What just amazes me is that one of the main reasons Mac was hired was because supposedly he could evaluate talent and our drafts would be much better that said sorry I don't see it, I see many wasted picks. On a Jet Message board we can all debate and say what we think and be wrong but GMs get paid to get it right. I also laugh when we get all these coaches see Bowels that are learning on the job , are you kidding me ? Yes HC is a big under taking and there are many tasks but use of Personel, Clock management and down and distance among other things should be a given and any good pee wee coach is aware of these things,,,,heck we are all screaming on our couches ,,,Bowels aint it and Mac is losing me fast
He's an Average GM...end of story. Plus he has that noodnik Toilet Bowles advising him to load up on Defense. Notice the trend ? (Till we landed Sam) Over last 3 drafts The first 3 rounds are devoted to defensive studs while any point scoring OL etc players are relegating to the droppings of 4th -7th rnds Mac isn't talking to the wall..Bowles is right there "helping him" with the decision process and has caused us to tumble in wins losses and drafts! Bowles is trying to help HIMSELF look good coaching the best players (can't even do that right) Will anybody pan out?? 40 per cent have been losers and the 60 per cent remaining could or might be good?? How does he compare ? :There are many better and worse..personally I wouldn't mind having John Dorsey from the Browns On a positive note he made the Richardson trade and of course moved up to get SD...Mac should only hope he is going to be remembered for THAt
For sure...the buck stops at Mac, but where's the scrutiny for the Jets scouting staff? There's like a dozen of them fuckers funneling info on players up the chain of command.
Don't forget Jamal Adams falling into his lap too. Could not agree more on O-line. It's funny how their is much more venom towards Bowles than Mac when I feel they are equally responsible. I don't think they are as bad as some make them, but they are equally at fault. Mac has not provided the talent and the Bowles coaching staff hasn't been great at developing non A-Plus talent....and game management is sometimes horrific. With ALL THAT SAID, I am probably on the side of keeping them around for one more year after this year barring a catastrophic season. If at the end of the year the following happens, I feel they have earned one more year. I won't say forget wins and losses because that's looking at it wrong. I want to know HOW they win and lose. Are they competitive in most games and lose because of lack of talent? or bad coaching? Very different Do we go into next season CLEARLY saying that we have our QB of the future for the next decade or do we end the season saying "I THINK we have our QB of the future" Adams, Williams, Maye, Shepard, Williamson, Johnson, and Jenkins and Lee can be counted on as productive starters (with 2-3 being Pro Bowl level players) next year. Robbie Anderson continues to progress and looks like at worst a GREAT #2 WR We have a long term solution at TE on the roster The offensive line produces 3 clear cut starters going into the offseason. Special teams is at least an average unit. If those things happen, which isn't too much to ask, we can go into the offseason with a clear picture on what we need to do to make a playoff run. Fortify the offensive line with 2 upgraded starters Find a pass rusher Upgrade the skill positions with 2 starters (WR and RB) Find a good 2nd corner (hopefully Nickerson or another young corner step us as a #3) Depth Find a dynamic returner While that's a lot to find in an offseason, I don't think it's impossible with the cap space we have, hopefully getting a premium pick from a Bridgwater trade (no less than a 3) and solid drafting.
I would guess that we go into next offseason knowing we are set at wr1 Q and wr2 Robbie and possibly 3 in Pryor. Te between legget and Herndon will be answered, D line and secondary willl be mostly set with maybe the nickel and some d line rotational spots up for grabs. Lb corps will have 2 spots upgradeable in Lee’s spot and the elusive edge rusher. The left side of the o line will need replacing Rb will be set. I think that’s the best case scenario we are looking at with the roster where it stands right now
Yup, and just in general this regime needs to hit on some more picks / find young players that can help out on special teams. Special teams can derail a season. Chargers a few years back were top 5 in offense and defense and still missed the playoffs.
Macc isn't the worst, and I think he has a philosophy/plan and is working towards that. However, he's had a lot of misses/questionable picks. I believe this is due mainly to his BPA philosophy overriding the need to fill certain spots. I know there are many here who completely agree with BPA, but I don't. When you've had gaping holes at certain spots - OL (especially LT), pass rusher, QB, WR/RB - and you don't even try to improve them because you jump on a BPA at a position that's already doing okay, you're holding yourself back. Case in point: Safety was a need last year, but so were these other positions, especially QB. Macc takes TWO Safeties with his first two picks, thus eliminating any chance of filling any of those other historically gaping holes. Had he skipped Adams and taken Mahomes or Watson, or a pass rusher, he could've still had Maye who arguably might be as good or better than Adams. That's just one example, but there are others. The point is that his BPA First, last, and always is not enabling him to build up the team across the board. I'm willing to give him one more year to fill the pass rush and OL holes, but if he doesn't it's time to find someone who can do the job right. As for Bowles, I remain convinced that he will never get to the SB, let alone win one, and am willing to eat crow if he proves me wrong, but I don't see where he's made the most of the players he's been given. Moreover, he seems to coach not to lose, rather than to win, which I suspect is rooted in his defensive mindset, and I don't see that ever changing. I know he's not going to be fired before the end of the season unless something catastrophic happens, but frankly I would if I were GM. Why waste any more time, and why retard the growth of Darnold? Am I impatient? Hell yes! One SB in 56 years is way too little success. And no, that's not the fault of Macc or Bowles, but they took the job.
You think Bowles "retarded" the growth of Darnold? How? They both have glaring flaws that can be learned / fixed over time. One isn't better then the other IMO. Mac is about to get rid of the 2015 draft outside of LW. 2016 doesn't look great either. Mac came in as the expert scout.
^ This He tries to keep the games close in the hopes of winning it in the 4th, which is a horrible strategy in itself, but the problem is the team ends up getting killed in most 4th qtrs under his watch anyway. You'd think he'd try to adjust a failing game day philosophy.
Where did I say that???? But if he's allowed to continue in the job, I believe he will hold Darnold's development back. And please don't say that the development of the QB is up to the OC and QB Coach! It's up to the HC to make sure those guys are doing their jobs, and if he can't detrmine if they are (like Rex), then that's his ultimate fault. Fortunately for Bowles (and Macc) Darnold is far more complete than anyone imagined. I know you're going to defend Bowles no matter what, so I won't waste any time or words trying to get you to see it differently.
If Darnold becomes as good as I and many others think he will, then Maccagnan's decision to trade up from #6 to #3 will be one of the best trades in franchise history. It was a huge gamble at the time. I really thought the Browns would take Darnold at #1, and then the Giants would take Rosen at #2, leaving the Jets to choose between Mayfield and Allen. Not ideal after giving up 3 2nd Round picks and the #6 overall pick, but somehow things finally went the Jets way and Darnold became a Jet. No doubt Mac and the Jets lucked into getting Darnold, but I don't like that being a criticism of fans towards Mac. Truly Darnold fell to the Colts at #3 overall, and Mac traded up to get him. He just did it before anyone else had a chance to and likely for less than he would on draft day. Risky at the time, brilliant in the end. You have to take risks in life to succeed and I think Mac is a risk taker. I prefer that to playing it safe, but occasionally you will be wrong. That is life.
Not sure how you wanted him to be more aggressive considering the qbs he has had so far. Not sure he was keeping it close in purpose or getting the most he could out of pedestrian talent on o.
I think Bowles, Bates and McCown have done an excellent job getting Darnold ready. Plenty of reps, and Darnold took those reps and made something out of them unlike Petty and Hack. So far he hasn't held Darnold back. Trust and talent go a long ways and can completely change how a coach operates his game-plan. Especially the QB position.
Why do you think he will hold darnold back? We have seen 2 different qbs have career years under tb so far
Because he isn't a winner. He plays not to lose. His clock management and situational awareness, and in-game adjustments are still problems after 3 years (and how many years playing and coaching before that?). I could be wrong, and frankly hope I am. I hope all of a sudden the "light bulb" goes on and he becomes the Second Coming of Vince Lombardi, or at least Weeb Ewbank, but I really don't see that based on his record so far.
I hear your point and I don't completely disagree but I do think he gets conservative with a lead and I've seen instances where it appears the team is running its four minute offense in the third quarter. I don't like Bowels.. he certainly has some good qualities and does a few things well but I don't think he's the right man for the job. It doesn't matter who else is out there.. if you don't believe he's you guy it's time for a change and that's the way I feel until proven otherwise I'm sorry to say.
Hmmm and you wonder why he doesn't get aggressive in certain situations when there's crap at the QB position. Not saying Bowles is perfect, but fans need to start considering the situations at hand before making assumptions.
In that sense, no he hasn't, I give him credit for giving Sam the reps - although was that really his decision? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt there. And maybe the vanilla game plans and lack of throwing deep are on purpose to keep things under warps until the season starts. but I would've tried a few things just to see how they might work. Bottom line is that so far he hasn't shown me anything really different than what he's done in the past. If he's planning a big surprise when the season starts, I look forward to it. As to the "trust and talent" part, he seemed to have trusted McCown, but still failed to go for it in a few key situations with him. We'll see if Sam gives him more courage.
