Given our cap situation and our current needs I think this is the right move. If he happens to have a monster season we will have to pay for it....

I like it. We get him for pretty much a one-year prove-you-can-do-it type deal with that tender. If he comes through we sign him to a nice deal. If not then he walks and he becomes dead to me. Win-win in my book

Guess we'd have to take the first rounder if anyone offered it. Maybin out Upshaw/Ingram/whoever else in, too good to be true.

What's the money for an original round tender?

From what I have read, first round tender for 2012 is $2.7mil.

I think this is the right call. You can't give a long term deal to a guy who can't play the run, and who's had one good year in his career.

If he has a phenomenal season and we have to pay through the nose to keep him next year, so be it.

The Patriots are interested and are willing to offer a second first round pick if the Jets choose to match.

Its what I found, can't be bothered to find a link.

On about 20 different sites discussing Mike Wallace getting the first round tender, I'll get some links in a minute.

Here's a couple, I believe the info about $2.7mil is originating from Football Outsiders so I'm not sure about it's accuracy.

1st and 3rd round tender was eliminated with the new CBA. I can't be bothered to find a link either.

Maybin's is 'original round' though, does that make a difference?

This is the smart move. If he proves he can do it again, then you give him a long term deal. If he can't you're only out a few million. If a team offers him up a long term deal then you consider taking the draft pick and considering the depth of this draft you may be able to fill some holes.

Possibly, it's been a while since I looked at the old CBA and I haven't taken more than a cursory glance at the new one so I'm probably the wrong one to ask right now. I've been meaning to d/l it and start reading it while I'm taking my daily dump.

    1) considering the 1st and 3rd rd tender doesn't exist anymore I think you're wrong.

    2) I think there's a difference between the "original rd" tag (which we'll use) and the "1st rd tag" even though in MAybin's case they coincide. (could be wrong though).

I dont see how they'd let you pay less for an original round tender that was a first rounder. Logic says it should be more if anything, therefore I'm guessing it reverts to 1st.

It was a new Maybin tender article so they probably just copypasted the old info like we slobs probably would have.

That was my guess, but usually when I speculate like that it ends up being wrong, so I'll let you speculate instead.
