You need to brush up on your Pats history, Brad. From wikipedia on Vince Wilfork:

Wilfork's contract expired after the 2009 season. He stated that he was looking for a long-term deal and threatened with a holdout should the Patriots instead place a franchise tag on him. In an interview with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel he also acknowledged it would be "a dream come true" to play for either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the Miami Dolphins.[15] On February 22, Wilfork was assigned the non-exclusive version of the franchise tag by the Patriots, who expressed their desire to reach a long-term contract with Wilfork.[16] On March 5, the first day of free agency, the Patriots re-signed Wilfork to a five-year, $40 million contract with $25 million in guaranteed money.[17]

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vince_Wilfork

So, after threatening a holdout, and expressing an interest in playing for Miami or Tampa Bay, the Pats tagged him non-exclusive, and signed him to a five year deal with more htan half guaranteed. He is now 31 and entering the fourth year of that deal.

Sounds like they did not trade him after he threatened a holdout, but instead signed him to a long term deal.

So what lesson do YOU learn from Pats history?

Hahaha. Nice try. You down play the whole "sources" thing when it doesn't go your way (highest paid Def player), then in the same thread post an article backed by "unnamed sources". that's rich. :breakdance:

The guy with 24 tattooed on his ass cheeks has the nerve to call me a troll.

And being gay enough to brag about using the ignore feature is priceless.

    BB in one sentence.

The brat CB can get the Jets to the playoffs, if we get rid of a guy that actually touches the ball 30-40 times a game and start over.

    Nice logic.

Honestly when Revis was hurt this year, we still had a top 10 pass defense. We could lose Revis and still have a good enough pass d to be a competitive team.

Once again Brad this is a ridiculous comment.

    1) who says Revis isn't a key piece of the puzzle? I would call him a key piece and a major reason the Jets got within 2 quarters of the SB TWICE.. in '09 and '10. He was easily those team's best player and the key cog on that defense.

    2) The Patriots DO in fact give huge contracts out besides their HOF QB

    3) You are comparing apples to oranges

The Jets don't have a HOF QB. Should they just not give out any large contracts until they get one? Lets deal with that problem if/when we ever face it. the Patriots HAD/HAVE a HOF QB from which to make those decisions from. No crap they'd give Brady a contract over anyone else, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't pay those players if they didn't have Brady. Switch scenarios and yes I fully believe they'd pay Revis right now.

Hell, they might pay him anyway in 2014 when Revis becomes a FA after our Jets completely botch the whole situation.

Revis being missing was not the only variable comparing the 11 and 12 Jet pass D's. Obviously. Before any further statements need be made, people who put forward this nonsense should themselves list all the changes, and say how they do or do not affect the analysis. Like Landry and Bell replacing Leonhard and Pool, with E Smith not starting, for example.

Or how about last year the Jets were 2-0 in the games Revis started, and 4-10 in the rest?

    Learn the game, Revis haters.

Our pass defense was so good because our run defense couldn't stop a nose bleed.

Bingo. That being said, if we had LBs who could reliably plug holes, I think the secondary would have still been good, just not as good.

People keep saying this but it doesn't explain why the Jets had the 2nd best completion percentage against and 7th best opposing QB rating against - both of which are efficiency metrics. Teams were not very successful (relatively speaking) when they attempted to pass against us.

And those teams lost two AFC championship games with him on the field and doing the thing he does best, covering the other guy's #1 WR.

If you think that having a CB as your best most highly-paid player is doable I'll just direct your attention back to Peyton Manning destroying the Jet's pass defense in the '09 game as Revis could not cover even his own man all that well with 4 and 5 receivers in the pattern on every play. I'll also direct your attention to one Rashard Mendenhall who ate the Jets alive in the 1st half against the Steelers in '10 putting them in a huge hole they couldn't quite climb out of. I'll point you to the key play at the end of the game when Ben Roethlisberger scrambled around for 6 seconds and found an outlet for a 1st down to clinch the win.

Revis was on the field in both cases doing exactly what he does best and what the Jets discovered was that was not enough. Their response was to go draft and acquire more CB's the first time, which didn't resolve the issue either year.

It's really simple, a shadow who covers one guy can't be a key piece in the puzzle even if he basically eliminates that one guy. How many teams rely on one guy other than the QB to get things done on offense and are helpless if you remove that one guy from the equation? The answer is none.

The Patriots give out big contracts at LT (like everybody else) and to their NT. Vince Wilfork is the best NT in the business. His contract is about 5th in overall value at $40M. There is a DT making 50% more than him in Detroit. There's another DT making 37.5% more in Tampa. Two guys are making 20% more than him in other places. His yearly average ranks 7th among DT's in the NFL.

The Patriots didn't hand him the best contract for being the best NT. They gave him a market value contract that was well below the top contracts in the business.

It's not apples and oranges. It's grapes and grapefruits. If you think any player anywhere else on the field shoiuld be compensated like a star QB then I don't really know how to respond to that. It's a nonsensical proposition given the impact that QB has on wins vs other positions It's nonsensical based on how the NFL actually values QB's.

The reason the Jets had those numbers is standing on the sidelines, not on the field.

Look at Rex Ryan's defenses since he took over as DC in Baltimore, a role that he effectively plays with the Jets also, and you see very efficient pass defenses. His pass defenses have been top 12 every year that he's coached at DC and they've been top 7 or better since 2008.

The reason Rex's pass defenses have spiked in NY is not Darrelle Revis, although he was a huge factor in 2009. The reason that Rex's pass defenses have spiked in NY is because he has had more control of the schemes and personnel here than he did in Baltimore. That's why the Jets pass defense was so strong last year in the absence of Darrelle Revis. Rex has put together a package of people that complement his schemes to produce the best results possible.

If Revis leaves the Jets will still be a top 12 pass defense next year. They may even be a top 5 pass defense again. That's because the guy who understands how to defend against the modern passing game best at this point is standing on the sidelines for them.

if Rex leaves I think the Jets pass defense collapses even if Revis stays. The Jets had the 24th ranked pass defense in 2008 with Revis on the field. Mangini and Sutton just weren't very good at defending against the pass.

You have to wonder whether Brad even believes this stuff. According to this link, in the first year of Wilfork's contract he was the 11th higest paid player in the league. The only defensive tackle paid more that year was Albert Haynesworth, and of course that contract is considered one of the worst (for the team) free agent deals ever. But more to Brad's "point" about the Pats, at 11th highest paid Wilfork was only paid less than the following Qb's - Favre, Rivers, the two Mannings, and Stafford (that was his first year, with him being the #1 pick overall before the new contract came into effect).

    http://voices.yahoo.com/highest-paid-nfl-players-2010-season-6790364.html

In any event, while in hindsight we would all agree Wilfork was better than Haynesworth, that was not commonly agreed to at the time. Haynesworth was also an unrestricted free agent, and the Pats put the non-exclusive tag on Wilfork.

Now where Wilfork's contract figures now is of course a different question, because the Pats and him agreed to a five year deal. But at the time the Pats agreed to that contract, Wilfork was the second highest defensive tackle after Haynesworth, and teh 11th overall highest paid in the league. I don't see how those facts support Brad's "point" at all.

I explained this to you already (in either this thread or another). The majority (I believe the number was 10, but I'd have to go back and look again) of games the Jets played last year were over by the fourth quarter (and many by halftime). That's a full quarter, in most games, where the opposing team's offense was running an extremely predictable offense (only passing on third and long to run out the clock or passing the ball every down to get back into the game). This is more than enough time to (over the course of a season) to skew statistics like the ones you provide.

Because in a 3-4 defense, nose tackle is the most important position on the field and cornerback is the second-to-least important position on the field (after free safety).

I'll explain that. The Jets faced a great majority of terrible and/or young QBs in 2012. It skews their statistics

    Fitzpatrick twice
Tannehill once / essentially Moore once
    Henne
    Locker
the shit show worse than ours from Arizona
    Bradford

even Phillip Rivers was playing terrible when he faced our Jets.

Use your eyes. Good QBs played very well against this team and they were fortunate to face some terrible ones especially in the second half of the season. Half way through the year they weren't that strong because they played better QBs who coasted against a Revis-less D.

The statistics look better than they really were... But 56 yards passing for those Terrible Arizona QBs and multiple <150 yard passing games against many of those shitty QBs I listed above are going to skew the numbers. You watched the games - you cannot tell me the Pass D looked that good outside of the games against the terrible QBs I listed!

They really only faced 3 all pro QBs all year. Brady, Roethlisberger and Schaub (all-pro level is debatable) and all 3 beat the Jets. Brady and Roethlisberger torched them and Schaub played well.

Most seasons you are going to face more than 3 all pro QBs in a year.

Haynesworth was considered the better player, albeit not by much, by many people having nothing to do with comparing the 3-4 to the 4-3.

Frankly I don't even know what your point is.

That's because you are intentionally trying to ignore everyone's point, but your own; you've demonstrated that over countless posts in this thread.

But I'll spell it out for others ... if you're going to pay "All-Pro QB Money" to a defensive player, you're better off giving it to the guy who plays the most important position in your defense, not the guy that plays the least important player in your defense. Belichick understands this. You do not.

The problem is not that I am ignoring anything. I have countless times explained why I disagreed with your point.

I do not think the #1 Cb is the LEAST important player on the D.

In any event you have lost track of the discussion on this thread. Brad said the Pats would never give a big contract to someone other than their Qb. Wilfork was the 11th highest paid player in the league the first yera of his contract, so there goes Brad's argument that we should not pay a very big money contract to ANYONE other than the Qb.

But....I thought Nacho was the worst QB in the league?
