Who do you think will win the starting TE job over the offseason? Amaro seems to be a better pass-catching option, but Cumberland is a better hybrid of both blocking-and pass catching (although both aren't spectacular blockers). Here's what I think will happen in the battle: You?
I'm not a huge fan of the whole "Cumberland is the starting tight end and Amaro is the starting H-back" thing. Hopefully Amaro can develop into beyond a liability as a blocker, I don't really want to telecast to other teams that we're running or passing depending on which is on the field. Also, Gailey's offense used 2 tight end sets less often than any other offense in the league during his stretch with Buffalo, so it's unlikely that we'll see them on the field together too often.
I think Amaro is going to be the starting TE. He looked very promising last season. I think he was a good pick for us. Although that seems to be an unpopular opinion as I've seen many people on this board preach quite the opposite. I think he's gonna be a great player for us, he'll hopefully develop into a consistent offensive weapon.
Who is that an unpopular decision with? Most Jets fans are happy with Amaro, just how little he was allowed to play last year.
They both play a "different" position. Cumby is going to end up in the starting lineup because he's the "Y" (traditional) TE who also blocks. Amaro is more of an H-Back, a receiving threat. Amaro will obviously outproduce Cumby but Cumby is going to be the #1 TE if you look at the starting lineup. Doesn't mean much.
Hopefully Amaro wins the job. Cumberland is at best a #2 TE. Amaro needs to learn how to block better and eliminate the concentration drops.
Amaro will be the starting TE....Cumberlands been on the roster for almost 6 years and hasn't proven to be a num 1 TE.Amaro still has upside Cumberlands just good for depth at this point
Check out the hands of O-Lineman. They're thick, bruised, fingers taped together, thumbs (or what's left of them) double wrapped. A TE would find his hands looking similar if he truly puts his all into blocking pissed off 300 pound defensive lineman. So I can't really blame ANY player who needs their digits to catch seam passes for not sacrificing 'too much'. TEs who chip the d-lineman then go out for a pass are 'pass catching' TEs. TEs who stand in there one/one taking on a blitzing LB or stunting DL the whole play are 'blocking' TEs. Right now we have 4 pass catching TEs. ohh...love the video! good job
great GIF!! Idk who WILL win but I'll say this. Amaro will be given every chance in the world to win.
Dropsies and inconsistency for Cumberland...Amaro has a huge upside, we haven't tapped yet (Amaro has the dropsies too)
I'm not entirely sure where this phantom solid blocking from Cumberland comes from. Granted he's not a wide receiver there getting bowled over every play but it's far from a positive in his game. To me, he's an empty stat playing. Running down the seam in a 3 score game with 5 minutes left and catching a couple 15 yard balls doesn't qualify you as a playmaker in my eyes. I think Amaro will be a good player, and hopefully the easy drops will disappear. The reason it worries me is because it appears as though he's worried to get hit when he has too much time to wait for the pass on sit routes. That and he's so big and long that he doesn't attack the ball when he's sitting open but that's something that can be adjusted. Hes a big ass dude. One can hope the blocking will come so that he's at least not a negative in that aspect. Like I said he's a big dude at 6'6" along with decently long arms and 28 bench press reps. His draft profile says "flashes of nastiness."
