The Jets have huge depth at CB and after signing three proven starters they are going to be cutting a starter from last season. Milliner was going to be the guy last year and McDougle was going to have a shot at starting on the opposite side, but injuries took both out. Darrin Walls is a depth guy who started last year and even though he struggled mightily at times he could easily be a 4th or 5th CB and hold his own, but on the Jets he is 6th at best and lucky to make the roster if they only keep six. Marcus Williams was raw last year at looked it, but still was the most impressive CB we had, showing flashes at times during his 8 starts. After being an undrafted rookie and thrown into a starting roll, he held his own, well better than expected. On any other team he would already have earned a spot on this years team, but just as with Walls, he may never get another shot with the Jets. With the Jets most likely keeping four safeties, they will only keep six CBs at most. Since Rex really liked what he saw in Williams and kept Walls around for three years (so he knows the defense really well), if either is released I expect Rex to gobble them up. With Milliner being a 1st round pick he is safe, plus McDougle should be safe and given a chance. If the Jets keep only six, who would you keep? 1. Revis 2. Cromartie 3. Skrine 4. Milliner 5. McDougle 6. Williams
I thought Mac signed too many Dbs because I like Walls and Williams and I really think that Milliner could be very good in the future. I kind of questioned signing Cro but after he dissed Sherman the other day and told the truth: that Sherman can't hold Revis' jock strap. I love the guy for saying that. Welcome back, Cro.
I see Williams staying before Walls definitely and McDougle maybe. I'd be happy with Williams and Dee eventually becoming our top two CBs as Revised and Cro are phased out, after some development and shared tips of the trade from them. They're both young and have shown true starting talent. I think we lucked out by having them both when we have Revised and Cro. Heir apparent. I hope we don't lose Williams.
Of course if over crowded in the secondary they could always make a deal. I could see the Jags making a claim for one these guys before Rex. Idzik is familiar with them and Jax would get priority over the Bills for players waived.
Is the Bills picking up Darren Walls really a big win? While he made a good effort last year on a team that was sorely in need of CB help he still has major holes in his game.
I mean it's pretty obvious who's going to make the team. Revis, Cro, Skrine, Milliner, McDougle and then Williams and/or Walls. So I'm not sure how it's a "win" for the Bills. They won't be drooling over Walls anytime soon.
If MacDougale gets cut I'm sure there's a spot for him waiting in Jacksonville. I'd keep Williams over Walls too though. Good chance Milliner starts the season on the PUP list.
Walls has Kyle Wilson syndrome except for the fact that he stays with the receiver better. He can't find the ball, doesn't tackle very well and can't catch to boot. I like him and have pushed for him but ball skills isn't really something that players can get much better at. You either have them or you don't. He's a decent depth player at the 4th or 5th corner spot but nothing more. Your infatuation with bottom of the barrel players is very odd. First a thread about Glennon (most likely a career backup) and Austin Davis (will probably be out of the league within 3 years) and now on a 5th corner on most teams?
We'll keep more than 6. Bowles is a former DB, he likes rotating guys and creating different blitz schemes. Dee probably gets stashed on PUP, so that opens up another spot.
If Milliner starts out on the PUP this isn't an issue until week 6 at the earliest. Another option is to try and get a 7th for Walls in a trade.
Milliner may start the season on the PUP or even the IR list. You can designate 1 player for return on the IR, I believe he has to miss the first 8 weeks of the season. That would reserve Milliner and allow the Jets to keep an additional DB. I think long term (beyond this season) McDougle and Milliner will be on the team.
You guys brought up the IR list, which is a good idea, and would keep six others on the active roster until mid season which would hurt their chances of being picked up, but I still expect who ever in cut and regardless of when, Rex will grab them. Rex loves corners and a corner who not only knows your defense already, but has also started at least 8 games in that defense is a win. I just hate the idea that we give up anything to Rex or the Bills.
When you have great depth problems like this, or even could trade a top guy like Mo and still have the #1 Defense, it should be a great year. Unless you look at the QB spot of course.
Yeah, good point. If they can IR a few of them Rex doesn't have first crack at these guys. The Bills were 9-7. There's a lot of other teams who'd put in a claim before him.
I really hope the Jets dont get rid of Williams. Im aware part of the reason I liked him so much last year was because what I had to compare him against. But he showed talent and with practicing and learning from Revis and Cro I think he could become a great depth piece for the team.
Define "win" bc last I checked our secondary sucked balls last year Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That's correct, Rex can only win with good cornerbacks, he has proven that his defense is ineffective if he has to rely on talent at other positions
