Here is how we had success under the Johnson's ownership during their first 10 years.

    THE FIRST 6 YEARS

We had a solid team going into 2000 based on Parcell's team building. Though he would step down from coaching before the start of the season he remained GM to finish what he started - which was one of the most amazing drafts in Jets history:

Here is that draft by player and pick:

    Shaun Ellis - 12
    John Abreham - 13
    Chad Pennington - 18
    Anthony Becht - 27
    Laveranous Coles - 78
    WIndrell Hayes - 143
    Tony Scott - 179
    Richard Seals - 218
    ----
Yes, Tuna amazingly got us 4 first round picks with little cost. Plus we scored Coles in the third round.

This infusion would set us up and be the core of our team for the next 5 years. It garnered 2 playoff appearances for Herm and one for Mangini. This was also boosted by Mangini drafting Brick and Mangold in the first round in 2006 shoring up our line for years.

Thus the first stretch of success was the result of an amazing bounty from the 2000 draft that allowed us to quickly rebuild our team into solid contenders. I'm still now convinced we wouldn't have beat the Patriots in the championship game in 2004 if we would have made one of those damn FGs. Especially with Aberham coming back.

    THE REX YEARS

This was the only time I can remember that the Jets adopted a "win now" attitude.

In 2009 and especially in 2010 we spent like drunkin sailors, often structuring contracts that were light in the first year, and greatly increased in the following years. This allowed up to stock major FA talent and make trades. There were too many signing to name but some of the bigger names were, Santanio Holmes, Brylon Edwards, LT, Wayne Hunter, Jim Leonhard, Tony Richardson, Antonio Cromartie, Bart Scott, Lito Sheperd, etc.

We also gave large back ended contract extensions to Revis, Ferguson, and made Mangold the highest paid center. We also gave up multiple draft picks during trades for Scott, Shepard, Edwards, etc.

Thus we went all in building around our young QB and gave it our best shot. We did have the top defense and the top rushing game in 2010, so there was that.

We went all in and knew if we didn't win in 2010 we were headed for a tough few seasons afterwards. That was the price we paid. It wasn't until 2013 that our cap finally began to recover. The only way we could have stayed genuinely competitive was if we hit home runs in the draft. But they were horrible. Beyond horrible really.

A huge draft gave us six seasons, a young Qb, and a core to build around that lasted for years. Win now and sign tons of FAs around our young QB gave us two seasons.

That was the start of where we are now.

Would you like to have a draft like 2000 or do you think TL and a mini rebuild with our decent draft positions is more valuable then a monster draft(s) that could stabilize your team for years and immediately make you a competitor? Perhaps even a top team.

Its something to consider when we look at our current situation. We currently don't need deal wiz to get us a blue chip draft if we get the first pick. Those type of draft(s) would just fall into our laps - if we wanted it. Even bigger drafts than in 2000!

Parcells blew the #1 overall pick in 1997 by trading it for peanuts.

Good post. Don’t need 4 1st rounders to turn team around... we need solid drafting over a few years. If we had that during the years you spoke, and Sanchez was FQB. We would still be competitive. That did not happen. Sanchez was underwhelming, and quite frankly our drafts were just absurdly bad.

It was a lot to ask. Our 2010 and 11 drafts were bare bone from the trades we made in 09. and 10. We traded away 11 picks, mostly for the guys mentioned in my above post. Win now had already struck our team building. In 2011 we got Wilkerson in round 1 but didn't have another pick until 94. Plus all the FA's were melting away and had to be replaced.

Wilkerson was only good pick! But we paid the man and disappeared. Unfortunate. May have been broken leg contributed.

That was an issue in replacing the older players, picks like
    coples,
    ducasse,
    Wilson,
    Ellis,
    Pryor,
    Hill,
    Milner,
    Geno Smith,
    Amaro,
    Devin Smith,
    Mcdougle,
    Stewart,
    Hanson,
    lee,
    hackenburg,
    Saunders,
    leggett,
    Donahue,
    Burris,
    maulden,
    petty,
    polite, etc.

these are all higher picks, all of them true busts!!! A lot left team never got on another.

A lot of them 1st and 2nd rounders. And add in we traded multiple high 2nd round picks. That’s a lot of wasted draft capitol.

No way any team can survive that incompetence! That’s why we are here today, throw in generationally bad GMs in idzik and Mac, and even worse HC has n Gase.

So draft not producing go ahead and sign high ticket FAs. That did not work out so well either.

Just amazing to be jets fan! I miss the Rex/Herm/Parcells/ and prior years where at least we were fun to watch! Stars like Gasteneau, Klecko, O’Brien, walker, toon, chrebet, Pennington, Abraham, T Jones, testeverde, Coles, moss, etc. truly sad, on today’s team can you name one? No!

Watching jets last 5 yrs, like watching a funeral unfold!

Parcells signed Jumbo Elliot and drafted Jason Fabini.

We did not lose to Elway because of the tackle position.

Well that LT won a SB! It was move that did not work out in hindsight. You are right probably not why we lost to Elway.

Agreed. Plus if I recall the wheeling an dealing of picks from trading the number 1 to the Rams got us Dedric Ward, Jason Ferguson, Leon Johnson, and James Farrior. He turned the number 1 pick into 4 solid starters. This was at a time when we had a lot of rebuilding to do. We'd go 12-4 the following season.

Parcells traded the 1st pick for the 6th overall pick, plus a third, fourth, and seventh.

If he had used that 6th on Walter Jones (HOF OG), instead of trading it to the Seahawks, so they could take him, would you still think it was a bad trade?

Even beyond that, having made the trade with Seattle, if the Jets had selected Tony Gonzalez (13th overall) with the 8th pick, rather than James Farrior, would you still think it was a bad trade?

Maybe the trade was just fine, but the picks he made weren't so hot.

Sure. I would take the HOF player at 1, but you make some good points on what if’s. The trade may have been better if we picked other players. Farrior far from HOF, especially his time with jets! And the other picks useful, but don’t add up to HOF player, My personal opinion, I did not like the trade, Parcells tried to be too cute, should have stood pat, I think it would have turned out a little better on value gotten in the draft. Overall the trade made little difference, but trading the pick did not turn out great in long run. Only year Parcells had good draft with Jets was 2000, otherwise not good.

Really, a generational talent in Pace, for 4 meh players.... actually Ferguson was the best of the 4. And the latest pick. Too cute for his britches, but wanted to shake things up. He did marvelous job in FA and getting good culture. Would have gone 12-4 regardless of taking Pace or not. But we would have a long time pro bowl LT.

Walter would have been great pick! And to get extra picks, may have been ideal.

Not big fan of trading the #1 pick, you sick the worst to get it, and it’s a privilege. So take the best player! More than often the best strategy!

This is simply untrue. Parcell's basically won the 1997 draft in hindsight. We got four solid starters instead of one great tackle. You might consider Pace a better value then that but most analysts wouldn't.

We improved from 1-15 to 9-7 in one year and then went 12-4 the next. We wouldn't have been able to do that with just a great right tackle.

Why would Parcells not be interested in LT Orlando Pace??? He helped a crap team WIN the Super Bowl 3 years later and had a Hall of Fame career. Just USE the First pick!!!!

Um, Pace was a LEFT Tackle. And if you don't know the difference in that there's no help for you.

Bill Parcells Tremendous EGO cost the Jets Peyton Manning. All Peyton wanted was an ASSURANCE from BP that he would be in fact the #1 pick and Parcells WOULDNT give it.

My personal theory: Parcells KNEW he was only gonna stick around 2-3 years Coaching so he wanted NO PART of Rookie QB developing. Also Bill wanted to be the REASON Jets won Super Bowl, not some hotshot STAR Quarterback. He liked to win with only above average guys Simms, Hostetler and Vinny would have fit the same bill....

It was over a money problem. We spent way to much on Neil O'Donnell and we were broke. We were stuck with O'Donnels contract for another season.

I found an article from back in the day that explains this wild draft better than I could. Its a great read.

Well respect your opinion, I don’t think that was great draft at all. Don’t see those 4 players as valuable as a HOF LT. And were not critical to that season’s success. But if he stood pat, would of maybe picked some players with our own picks. What did we pick with our picks in same rounds? HOF player>4 serviceable players. Dedric Ward... Leon Cmon. I get it he gets cudos cause he is Parcells and he did magic turning us around. But not because of this crappy draft! He hit in FA and turned the team around, as we had some talent. He got good leadership in the house. We had really bad coach and GM before he got here.

1 James Farrior 8 LB - starter. Played better after traded to Pitt.for 4th rounder
    2 Rick Terry 31 DT - bust
    3 Dedric Ward 88 WR - Serviceable
4 Terry Day 102 DE -bust
    4 Leon Johnson 104 RB - serviceable
    5. Lamont Burns 131 G - bust
    5 Raymond Austin 145 -bust
6 Tim Scharf 164 LB -bust
6 Chuck Clements 191 QB - barely serviceable
    7 Steve Rosga 202 DB - bust
7 Jason Ferguson - best player taken
