Actually I somewhat understand why he took it. The Jets have the 2nd best 3rd down stop percentage in the NFL, and he was assuming the Pats were gonna go for it on 4th and 2. I would've taken the 4th and 2 and gambled on a short yardage play but at this point who gives a damn. Get this clown out of here.

I can't stand this coach ... but he did the right thing. No way the Pats don't go for 4th and 2 ... and no way we're stopping them on 4th and 2. They wound up getting 500 yards. The decision to take the penalty is just more evidence that Bowles is completely rattled and second-guessing himself at this point. Had he forsaken the penalty it would've been 4th and 2, leaving the Pats with only one chance to score, and making have to decide to take the FG (likely), go for it, and/or go for the TD. Leaving them with only 2 yards to make it did not make Brady's job realistically any harder, but giving Brady two chances to achieve the same exact result is dumb. But that's Todd Bowles for you.
