This certainly deserves its own thread, even though the last thing we needed was this depressing news
The salary cap mess the Jets are in im not at all surprised by this. I see Mulligan remaining as well.
Well they wouldn't have saved or lost any cap space if they cut him so I guess it doesn't really matter. What matters is that they still upgrade RT somehow. This guy had better be a backup come week 1 or we're in for another shit show on offense.
On TheJetsBlog, they said if we cut him today there is no dead money with it. Meaning he would be a clean cut and the 2.5 mil would be off the books.
I actually just read that too. On nyjetscap.com it says 0 cap savings if cut. I wonder if that's because he's still on the roster?
I still believe that Tanny is a good GM; but the hubris behind this kind of decision is stunningly disappointing. Too many of these executives simply wont admit that they made a colossal error by signing the guy to a big, undeserved contract.
Aside from an upgrade at RT we still need O line depth, so unless we had to, cutting him made no sense. Hopefully we get Turner back healthy and add to the position, not subtract. Hunter played well in the playoffs when Woody went out.
If this is the case and it really is a clean cut, you have to cut him today. IMO, there is no reason to keep him on the roster at all.
Huh? WTF is this shit? I dont see how this really makes any sense. The only salary that he should be getting paid is from other teams as a thank you for how terrible he is. If this pile of shit starts day 1 next season, then we might as well just skip FA and the draft because there’s no sense in caring.
I believe if Hunter was cut PRIOR to today he had nothing guaranteed. However if he remains a Jet after today, then his entire salary is guaranteed meaning there is a 0% chance of him getting cut.
Hmmm - but what happens if he's cut TODAY, does it create a time paradox, the result of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum and destroy the entire universe?
It means that right now, light years from our galaxy, there are defensive ends rushing past an infinite number of Wayne Hunters and sacking an incalculable number of quarterbacks.
Hey, that's a pretty good post! Yeah, this kind of non-move is that level of ridiculous. I read that info on Jetsblog, too. Hard to figure not doing anything with Hunter as anything other than a refusal to acknowledge how they F'd up with him last off season. I don't necessarily think Hunter needed to be gone. He could be the backup Tackle. But not even trying to redo his contract is hard to explain.
Welp its probably for insurances purposes, although having the #72 ranked OT out of 76 is not exactly insurance. God I hope at 11:59 pm he's cut.
I agree. They can't possibly be thinking he will start again next year, could they? Redo his contract or cut him. Things continue to get stranger and stranger in Jetsland.
It depends on the wording but I think his contract became fully guaranteed today, so unless they cut him @ 11:59 last night were effed
Well the question is can you get someone else who will help the 2012 Jets more than Hunter will for 2.45 million? I'm not sure you can--that's pretty close to the going rate for veteran swing tackles. He's not great but good starting tackles are very expensive.
