Are they insane? https://x.com/nyjets/status/1922375040894411205 Poor Guy has had to punt more than any punter in the history of punters while at the Jets.
FWIW the rookie they signed (Kai Kroeger) can really kick I'm not one to worry about punters but I get the concern about axing a team first guy and leader when you are trying to build a culture
Well, I hope he kicks better than that other rookie (Mann?) that was meant to be next big punter but was a massive Jet level let down. But yes, it was more the culture thing, nice guy, extremely good at his job, how many times did he flip a field, I get he is 39yo and I also guess it will be cap related.
I didn't see the reason why. Was it a contract thing of did we upgrade? Its sorta hard to find a good punter these days.
Morsted wasn't really that great last year. 2.5 million cap savings as well. I liked him, but understand the move.
Yah…after what we went through when we cut Morestead last time, this isn’t the place I’d be looking to save a little money honestly. Not the hugest deal but for a team whose offense sucks as bad as ours has, having a solid reliable punter is a pretty critical need, and Morestead was steady and reliable. Reminds me of how Mac used to cut good kickers and we ended up with worse ones later So yeah, not a fan of this move…we had a good reliable solid punter and now we have a question mark…hope the new kid is good, but honestly I’d have just kept Morestead
100th time we tried this rebuild maybe 100th time is the charm? But I know a Youth movement that can work for sure its old fart Woody kicking rocks.
Agreed. He did not have a great year and he is now 39. Yes he wasn't terrible last year, but a decline was noticeable, and it is downhill from here. I know last time we got rid of him we had to bring him back, but he is way too old now. You don't get better at 39. Last time he beat the odds, he was younger and he was playing better than last year. We are talking 39 year old guy now who just had a big drop-off in performance. Father time is undefeated, even for punters, and last year's decline at his age showed that his time us up, as simple as that. We can younger and cheaper, and more than likely better than Morestead was going to look like this year. A no brainer decision to move on.
2023 NYJ 17 99 4,831 48.8 62 0 2024 NYJ 17 63 2,972 47.2 75 0 Both are better than his career average.
I watched the games. He was not good last year. In 2023 and 2021 when he played for us he was significantly better. He is not getting better at 39. No need to hang on to his pre 2023 accomplishments, he is done. He might get a chance if someone's starting punter gets hurt, but effectively his long career has come to an end. He lasted longer than vast majority of them and is a really good guy. But this page has been turned and rightfully so.
Yeah, i agree w the move--it was time. Douglas poured so much $$ into old vets Rodgers, Tyron Smith, Duane Brown, CJ Uzomah, Zuerlein, Morestead and it got us squat! I assume Greg Z. will be cut next and good riddance. He only costs us 3 out of our first 8 games last year. Would prefer, however, that our kicker AND our punter were not both rookies, especially rookie free agents.
He’s 39 and we’re not exactly in position to compete for a championship. Might as well have a camp shootout and try to find the punter of the future.
our most consistent and arguably best player the last few years GONE. A sad day in Jets land. If I look back on this post and theres any truth to it after next season im gonna be PISSED.
