How about this: I've been told that if Quinton Coples was gone by #Jets' pick, they would have selected Stanford OL David DeCastro. #nyj

#Jets were in love with Alabama safety Mark Barron. If he slipped past No. 10, #NYJ would have aggressively pursued trade to move up. #nyj

I've been told the #Jets were, indeed, looking to trade down last night. (Quinton Coples was highest rated player left on their board) #nyj

I've been told #Jets haven't targeted particular position for their 2nd rd pick. They won't reach for need. OL, WR, Front Seven all in play

I was told that #Jets had a late first-round grade on South Carolina's Melvin Ingram. They couldn't justify selecting him at No. 16. #nyj

I am happy with the pick. Good to know that Jets had a plan and stuck by it.

Yeah I'm just really glad they sat at 16 and let value come to them for a change. Put's a completely different complexion on day 2 as they'd have had to trade 2nd, 3rd, etc to get up high.

Wow. SD must be fools then. Yet they have a pretty good track record drafting defensive players (Junior Seau, Shawne Merriman, etc.).

Ingram was a classic hype job. Excellent player at the collegiate level who is probably going to struggle in the NFL some because NFL guards are better than NCAA tackles as a group.

His best position may be right in the middle of a 4-3 defense at MLB. He's got a great motor and he's big enough to be dominant there. He had no natural fit in a 3-4. No position you could stick him in and say: that's where he's going to shine. The closest was at LILB and even that was a bit of a stretch.

That is long ago and is totally irrelevant to the team today.

If Coples and Ingram are both so risky, it seems DeCastro or Reiff should have been the pick.

Those players you mentioned were drafted by a defensive guy that is no longer there. SD has been horrid in the draft on defense lately.

And Larry English, Corey Liuget, Antoine Cason....the list goes on :drunk:

I'm actually happy to hear that we had a late first round grade on Ingram; I thought that our pick should have been his ceiling, and that was even only because he had more value to us than most other teams due to Rex's ability to scheme.

Rex spent a ton of time with both Ingram and Coples. Judging by the press conference, he was just floored by Coples' skillset. If Rex was in love with him, I'll buy into it. I have my reservations as well and would have loved DeCastro, but I can absolutely see the upside to this pick and why he was chosen over the guys you identified.

    From Cimini:

"At 18, the Chargers were looking to move up. The Jets could've dropped two spots and would've been guaranteed to get Coples or South Carolina OLB Melvin Ingram or Syracuse DE/OLB Chandler Jones, but they didn't want to risk it. Ingram ended up going to the Chargers at 18, Jones went to the Patriots (in a trade-up) at 21."

If this is true, we may have been able to work SD for additional picks and still gotten Coples at 18. It's not unreasonable to think SD was trying to trade up to 16 to take Ingram, fearing the Jets would take him.

The bolded tweet is probably going to piss a lot of people off, but it's good news to me.

They have been doing that for a few years now. Hopefully it's there new way of doing things.

The Jets wanted Coples. That's all you can get out of that declined trade. The only guy they couldn't guarantee getting in a trade-down was the guy they took.

I think Rex developed a massive man-crush on Coples after working him out. His track record in working with guys like that (Shaun Ellis had a real revival under Rex and Trevor Pryce was a star) is pretty good.

Point taken. I hope Ingram is a bust. We'll see.

The Jets thought they had great value in Coples and didn't want to risk doing it. I can't really fault them for that. If they had Ingram graded late first, who knows what they had Jones graded at but hopefully that was late first at best.

Yeah, if they have no particular position on the target screen then the odds on a trade-up are much lower.

Well the last couple of seasons the bang for their buck in trading up was much lower because the 1st was worth so little. It was nice to see them sit on 1000 pts of trade value through 15 other picks when everybody else around them was losing their head. None of the trade-ups yesterday were good except for the Eagles in my opinion. I think the Cowboys broke even.

The Jets wanted Coples so much they rejected the chance to get DeCastro and a 4th round pick for him. No way the Bengals were taking DeCastro with Kirkpatrick still on the board.

Rex was probably sick of getting fucked with DeVito in the game without being able to put his pass rush d-line sub-package in. Coples is a 3 down 3-4 DE.
