exactly, if a mopey dude like Eli can make that jump y can't a born leader like Mark will be able to.

Eli has no leadership presence, he's the guy that gets made fun of in a class. Mark is more of an alpha, when he walks into the room, everyone turns and looks.

when it comes to the upper echelon qbs, that type of presence matters a lot.

while seeing drew brees (who was utter crap in san diego in 2003) and other guys who started slow but became decent as their careers progressed is good to look at because it shows that it's not impossible for mark sanchez to turn around. it still doesn't change the fact that everyones situation is different. for every drew brees there's a bunch of guys that showed flashes of being really good at times mixed in with underacheiving and the end result is that they did nothing in their career.

at the end of the day, i hope mark sanchez can turn it around and improve his play in year 4 and i hope the offensive line is sufficent for him or whoever the qb may be as the season progresses.

They all just happen to be quarterbacks that play in the NFL. That's just about it

In his second season Eli was the 18th ranked Qb in the league. Sanchez in three years has not come close to that level.

If that is sarcasm, nicely played.

If not, any QB that has the "deer in the headlights" look, mopes on the sidelines, eats hotdogs on the bench and is called lazy by his teammates, is definately not a leader.

What does the hot dog have to do with anything? It wasn't blatant in their face, they were trying to be concealing.
He didn't mope on the sideline, he didn't cheer on the sideline. They were trying to make Sanchez more even this year. After the Buffalo comeback Sanchez wasn't joking on the sideline, he was on the exercise bike with no emotion.
And the lazy reports have been proven wrong by named detractors and supporters of Sanchez including current players, former players, current coaches, and analysts.

I agree with deer in headlight. Seems to come into form during the BAL game and he couldn't shake it since then.

I think you have to consider the systems in play though. The Giants were using a system that makes QB's look good because it produces a lot of long completions. The Jets haven't used any system consistently enough for Sanchez to optimize his performance in it. The closest they've come was last season when Braylon Edwards was being used in the deep game. Even then the Jets game plans were wildly inconsistent from week to week.

Also, I'm not sure where you get 18th from. Eli was ranked 23rd in 2005, which was his 2nd season. His 3rd season he was ranked 18th and the gap between 17 and him was 2.9 pts, which was the largest gap in the rankings after the drop from 8 to 9.

Sanchez last year was ranked 23rd but the gap between 17 and him was *drumroll please* 2.9 pts. Eli and Sanchez effectively had the same distance between the 17 spot and them in their 3rd season.

Neither of them was a particularly effective QB when you look at them from the standpoint of their 3rd season.

This! I thought the same thing myself. Eli was (IMHO) garbage his first few years. But during the SB run, I gained a lot more respect for him. If somehow dirty pulls a SB win out of his hat, I'll eat my words. In the meantime he's a shitty QB who bangs hot youngins.

Can we stop comparing him to people who win shit, until he, you know... wins shit?

    Ranking isnt that helpful.

They cpuld have identical seasons, one could end up ranked 10th, the other 25th for the same EXACT thing.

Not to mention having different coaches/systems/weapons

I think rankings are more accurate than comparing straight numbers. The straight numbers don't take into account how much the rules have changed to favor the passing game since 2006 when Eli was in his third year. In Sanchez' third year there were 3 5000 yard passers, a 28 year old passing record was broken, and defenders were no longer allowed to hit receivers coming over the middle. The league as a whole threw for nearly 13000 more passing yards and nearly 100 more TD's in 2011 than in 2006

It's a different game now, and so comparing them to there peers seems much more accurate to me.

Eli had to come into the league with the veteran mouthpieces of Shockey, Barber etc in the huddle getting in the way of his progression. Sanchez came into a situation with the best offensive line, running game, special teams and Defense in Football with strong veterans and a good lockeroom. If Eli had that dynamic he could be working on his third SB. As a matter of fact there are about 20 Qb in the league right now that could have won a ring with what Sanchez had. He walked into the perfect situation.

But Sanchez has played pretty well in the playoffs. Granted he was one of the reasons we didn't make it this year ...
