The other Landry thread was getting too long plus I thought this deserved a thread of its own for people who say Landry can't cover worth a shit.

In 2008, Landry was rated first in the NFL in pass defense by Pro Football Focus.

The following year he was ranked 38th.

I think, if anything, this shows how good Landry can be in coverage. It also shows how inconsistent he can be though.

An inconsisent safey in coverage is much better than Smith who couldn't cover Albert Haynesworth running a deep fade route.

The reason people arent sold on Landry yet is mostly because of injuries, if he can stay healthy all season he could be a pro bowler for the Jets. As long as he has decent speed, I dont see him getting burned downfield too often because of our CBs.

Apparently Landry took over the FS spot in Gregg Williams' D mid-2007 after Sean Taylor's death. How'd he fare in coverage that year? Williams is a Buddy Ryan disciple, similar defensive philosophy.

He was named to the NFL All-Rookie team, for whatever that's worth.

Plus its a bonus that he is on a one year contract.... players usually show the most when they are playing for a contract, hope he lives up to past potential and hype

All these FA's just need to stay on the field this year. If they can, we steal this years FA pool!

    1) That was 4 years ago.
    2) PFF has a lot of good information but their rankings are pretty flaky.
    3) He was not ranked first in pass defense by PFF in 2008, they ranked him 4th.
    4) He was worse than Eric Smith in opposing QB rating when thrown at the last two years. He also worse than Eric Smith in completion percentage when thrown at in 2011, and only slightly better in that category in 2010. Granted that was in a completely different defense.

I do think Landry is better in coverage than Smith, but that isn't saying much. He's also much faster to recover when he is beat. Generally, he's a better all around player than Smith and an upgrade but he probably won't stay healthy and he's definitely not the answer to our coverage issues at the safety position.

For better or worse, Landry is here for this year. Let's hope that he remains on the field. We don't know if the Jets can sign Atowbe or R. Smith. If they do or don't, the safety position, while being a slight upgrade, will need addressing in the draft. If by chance, Barron falls into the second round, perhaps they can do what it takes to get him.

Landry plays SS as does Barron. The Jets now need a FS. Cro has hinted he's open to the transition. People knock Cro for his tackling, but he isn't half the pussy Kerry Rhodes is/was and is far better in coverage. I can see Cro lining up as #2 CB on running downs, with Smith and Landry at S, then switching to FS on passing downs with Wilson covering #2's.

Amazing that Landry was that high missing 7 games. No wonder everybody talks about what a beast he was to start 2010.

steroids boys and girls... lots and lots of steroids. hopefully he doesnt get pulled over on the jersey turnpike with a box of rhinoceros growth hormone....

as someone mentioned earlier, you cant look at 2007 and 2008, first they are 4 years ago and they are before he missed significant portions of 2 seasons with achilles injuries.
