not see Eric Smith chase Celek for the next 40 yards and never catch him. We don't need a safety who can't catch a TE. Eric Smith was over the top of Bart Scott as well. And I never said every TE catch is Smiths fault just a lot of them. Pool has not been much better in coverage and neither was Jimbo.

Except for the safeties issue (and FTR I an NOT saying Smith is a top shelf safety by any means - I just don't think he's any worse than several other starters on the team), I agree with this post.

I think it works like this. Fans start out the season, going back to pre-season, and have high hopes for the personnel. For example, Burress was going to be at least the equal of Edwards. Cotch was hurt last year, so even a 37 year old Mason was going to be an upgrade. Greene is finally ready to be an every down back, and won't fumble. Hunter will slip in there nicely, replacing an aging Woody. Sanchez will make a leap forward in his third year. Slauson will really show improvement in his second year, and everyone else will play at least as well as last year.

Well, other than some improvement in Slauson, arguably NONE of those things have happened. Mangold got hurt, and Ferguson is not having a Pro Bowl year. Moore was dinged up earlier. Keller is inconsistent. Holmes? Please. And none of the others listed did what I said.

Yet it is all Schotty's fault. Right.

its a team game you cant pin the blame on one guy.... Our team as a whole is mediocre and it shows on the field.

On Celek's touchdown, it looks like we were in man coverage with Cromartie running three yards behind him. Pretty sure. I'd have to check. On his 70+ yard catch and run, David Harris had him, but it looks like he was staying in to spy Vick. It was first down, if I remember right. After Harris passed him off (or was dreadfully faked out of his yock), Celek had 20-yards of WIDE open field with Smith chasing from four yards back wishing genetics didn't make him slow as shit. Whatever it was - someone was out of place.

Absolutely. There is no question about that - if Michael Vick, of all QBs, can figure this scheme out on the spot times and again, this Defense will not stop Tom Brady come playoff. Rex and Co. screwed up royally on the game planning this week - that's for sure. That aside, I would like to point out that this defense always had trouble against shifty guys - like Raiders this season for instance. What do you think Jets could have done differently? (I am asking this because I am really curious. Nothing else.)

Again, I do not say that Smith is an excellent safety. His biggest lacking is speed. But I think with good reason it is fair of me to object that too many posters here think that Smith is totally, or even primarily, at fault for the difficulties the Jets have with opponents' TE's. And some of the wrong thinking on that is not merely a matter of opinion, as too many seem to think that one of two safeties (that being Smith) have consistent responsibility to cover the TE.

What else are we to conclude when some people say Smith was primarily responsible for the loss to the Eagles??? Breaking down the game as it was actually played, AT MOST he shared blame with Harris for the Celek 73 yarder. An awful play for the Jets to be sure, but hardly the difference between winning and losing in a game where the Eagles scored 45 points.

I am sure I am right that too many here place disproportionate blame on Smith. It shows a lazy sort of analysis on their part, and while I am not averse to looking at Ryan's decisions critically, Ryan clearly likes Smith. On this one, I think Ryan is probably more right than the Smith naysayers here.

Schotty and Hunter. Both have been the most inconsistent people on our team throughout the season.

I honestly don't know if Schotty just doesn't pay attention to the game or what, but when your team is down 21 points, YOU DON'T RUN THE FOOTBALL 2/3 downs every single time. Schotty fails to adjust every time we start out behind. Instead of addressing and fixing the problems, he ignores and keeps pushing the same game plan. You don't run out the clock when you're down by that much. Schotty is just stupid as hell. Enough with the 2nd and 10 runs already. I understand if you wanna do play action on 1st and it fails, but it's getting old. 2nd and 10 (or 15 or 20) 95% of the time ends up being a running play. Come on, Schotty, obvious is obvious.

As for Hunter, he is up and down constantly. He'll play an amazing game against a great defensive line and play well, but then the next game he sucks again and plays like crap and gets all kinds of penalties. People keep saying Sanchez is inconsistent, but when you have no time in the pocket, you can't blame him. This whole time it really hasn't been Sanchez that has been that inconsistent its been the oline play, specifically Hunter. Games really are won at the line, and we clearly lost the last one in that category, even on defense.

Also we can't downplay the loss of Leonard. It shouldn't be as bad as last year since Eric Smith has experience running the secondary, but last year, the first game without Leonard we also gave up 45 points. Holmes shares the blame too, but we lost by way more than 14 points so it's not just on him.

This is not correct as a general matter. How so? It depends on how much time is left in the game.

Sure, with 20 minutes or less left, and certainly as the clock ticks down, running the ball takes too much off the clock.

But totally dumping the run if down still in the first half is not smart football.

I should really start running a tally of all the different and usually contradictory comments Schotty Haters make.

Agreed. we were down 21 points in the first quarter like "that." Most people are mad at Shotty for not running the ball enough. The easiest way to get the QB killed is to all together stop running the ball. As it was, they started throwing way more than they wanted to do to the score and what happened? Sanchez had to be helped off the field.

Its just hilarious how many people just talk irrationally when it comes to Shotty. Kill him when he deserves it, and I will agree there are times he does. But please be freakin rational before just blindly bashing him for everything. Someone Sunday actually allowed themselves to type something to the effect of Tones fumble and the pick off his hands were Shotty's fault cause we should have been running.....comedy.

by the end of the game schotty was the least of our worries. but that being said, we still lead the league in three and outs with 59. is that really just the players fault? cause there are teams with a lot worse records than us with less three and outs...

I agree that Shotty is ONE of the teams issues, but not ALL of the teams issues like a lot of people think. I just want people to use logic when listing the reasons why we lose games. No matter what happens, Shotty always seems to be at the top of the list. I am shocked nobody has blamed Shotty for Tone's 15 yard penalty.

"Well, if Shotty drew the play up for Plax, then he, not Tone would have caught the TD and there wouldnt have been a taunting penalty."

The defense hasnt been gangbusters either but Pettine and Rex get no heat. Just be rational is all I ask.

Really theres a lot of blame to go out this season mainly on the defensive side to me. We've really toned down the blitzing this season forcing Revis/Cromartie and others to have to cover for much longer. Also we've been playing way too much zone coverage and considering we have no significant pass rush I don't like the amount of zone coverages that are being called. Start bring some heat so QB's have to throw before they want to and we can start making some plays on defense.

The wild and contradictory flailings of the Schotty Haters are comical to be sure. I tell myself that this does not mean Schotty is above criticism, because he is not. But that gets lost in the way his Haters are so over the top and irrational.

    1. I do agree that Schottenheimer has to share some of the blame, but at the end of the day, players are on the pitch to fuck the things up, not coaches. (Hear that, Holmes. You fucking sucked big time.)

    2. Eric Smith is a liability in coverage - that much I agree. But was he directly responsible for the loss? I cannot tell. Maybe LBs have to cover the TEs in some schemes because of Eric Smith's shortcomings. I really cannot tell until I can see the play design.

    3. With all that's said and done, I cannot say I was surprised with the loss. Maybe I was more surprised at the manner with which this team lost, but I was expecting loss nonetheless. I don't know how this defense can improve much more - many people keep bringing up the Patriots situation as an example of "how this team flops for 45 pts then hangs tight with 21?" but I have to remind you all (for umpteenth time by now) Patriots and Eagles present a whole different level of challenges. In case of Patriots, jamming and being physical at the LoS derails their game plan significantly. (Thus the extensive use of Hernandez and Gronkowski lately. I don't know if anybody can step up to the challenge any given week.) Their passing attack is based on timing, picks and a lot of option routes that require Brady and his receivers to be on the same page. If you rattle Brady - even if that is only tiny bit - by jamming the receivers early in the game, you have a shot.

Does that work against teams like Eagles? NO.

Yeah I honestly wasn't surprised we lost either simply because speed has been giving the defense a lot of trouble this season(D Mcfadden for example) and this Eagles team has far too much of it. But I have to say the way we played Vick was just pathetic. I mean we were mush rushing the whole time acting like he had Chris Johnson speed. I think Rex forgot that this is the new Michael Vick who can actually beat you in the pocket now because it seemed to me like the gameplan was to just contain him in the pocket and not overwhelm him with up the middle blitz's which is what we should have done. If you let ANY QB sit in the pocket for the amount of time Vick had on sunday its gonna be a longgggggg day for the defense.

-Tannywood for being cheap bitches and not allocating more funds to improve the team and for allowing FA's to dictate what we wanted to do and not improving our roster.

-Coaching For not coming up with gameplans that hide or protect our deficiencies.

-The Players for not raising their game to the level that is required of a contending team no matter the situation.
