I don't understand why people are so hung up on depth chart and where players fall in order on that depth chart. Do people not realize we run an essentially spread shotgun offense that features 3-4 receivers on every given play? Go back and watch the games. Too many playmaker isn't a problem unless you throw Randy Moss, T.O. and Keyshawn in the same offense who all want 80 catches.
Spending the 1st on a receiver who will be on his rookie contract while Harvin plays out his next 4 years would not be terrible. Harvin, Decker, Cooper and Kerley gives an excellent group. Pick up OL in the 2nd along with someone like Iupati as a FA and the offense is rounding out pretty nicely. Big ? at QB though. With that kind of receiving corp you want someone who will utilize what is around them.
You would pay more to Alshon Jeffery and Randall Cobb if they wanted more than 4 mil ... they are #2 receivers right now on their teams
ok, say we kept percy using a top 7 pick on a receiver would mean a. cooper will be package player/depth player b. decker would be a 7 million reserve player c. harvin would be a 10 million reserve player d. kerly would be a 4 million reserve player we are tied up so much money on WR's now and we aren't a spread offense where we chuck the ball around..if we had all four players the low amount of balls caught between each player wouldn't match up to the salary payed out to them. plus our QB has trouble getting the ball to one wide out alone. there are many issues now that need to be fixed like a QB, CB, and start retooling the OLINE if we can but for your argument, I'm very curious to know if there is a stat of how many snaps a average team uses 4 WR sets that don't include the tight end or a RB split out
your right teams use 3-4 wrs in shotgun all the time..but most teams don't spend 17 million + a top 10 pick to do that..most teams have 2 high salaried wideouts at the most and role players
his contract was apparently based on that of Andre Roberts from the skins. his stats line up with that of Roberts too, to an extent, so I guess thats the comparison of talent the powers that be are using for the 16 million dollar figure. Cobb might make a bit more, Jeffrey should make more. we got a good price for a good receiver it seems.
i could see jeffrey in the 7-8 range if he resigns with the bears..he could make a lot more on the open market..cobb is going to get more then kerly 5-6 maybe
Drafting a receiver in the first or second is a great idea. Not only would he now not have to been throw into the fire but this also finally gives us a solid core. Say we draft Cooper he can slowly work his way into the starting outside spot opposite Decker and Harvin/Kerley can man the slot/return roles. When Cooper's rookie deal is up and you have to pay him it's okay because Harvin/Decker/ and Kerley's are also up. But before deciding what should we do we should wait and make sure Harvin works out.
Kerley can sit his happy ass on the bench if I've got Amari Cooper, Eric Decker and Percy Harvin available.
As an older fan I've fallen into this trap many times myself when the Jets bring in a huge name with a great history. I pinned my expectations on highlight reals from 2-3-4-5 years ago. From Favre to Ronnie Lott to Chris Johnson. I've learned to temper my enthusiasm and just enjoy what little gas is left in the tank of a former super hero. I used to, but I no longer look to Chris Johnson type signings to blast us off into the next realm. The older I get the more attention I pay to these snot nose rookies coming in from college. I'd love to see our very own Tom Brady, Chris Johnson, Troy Palamalu, Calvin Johnson, just pick one, blossom into a game changing super star right before our eyes wearing nothing but the green and white.
Good point whoever said it, this is based on the Roberts contract. Too bad Roberts is a much better wideout than Kerley. I have no problem with this contract tho. Kerley is a solid guy and a fan favorite, we are swimming in too much money so give the guy a decent salary. Fine by me. Lol whatever dude, you say that and then mention someone we signed last offseason. You'll still be creaming your pants next time we bring in a big vet FA And how is champ even still here? The guy is the biggest a hole troll ever.
Harvin will get hurt in 2 or 3 games and Jets will realize 10 mil for an injury plagued wr isn't worth it cut him draft cooper.....book it
No having four WRs is amazing. it wouldn't be terrible, it would be great. The only problem is the rest of the team suffers because you thought it would sound cool to have the best WR unit in the league dumping tons of resources into a position where three capable players already are.
in theory..yea your right thats awsome..but then 4 million a year wr is wasted when a mid round pick at the salary of under a million can use take up that spot..its just bad cap and roster managment at the end of the day
so wasting a top ten pick on a player who doesnt play full time for 4 years...that would work out great for the fan base...people go nuts when coples snaps were reduced
I've tempered my enthusiasm over the years not just for fancy vets but for top draft picks as well. When we drafted Key we were going to be unstoppable...no one would be able to cover him. We all couldn't wait for the season to start, but then reality set in. And reality is this: No single player, none, will transform the Jets, or any team, from avg to superstars. I know someone will say "What about Brady", but Thomas was one in 22,437 since his was drafted. So I'll continue to temper my extreme enthusiasm, which makes the games and season more fun to watch, and if someday we do catch lightening in a bottle I'll enjoy it even more b/c it will be the last thing I expect.
because decker and harvin play the outside (and inside), and kerly plays the inside.. how many snaps a game do teams use 4 wide outs (not a te or hb split out)..only in obvious passing downs most teams will do this..it just doesnt justify the way to use 17 million on wr's and a high draft choice... when you draft a WR that high, your saying this is going to be the guy the #1..at worst the #2 target..and for sure cooper would be a top 2 target on the jets...but that means over 10 million dollars is being used on low snap package players. now, if harvin does not work out, then i could see cooper being drafted by the jets...but right now Decker, Harvin, Kerly, PLUS Amaro + cumberland at the tight end spots is more then good. if geno cant play with these targets then its safe to say, we need a different QB
