DBs and an edge rusher aren't going to help Sam develop. We definitely need to add a couple of CBs, but we can do that in FA, or at least one in FA. There will be some good CBs available in FA. Edge Rusher will probably just have to wait, unless we add in one FA. IMO, unless we wind up trading down or trading Adams and/or Bell, our first 5 picks should be an OT, a WR, a C, a CB, and a RB. If we trade Adams, we can probably easily sign a FA SS or draft one in the 4th or 5th round that will be sufficient. The offense has been ignored long enough. Screw the D! We need to insure that Sam develops, is protected, and that Gase has tools with which to work if he has any hopes of succeeding as HC of the Jets.
Robbie is also a FA and needs resigned which cuts into funds for everything else. You're right it will take a few good offseasons. Hopefully Douglas does it right. I still think corners can be handled if free agency. But edge and oline outside of guards have to be drafted. Receiver could go either way. Also we need depth everywhere except maybe inside line backer.
We have 7 picks. But yeah the focus should be on offense. Not saying if someone really good drops that you don't take them. Its really hard to predict the draft. A talented edge could drop or a cb. I prefer not to but I could see them going for it... LT and WR should be the focus. Then Center and Edge. Personally feel better about a trade back than trading any of our talent, especially for peanuts.
My two cents, acknowledging right up front I’m at best usually completely wrong about any Jet draft. I have huge respect for JD so far and expect a great first draft for us like in forever. He is pragmatic, understands the trenches and seems to know his shit from a players viewpoint, having gained the respect of experts in the field. So I will be shocked if OL( LT/C/RT) and WR are not addressed at the top of the draft. CB will be in the mix around round 2-3. After that, depth we so desperately need. Free agency might tell us plenty as to how many options JD wants to keep open, including trading down some. I’m guessing one high value target in defense ( pass rusher) and offense ( OL or WR) are in consideration. I want a draft focused to expedite the development of Sam but I also want to give GW better tools to be dominant against great offenses. One can always dream. Non withstanding all the negativity and bitter disappointment of 2019, the team played respectable with many pleasant surprises from third and forth tier players. I really, really question either our training methods or physical conditioning program or whatever in the hell is driving such a large number of key injuries. I do want a playoff spot with our name next year and don’t give a rats’ ass about the strength of schedule.
Win the offseason. A solid draft along with good medium priced FA from winning teams. Lunch pail guys. That’s the start with an obvious emphasis on the point of attack.
I'm all for giving Sam help on O that's why I said the OL needs to be the priority and we need another game breaker skill guy. I would have no problem going O heavy in this draft as I agree it's long overdue. That being said there's a lot of positions that need to be addressed and depending on how the draft board unfolds will determine which direction we go in for certain picks. I'm on board with your first 5 picks and would have no problem if they go that route. Just no DL.
Get rid of the Johnsons that is for sure the #1 thing to do. #2 get a GM that knows how to rate talent so we start drafting players who will contribute to the team. #3 axe Gase.
What this team needs most is talent followed closely by depth (those injuries really suck when you have none). Rebuilding the OL methodically over the next 3-4 years is a better way to build a dominant OL than to throw all of our money and draft picks on the best guys available this year. For those saying that fixing our problems at CB or OLB won't help Sam, you are missing the fact that holding other teams to three snaps and getting our defense off of the field quickly give our offense more chances to rack up yards and points. It also helps our field position which can be vital in close games.
It's true. But the offensive line can not be a methodical rebuild. It needs a fast overhaul to avoid giving this young QB David Carr syndrome. He can't even think about reading plays at times because he has to instantly retreat. It happened all game long vs. The Ravens and he still played solid. Imagine if he had time? We do need those things on defense. But they're really secondary to putting pieces around the QB. We should look to supplement on defense. Some mid round picks and middle tier free agents, while bringing back the couple of solid pieces we have.
Not a bad line depending on the price tags on Conklin and Scherrf. If Thomas falls to us I would have no objections. I could also see trading back and taking Austin Jackson, Jederick Wills, or Tee Higgins.
It'd be money well spent. The Jets cannot go into 2020 without getting 3 new starters minimum. Everything starts in the trenches, if a team can control the line of scrimmage then they can do anything they want.
I'm not missing anything. It doesn't matter how many possessions we get when Sam is getting pounded on almost every one of them, his receivers aren't getting open, and we can't move the ball or score. Yes, the defense has needs, but too much focus has been put on it over the last 10 years while the offense has been almost completely ignored. A number of college teams have better OLs and offenses than we do. It's ridiculous. Taking the long approach to fixing the OL will almost certainly ruin Sam. He will sustain a serious injury or will get like David Carr or Kenny O'Brien. With the OL as it is, Bell is wasted, and the offense has little chance of winning against better teams. Fixing the D will not be enough to enable the team to win those games. With a strong offense, at least we'll have a puncher's chance of outscoring the other team. There have been a number of teams who have been pretty successful with a great offense and average/mediocre D. I'm not saying that's what I want, but that has a better chance of succeeding in the NFL than a great defense and a mediocre offense. We've seen that several times over the last 10 years. For a season or two, we can focus on the offense for a change and not waste the talent we already have, and then wind up having to look for a FQB again. Give Sam every chance to succeed (as well as our offensive HC), and we will be able to focus on the D needs next offseason. You can't fix everything in one offseason. The offense is where the most glaring needs are aside from CB, and as I said we can sign one or two in FA, draft one, and make that an acceptable position group that should be good enough for next season, and then focus on the edge, CB, completing the OL overhaul, and perhaps FS or ILB positions can be addressed as well. Yes, we need talent on offense. We have talent on D, but precious little on offense. It's ridiculous to be thinking about depth when we have holes at starting positions. The focus must be on building an NFL caliber offense.
Completely disagree. O line is nice... but as Dallas has shown all year its not the end all be all... they have perhaps the most talented o line in football and come up short non stop. Defense is just as valuable. So is having a decent WR group, QB, and other positions. I agree we need o line but we need a lot more. We aren't an O line from contending... we are an O line, WR1, CB1, edge and solid running back play from contending.
I will agree. But that still doesn't mean we are a contender with an O line. As I have said we are at least 2 years from finishing rebuilding. We could be competitive next year. But you dont reach for an O line when a WR or whatever is in front of you. If thomas drops (very unlikely) you take him. But you don't reach for someone you can get at 20 with the number 7 pick. And you don't over pay guards and rt tackles in free agency to bring them here. Also you still address Edge and Corner in some manner. We have a lot of holes, they all need addressed before we are a legit contender.
Of course it works in reverse: improving the offense, especially the OL, allows the offense to control possession and keeps the "D" off the field. In fact, in the modern NFL which is offense-driven, this is the easiest way to do things. But the Jets, with their stupid "Defense wins championships" philosophy which hasn't delivered a single championship, keep trying to fight reality. Is it really any wonder they're perennial losers?
The fact that an incompetent GM focused on D for years is irrelevant going forward. The team screams of need on the OL, Defensive edge and WR. It starts with Douglas having a future vision of what his team will look like. It's a continuous ongoing project. You put a good GM in place with a coaching staff that can adapt you will have years where you're healthy and compete and years where injuries and depth destroy you. This year we have a bad team with no depth and injuries. This team has a few pieces but it's really a project just to get to a point where we have enough personal across the board to build on. You can't ignore your draft spot and talent completely against need. You can trade out for value if you really understand the draft board. I think ignoring D is a huge mistake. There needs to be a short and long term plan and it has to be flexible depending on how the draft lines up and who's available in FA. The good organizations are in the hunt or bounce back because of continuity and both a short and long term plan based on need and availability. Robbie should be resigned but not for a dime more than his replacement value.
The problem is we're an OL away from being barely competent. Overhauling the OL is Job#1, everything else is secondary.
I agree. Defense is important so is offense. Complete teams sustain success. All 3 phase are important. We have focused on Defense way to much. I hope we go offebse heavy in this draft. But I also hope we pick up a potential CB1 and Edge along the way. Like I said we are at least 2 years from being a legit contender. Not at the cost of reaching and overpaying. Then you don't have the resources for next year to bring in more talent and you wasted resources this year you could of had in a trade back just to fill one need. To be competitive you have to build correctly. Ever wonder why new england always trades back? How often do you see Pittsburgh or Seattle trade up or over pay or reach?
