There were a lot of negatives the first preseason game showed that doesnt come from rust. First off i hated the coaching from brian schottemier the apple cleary didnt fall far from the tree. Secondly the drafting of the undersized o-lineman showed throughout the game they were clearly getting overpowered at all times. Third we definitely do not have a franchise RB and last the philosophies of our coaches do not match the personnel of the team. Personally i would have chose a guy like Ron Rivera to be are head coach but thats just me.

Its 1 game. Make your assumptions after the next 3 games.

    1. Did you really expect the Jets to come out looking like a well-oiled machine? Sure the playcalling was conservative, but it's preseason...I don't think the coaches would be opening up the playbook in pointless games.

    2. The OL is abit worrisome. I'm willing to give it time before making judgement, since Mangold and D'Brick are just rookies afterall. OL rookies aren't exactly known to come in right away and make an immediate impact.

    3. We pretty much already knew we didn't have a franchise back, hence the whole runningback by committee deal.

Just relax. It's preseason...almost every team in the league looks abit rusty. Besides, we knew during the offseason not to expect immediate success...Jets are in a rebuilding mode after all.

I doubt you'll see even half of the playbook in pre-season, the Pats never run anything in preseason..you would be a moron to do that..it's a huge advantage going into Tennessee with Shottenheimer because their is no regular season game tape of him calling "O"..Don't you think Mangini and Co have that knowledge?? These guys are smart and we'll see the whole package the first 2 reg season games...when the games count...preseason is the tryouts, half those guys who played in the second half will be in NFL Europe or Arena Ball real soon...no worries

  6. First of the all the first string Ol played pretty well from what I've heard. Secondly Ferguson is 6'6 312 lbs and Nick Mangold is 6'4 300 lbs. Neither are undersized by any means.

Answer me this. What was the Jets' preseason record last year and then how did the season turn out? Did you know the Colts were 0-4 last year and then ripped off 13 straight wins in the regular season? Few things in sports are more meaningless and less revealing than pre season football. We go through the same crap every year after each preseason game. It means absolutely positively nothing unless someone is injured.

As far as the playbook goes Schotty said that we were working towards mastering the short passing game 1st. They did a pretty decent job of it in my book. You play to win the game... lol - but not in preseason. In preseason you play to run things you have been working on in practice at game speed.

Also there was one huge positive that I'd love to get Rajensen's opinion on as I am going to make a direct comparison to the Herm regime:

Twice our first team offense facing their first team defense converted 3rd and short running the ball(both were 3rd and 1). This was something that seemed to never happen under Herm.

Even one better Schotty showed me something with both playcalls. First the fake to the fullback and then pitch to Blaylock - great call. Next an even better call - after setting it up and forcing the defense to respect our options he gave it to the FB. Both converted - hopefully something that will be the rule this year rather than the exception.

I think I also remember a 3rd and 2 play where we passed and converted. A 3rd and 2 pass play? I think Herm might have a heart attack if he heard those words!

Jesus... if we end up having a repeat of last year with posts like this after the first pre-season game, I may have to sneak into the bunker.

    My conclusions:

Chad had an eye opening drive and I was encouraged not only by the way he managed the offense but even the zip on his throws was pretty nice to see.

The RB situation is my biggest concern. If those guys dont learn to block, and fast, we are going to see poor Chad's arm planted in his butt this time. I truely believe that with the right protection the offense will score points with a healthy Chad. But in order to do so those freaking RBs need to step up and stop being such pussies. They need to pick up the blitz or its Testaverdy time again. I believe this is where this season will hang on. They need a running game that not only moves the ball a bit but blocks. If not we are going to be in for a long season and Chad will not last two games.

The 1st defense was also decent for the first half. They have things to work on too though. But I am not as worried as I thought I would be. They even pressured the QB a few times which was nice to see.

Kellen played like I thought he would. He played very well but still made a few rookie mistakes. If thrown in to the starting position right away other teams will have their way with him. He needs to build on performances like that and become the future of the Jets.

Chad needs to stay healthy and the Oline needs to learn how to do their jobs. Ramsey was a waste of time imo. Spurrier let him go for a reason. Nice guy but not a starting NFL QB. At least not now. Chad is a starter. Thier #1 concern should be running and blocking right now, then on defense they need to defend the run a bit better.

Over all performance for a 1st preseason game of the new look jets was as expected if not a bit better. I was not expecting them to come out and dominate with 1st 2nd and 3rd teams. I expected them to get a feel for playing together and learn where they need to concentrate their efforts at camp. Mission accomplished.
