Thank goodness. Stability at HC. This is a good start to a prosperous future for the NYJs. If Idzy can keep up the good trades...we will see what his people can do during the next draft. You go Rex
This is a good thing. There really isn't a better head coach out there to manage the Jets at this point. Now the Jets need to give him enough talent that he's not the underdog against the Patriots, Ravens, Steelers and Broncos.
We would have a respectable offense at least. This guy has done nothing to warrant a multi year extension. I repeat "multi year" extension so clowns like you can read.
the clown here is you and let me explain: FREE AGENTS DONT SIGN WITH TEAMS THAT HAVE LAME DUCK COACHES. if you want to build a winner, and you have as much cap space as we do going into the offseason, you need to show that things will be stable. having rex coach with no or a 1 year extension is meaningless, because a player isnt going to sign with an organization that is unsure of its direction. it doesnt make sense for them if they want to be on a potential winner. winners arent formed overnight. they take time. also, we have no offense because we have no talent. MM got more out of less this year than anyone in the league. we started receivers in the one and two that most teams wouldnt put in there 3 and 4 spots. our line had some issues, we had a rookie qb, and one of our backs that was supposed to be a major part of the team, decided taking a nap drunk and high on I-80 with a gun and a fat sack of trees was a good idea. so how do you fill this offense with talent? you make the jets as atrractive a destination as you can. what helps that? extending the contract of the guy who is regarded by most players as someone who they would love to play for. when this team had talent, rex got us to back to back afccg's with a qb who may well end up being nothing more than a 3rd stringer next year somewhere.saying he has done nothing to deserve it is 110% false. he has worked with scraps and kept us competitive EVERY YEAR he has been here (even the 6-10 year we were in the hunt for quite awhile). we are building back up that talent, and to have uncertainty that would drive it away is just bad business.
Yeah I mean because Flacco led a respectable offense this year right? Ray Rice had a career year. He was his usual self. And he was such a good HC without Peyton! I mean him and Curtis Painter led the Colts to such a respectable offense. How many wins did they have again?
he has the best win % in Jets history for any coach that has coached here at least 5 years, he has the most playoff wins in franchise history, most title game apps, led team to 8 wins that most thought would win 3-4. Is one of the best coaches in the game. This is a GREAT day for the Jets if it is a real multi year extension and not just window dressing.
You're the definition of "idiot." Mediocrity? Did you see the abysmal offense Rex has had to endure during his entire tenure with the Jets? He took the team to two conference title games with Mark Sanchez. He was given a pile of trash this year and worked the team up into eight wins, and has turned Wilkerson and Richardson into monsters.
Despite his shortcomings, I'm happy to see Rex staying. There aren't many better coaches out there. Hopefully the GM can bring in some decent talent.
I'm waiting to hear the details, but that would make sense. essentially a 2 yr extension with extra money thrown in for playoff wins..
Haha, what happened to the dude that was talking like everything was falling apart behind the scenes because the deal hadn't been worked out yet? They must be fighting and hate each other ahhhhhh! This is the best news I've heard in a while. Rex deserves an extension, and it gives him 2 full seasons to bring us back to contender status as Idzik brings in the talent. That's certainly fair. I see us contending next year if the right moves are made.
The two year extension I don't htink is what Rex deserved. I would have been satisfied with a one year, since lame duck was not the way to go. Plenty of coaches coach with two years on their contracts and without being seen as in an unstable position. So I have to think Woody liked the idea of two additional years. In fact that aspect of it is worth some attention along with whether the idea itself is appropriate. I read the ESPN article, and this sentence leaped out at me: Johnson said that he decided that Ryan would continue to coach next season before the last few games. Hm. Does this mean that this was Woody's decision and not Idzik's? Even if Idzik agrees with Woody, I still find it troubling that Johnson feels compelled both to decide this kind of thing instead of leaving it to his GM, and then to take the "credit" for it. I think at a bare minimum it leaves people with the impression that someone who knows less about football than your average poster here is making this kind of decision. In other words, Woody does it again.
That's not the point. The point is that Rex has been a mediocre HC and the team's record has been mediocre the last 3 years, and were it not for the Colts gimme game to end the 2009 season, the team would have a mediocre record 4 out of Rex's 5 seasons. So extending him IS like rewarding mediocrity. I'm glad the deal is done, because as several have said this didn't need to drag on and continue a "circus" atmosphere or hinder FAs from wanting to sign here. It also needed to get done, if it was gonna get done, so the Jets could retain Dunbar and any other assistant coaches they want to retain. That said, if Geno is the starter and shows a lot of improvement in 2014, and the Jets are able to add some quality FAs and draft picks and the Jets are mediocre again in 2014, I hope that the "multi-year" part of the deal won't keep Woody from firing Rex. I still think it was a mistake to keep him.
