Powell has to show something this year, since so far he's shown pretty much nothing. McKnight is entering his third year. Having shown flashes of promise, but not more than that. The Jets have a tough call here as we were talking about on the other thread since in terms of seeing what McKnight might have, he needs carries, but I am skeptical about designating him as Greene's change of pace. Ellis has not shown enough imo for the Jets to feel comfortable about not signing Pouha. Five games is not enough basis to say he's going to succeed. Tevesau for some reason gives me more confidence. Maybin's prospects I can't really comment on. We all know what he lacks, but what we don't know is if he can address that. He has a lot of talent, though, for what he does well. Kyle Wilson does not give me the warm and fuzzies, I am afraid. He may at some point develop into an adequate starter, but imo he will never be as good as Cromartie. I expect you are right about Westerman, but perhaps a bit too skeptical on P Turner who seemed to me to come on at the end of last year.
Again, we're in basic agreement. I understand and can go along with most of the foregoing. Question: If someone else offers Pouha $6-7 million a year, would you match it if it meant the Jets could sign no other FAs?
Agree with both this and Johnny's comments. I don't expect Riley to develop, am just very hopeful he will for a couple of reasons. One, he has great physical tools. If he can put it together, he could become the Jets #1 WR or at least a very good #2. Two, along with Kerley and if the WR they draft develops, it would solve the Jets problems at WR and they can get rid of Holmes. Three, I like Duke. Unfortunately their football team has sucked for most of my life. Things are improving, this would be validation of sorts and give more hope for Duke football if Riley can develop into a solid starter.
This is all speculation, but I think we see a better and serviceable Vlad this year. With a full offseason and a blocking scheme that uses size/strength, I think he can turn into a decent draft pick.
Wilkerson with a full offseason should have a good year this season. I don't think hes going to be a star but if he becomes more consistent he will become a really good player.
Aside from everyones's choice of kerley ... I also like what I saw from Marcus Dixon last year. I'd like to see him get more snaps next year.
Sigh. I hope that doesn't happen. 7 imo is too high, and probably won't happen, but 6 is not a totally unreasonable number, unfortunately. I take it you've seen the analyses on talent in the FA pool. A team that employs a 3-4 and needs to upgrade its run D up the middle might think that would be money well spent. But I am not sure that your premise follows, meaning I don't know that signing Pouha at, say, 6 would mean they can't sign any other FA's. I guess I'd need a better understanding of that part before I answered.
Kerley - I'm really hyped about Kerley. He got better all season long and with a proper training camp he's going to be nasty this year and can run Wildcat. McKnight - A lot of people don't think he's ready, but I feel after one more training camp he will be. He showed us what he can do in the Broncos game. It wasn't spectacular but he made Powel look terrible, and averaged 3.7 a carry. He needs to become the new LT. Wilkerson - He was another young guy that didn't get a training camp last year, and played decently. I think he breaks out this year. Sanchez - Obviously. I thought it would be last year, but we had too many problems to count to fully blame him. He did good with TDs, and and slightly improved, but this year I see him taking major strides. Maybin - Can't wait to see how they utilize him.
If someone offers Pouha that much, you offer Soliai a 4-5 year deal spreading it out in as favorable a manner as possible. The fact is Pouha is fricken (33), so offering him a long term contract would be retarded, as is overpaying the guy.
I don't know that signing Pouha at $6 million would preclude their signing any other FAs, was just wondering if you'd do it if you knew ahead of time that would be the only FA addition to the team.
I basically agree with that. I still think it would hurt to lose Pouha. The thing about signing Soliai to that long of a contract is that it should be structured so that if Ellis emerged that the Jets cut trade or release Soliai without taking a big cap hit.
Under those assumptions, probably not. The main reason is I see the Jets having too many other holes to fill other than just using the draft. While relying on K Ellis is not really an option, there are others if Pouha doesn't come back. I just don't think they are as good as getting him back at a resaonable price.
Thanks. We agree on that. I just hope they are able to re-sign him at a price less than $5 million per season. If the $7.5 million relief they got from Brick is all, then they won't be able to re-sign Pouha, because it will probably take around $5 million to sign the rookies.
I think Kenrick Ellis, I dont really understand why he was as limited as he was. He wasnt awful when he was on the field. I have almost no doubt that Wilkerson is going to be ALOT better next year
