Love some of the things the two fans in this article talked about. They are dead on about the way things are headed. And i also find it intresting that they hold these phone confrences for PSL holders and no one else.Do only the Jets do this??Or do 31 other teams in the league need to call there PSL holders to bs for an hour?
Other than the PSL part, which as a season ticket holder I agree is pure bullshit, I think this is a pretty lopsided and biased article. I'm not passing my opinion off as fact, but here's why I would turn the page on this article and not think twice: My mindset is that you have to completely rebuild to win unless you are the Packers who stepped in shit with Aaron Rodgers. You can't completely rebuild with one player tying up tons of money. You NEED money and picks to rebuild. The more you have of both, the better off you are. By the time we are good again, Revis will be on the decline (which I believe will come early after the ACL injury). I am in the camp that believes trading Revis is the absolute right move. Revis is also one of my favorite Jets of all time. So it's not like I've held something against him and now I'm jumping at the chance to get him out. As a PSL owner and someone who has had season tickets in the family since the 60s, like Jon Miller up there, I would MUCH MUCH rather rebuild the RIGHT way and reap the benefits later on than meddle in mediocrity and constantly run the risk of becoming a circus. To me, a circus is rebuilding on the fly, not making the playoffs or getting booted in the WC round, then not having the picks to support an actual rebuilding plan. I'll liken it to the Knicks... I've also been fortunate enough to be part of a season ticket plan there for about 10 games a year since 93. I've lived through two finals appearances followed by 5-7 of the worst years you could ever imagine for a basketball team. The Knicks were a laughing stock as they tried to trade for big names and handed out huge contracts. It wasn't til Donnie Walsh came in and cleared house that they became a legit team. So yea, fuck PSAs, but I don't think it's fair to paint the Jets fanbase one color the way this article did.
There's a reason why fans sit on their asses and watch the game while the professionals get paid lots of money to do theirs. If the average fan ran the team the Jets would just be buying all of the high priced players with no regard for the draft or developing young players.
This is why it's always been said, you can't rebuild in New York. The fans are just too fickle. The media is too hungry for that lede.
I just like the one point one of the fans made in the article when he said trading Revis would be setting the franchise back and things like that. "You dont trade your best player if your trying to move in the right direction" something to that effect witch is true because trading Revis isnt gonna get us a franchise QB so hes got a point to a degree
The NFL salary cap makes it possible to rebuild in NY. This season the Jets are going to be the product of past decisions that went sour. They don't have the cap space to do much else. They're probably not going to sign many free agents other than the UDFA's. They're probably not going to keep rolling the cap problems into the future. They're going to deal with what is in front of them right now and they'll be sorting through it and chucking stuff over their shoulder to the trash all season. That's the recipe for getting better. It's the formula for having a better tomorrow to build upon. The angst among the fans and the media churn is going to be there all season. Seats are expensive in MetLife. Some of the media is going to spin negative to differentiate themselves. That's a reality we're all going to have to deal with, including the Jets. It just is what it is. For really disgruntled season ticket holders the answer may well be to put their PSL's on the market at a big discount. The agreement to buy a PSL stated plainly that it was the right to buy a ticket and that no profit was anticipated nor should be expected by the purchaser. A class action suit would fail miserably. Again, that's just what it is.
You DO trade your best player when you're best player is going to strap you financially and be past his prime when you're finally ready to compete. Sometimes the right move isn't always the fan favorite move.
Usually the best move isn't the popular move. Fans like players, especially great ones. Father Time hates all players pretty equally though.
I get it but what are we getting in return thats apparently gonna fix the roster?Everyone wants to trade him but no one has any comments on what happens after that
Because there is no answer. You don't know who is going to be available when you draft with whatever picks you get back. You don't know if they will pan out. All I know is I'd rather take the multiple chances I'll receive by trading Revis than working around the gigantic problem he causes by staying here. And again, he's one of my favorite all-time Jets.
Just having his cap hit gone goes a long way towards fixing the roster. The Jets can't have as much money tied up at CB as they do at the moment. They're probably spending 50% more than they should be there. That's money that they can't spend elsewhere, probably three good players at positions of greater impact. The Jets need to get everything they can out of Revis as they let him go but one of the things is going to happen no matter what: they'll begin to correct the cockeyed cap situation that Tanny and Rex have created.
Lets say this happens i hate using what ifs but say we trade Revis n Cromartie gets injured. Then we are left with Wilson and Trufant and not much depth at the posistion. I still feel trading Cromartie for a second would be a better idea, Trading Revis wont open up cap space either not anytime soon. If there was a franchise RB or QB in this years draft id feel alot better about trading him. Without Revis i dont think we get to those 2 championship games knocking on the door of the Superbowl
If Cro gets injured THIS YEAR then honestly, take the season off and heal up Cro. We aren't competing any time soon and hopefully, we'll be playing for a top 5 pick next year if we rebuild correctly. It's the GMs job to find young talent to develop, and I'd have to assume if Revis gets traded, especially knowing Rex, we will find some young CBs to work on and develop to get them where they need to be in order to be on the field for a contending team. That's another reason why I don't care about the RBs or QBs in THIS YEAR'S draft. To me, this year is about depth, and maybe a starter. Next year is where we need to hit some homeruns. Not to mention, if you stockpile enough picks you can put together a pretty nice trade.
It's funny how they quote a fan in the article as if he has any merit whatsoever. If Izzy can solve our cap and retain Revis without substantially hurting the team in the long run, I will be very impressed.
I think that it's for the better to trade Revis and get something for him now instead of nothing later, but o disagree with the.fans that want to get rid of Revis and Rex next year if we have another bad hear. We could live without Revis. We saw it last year when he went down. I don't think that we can put anything worth watching out there of Revis is traded and Rex is fired next year. Rex does something special with this defense, missing key positions and filling them with bad players and still being top 10 is very impressive. If we lose Revis and Rex that makes our defense lose its two most important key roles IMO. Its hard to really explain what I'm trying to say, but I think ya could figure out what I mean.
Last year like when we went deep onto the playoffs right? lol If we can't afford Revis that's one thing, But the Fans on this board who think trading your best player since Martin will make this team any better is clueless about football. Like I have said over and over and never seem to get an answer, Name the time we traded away our best player and won or even came close to winning a championship? Answer, Never. Woody is an idiot, Revis would sell enough Jersey's and season tickets to offset his salary. Our problem is at QB's and there are no QB's available in the next two drafts. The next few years should be about building up our Offensive and Defensive lines. With Revis gone , half the fan base is going with him. Just watch.
You also have to consider the investment being made by the fans as a contributing problem. No one wants to shell out all of the $, and all of the headache of going to the stadium just to watch a losing team. So the pressure to win now, or at least be respectable, is immense. That, in turn, leads the team to sign the washed up FA's who might give us a year or two of mediocre play and keep us relevant, but it not a successful strategy for building a championship team.
The people quoted are SOJF in their prime. If they can handle two years back in the 90s winning a combined three games, they can handle this. Our offense was one of the worst in the NFL and we still won 6 games (partly due to a soft-ish schedule). A class action suit would be laughed out of court. Nobody put a gun to their head and forced them to buy tickets. The Panthers had 3 seasons without making the playoffs, they have PSLs, yet nobody is thinking about suing them. I personally don't see the point in them, you can buy them off of stubhub/craigslist (single tickets) for a LOT cheaper.
The Jets have signed a bunch of mid-range free agents over the last decade to fill holes left by the constant trading up in the draft. As you say they've used that as a mechanism to remain competitive when draft issues would likely have submerged them. The pattern is pretty clear at this point. The Jets sign free agents to bolster a new coach as he comes in the door. They did this with: Herm Edwards (Damien Robinson, Josh Evans, Sam Cowart, Donnie Abraham, Aaron Beasley, Pete Kendall, Eric Barton, Ty Law) Eric Mangini (Anthony Clement, Kimo Von Oelhoffen, Andre Dyson, Kenyon Coleman, David Bartlett, Abram Elam, Calvin Pace, Alan Faneca, Tony Richardson, Damien Woody) Rex Ryan (Bart Scott, Jim Leonhard, Marques Douglas, LaDainian Tomlinson, Brodney Pool, Plaxico Burress, Anthony Mason, LaRon Landry, Yeremiah Bell) Then the talent ages out or becomes too expensive and the roster is weighed down, both by the mediocre drafting and also by the people brought in to compensate for the lack of success in the draft. The Jets have a chance now to break from that pattern with a new front office coming in. They can go the young and cheap route for a couple of years and be pleasantly surprised when they find a Victor Cruz instead of further dismayed when a Plaxico Burress exacerbates the existing problem.
One of the few perks of having a PSL... we get to listen in on these calls which is about 85% of BS from the front office... Every once in a while Rex gives a bit of info that is actually useful. The best parts are when the NY'ers are NY'ers and just let the question come right out no holds barred
