In the right system and with a better offense around him, I'd say he's worth a look for competition. Obviously talented and not far removed from being a top 10 pick
He's played well enough to warrant a 2-3 year deal (limited guarantees beyond the 1st year making him easy to release if he significantly regresses) in my opinion. Not many great FA options. I'd like to see Harris and Davis back with a young ILB to groom, sort of like Demario Davis' situation behind Bart Scott in 2012
If you go for Locker you have to get rid of Geno. So I keep Geno (because there's no trade market for him-at best you get a conditional 6th rounder) and bring in a vet who can start.
Signing Locker and getting rid of Geno would be counterproductive and borderline dangerous given Locker's health issues. I think the point of bringing in Locker would be to compete with Geno, make him work for his job and push him. Getting rid of Geno just hands Locker the job, and he's not good enough to warrant that kind of treatment.
I wouldn't but I think it's a duplication. Two young Qbs who have underachieved and at this point maybe have a future as backup Qbs. I wouldn't go with two guys like this just one. Along with a vet like Shaun Hill who can start and play well.
I think this offseason will be terrible for the Jets's future. Aside from the fact that keeping Idzik would've been the right thing to do, Woody caving in to the media and the fans will, in my opinion, keep first tier GM/HC candidates from coming here. Whoever does end up coming here, they will feel like they are on a very short leash with everything that's been going on, and do all sorts of short term panic moves, to improve the team very quickly, which is not necessarily what's good for the team in the big picture. I see us either bringing in old CBs (Revis, Cromartie, etc) or overpaying for not so old CBs (Maxwell, Williams, etc) to shore up the secondary. I also see us potentially pulling off some bad move for a QB, either trading for Cutler/Bradford or overpaying for Hoyer/Locker/etc, because the new GM/HC will see what taking chances on young QBs did for the old regime. Well, on the bright side, the team will most likely be more competitive next year. But if they go down this road, you can kiss your Superbowl dreams goodbye for a while.
Rather have two hungry guys than a potential Vick in the ranks, just chillin on the bench, not prepared to play. Locker still has something to prove, i think. I really don't know much about Hill, but his credentials are not very impressive either. I think Geno would beat out Hill for the job with ease; it would be a real competition with Locker.
Trading for Bradford would be a great idea. I think he is the best "available" QB out there. Other than that I pretty much agree with you; save I think there are a lot of potential GMs and coaches that would want to come here. We have a few weapons now (thank you Idzik), We have a ton of money to spend (thank you Idzik), and we have a solid draft position (thank you Rex and MM). Problem is I expect the new GM to come in like a Tanny and have a spending spree, which would lead to another "Cap Hell". It was pathetic that Woody caved to the fire Idzik crowd, "we are in the media business" very sad.
I disagree. Hill is underrated. And whenever he's played has done well. I'd bet on Hill winning the job. But the thing with him is can he play well in 16 games. Like Hoyer, maybe not. In that case Geno gets a chance to start sometime during the season. We know so far Geno can't play well for an entire season.
I will have to take your word for it. I have not seem him play much/at all. Hill will be 35 in a couple of weeks.
To figure out what our needs going into FA is just go back and find what the list at this point last year; I bet the list hasn't changed.
I wasn't a regular Rams watcher but I think he was satisfactory. Probably Hoyer is a better option but I'd take Hill. I'd be afraid to name Geno the starter going into the season.
Last year we needed WR's, TE's, OL, QB maybe RB, Safety, CB. This year we need OL, QB, address WR, maybe RB, CB address LB and address Safety.
On Defense, I say go after Houston at LB. He would feast (not like he hasn't already in his career) by playing with our front. If you think about it, the addition of Houston leaves us only a FS and a Cb away from a Defense with practically no flaws. After Houston, I say spend some money on a young OL. Heading into the Draft, we would have a lot of flexibility.
There is no way Geno will be named starter until after camp. We definitely need to address the QB position and have to have a viable competitor/"starter" to battle in camp for the job.
He is going into his third year and he has plenty of starts (around 30). So no more I'm learning and improving. It's time for him to make a move. And play consistent football. If not get another young Qb and pair them with a veteran.
Only thing I will add to this is importance of a "mind" at OC that understands how to manage the position. If you don't have a "true" franchise leader QB on the field you must have a "smart" "mind" at OC that understands how to manage the position/offense. We don't always have to put it on a "weaker" or "lesser" than "true" franchise QB to win out the day. That's where having guys in the backfield is a great thing. That's what killed me most about MM. How can Ivory only have 10 carries or less in a football game? How can powell only see a couple of touches in a game? Where are the easy screen passes to the flats that can net huge gains? Where is the HB screen?
