This is nonsense, where is there any proof that BP knew there was a deal in place? Did you pull this out of thin air? BB was paid an additional 1M to stay as DC making him (by far) the highest paid DC in the game, with the agreement that he would become HC. And if BP had left and did not beccome the GM, BB would have left anyway bc of his public destain for Steve Gutman the then President of the NYJ. BP did everything in his power to set this franchise up for the furture. BB is squarely responsible his broken promises and depature. Look what is happening to the Cowboys now. Since BP had retied almost all of thier coaching staff is fleeing. Even after BB left, BP stayed and kept the franchise in tack and even assisted the new ownership in making necessary replacements. He had a lot of respect for Leon Hess did more than is share to leave us in the best place possible.
It's not nonsense, it's common knowledge. Hess paid BB to stay on 1 more year, it was not to become HC. It was in his contract to become HC but they didn't know how long BP would stay.
Show me where it was common knowledge that BB left bc of BP or that BP knew that BB had a deal in place with Kraft. Maybe it was a common assumption, but that is about it. Belicheck despised Steve Gutam and later was quoted as calling him one of the biggest losers in all sports. BB was not only given the 1M with the understanding that he would become coach, he did become coach and was contractually binded to us. To say that he left because of BP is nothing more than speculation.
Favorable. Couldnt care how he left. He could have quit minutes before kickoff for the first game of his potential 4th season and I would never change my mind on what he did for this franchise. This franchise was a joke. Players would illegally change birth certificates not to be drafted by the Jets. Nobody wanted to play here. He comes along and gets Curtis Martin and within games of his first season..puts respect back into a org. that was one of the few laughing stocks in the NFL.
I think it was in the book "Patriot Reign". Check it out. If Parcells didn't stay on w/ the organization BB would still be our HC today and maybe we'd have a trophy or 2.
LOL.. You can't compare Herm to Al Groh... Groh was a Hold the fort guy and not the guy the Jets or anyone wanted as a Head coach... And Groh, Given the way he got the job, had a hard time getting respect in the locker room and knew it. You know what though - I'll take Groh, a COACH who can actually COACH one side of the ball long before I'd take that Ass-Clown Motivational speaker again. Groh > Herm
Here is the qute for BB on Gutman: "In all my years of football I've never known a man who talked more and won less than Steve Gutman". If you ever get around to finding proof to support your claims, post them.
I never said he didn't say anything about Gutman, that is irrelevant. Gutman called Belichick a sad, confused man or something like that after he resigned- that's why BB bashed him. It had nothing to do w/ why he walked away from us. yeah he did a great job that we needed 4 miracle wins just to have a good record and we lost 6 of 9 to miss the playoffs- that's much better than actually going to the playoffs.
the jets would still be the laughingstock of the league without parcells. u need a coach who changes the atmosphere, u cant be a winner until you know what winning is like. jets won under herm because they already were left over from parcells era, and parcells is also like the goddess of every good coach in the nfl. Coach of the year Sean Payton - under parcells, runner up Mangini - under parcells/his staff even the hated 3 super bowl winning Belicheck - taught by parcells how do u not think hes one of best coaches ever especially for the jets. Anyone who takes a rich kotite team and gets 7 pts away from the super bowl is a god
Favorable. Before Parcells, we were like the Detroit Lions of today. We were the biggest JOKE in the NFL. Look back at tapes of our old drafts. The guys at ESPN had a field day shredding us. Everybody laughed at us. I remember watching a game with Joe Namith doing the color commentary where he said, "Coach said that he is looking for some consistency on the field. Well he's got it. The team is playing consistently bad." OUCH!!! Because we were so bad for so long, even after Parcells, we still are subject to the bias in the press with them writing "Same Old Jets" every-time something goes wrong. How many of you remember the "Joke", What does J E T S stand for? Just End The Season. The only players we ever signed were washed up, past their prime guys whom nobody else wanted that were looking for just a few more paychecks. That all changed under Parcells. We actually became a REAL NFL organization. Everything that we are enjoying today has it's roots in the Parcells era. Maybe we didn't win it all but he did point us in the right direction and show us the RIGHT way to get it done. After all those years of wallowing in mediocrity, I feel that THAT makes him one of the best coaches we ever had.
He gave instant credibility to this franchise. If he would have stayed in 2000, I think we wouldn't have fell apart late in the year to the team getting frustrated with GROH. The Ravens had the D that year, but I think we could have beat them in the playoffs (If We Made It).
Pretty much what I would say. At the same time though I would add that the way he left had the potential to (and almost did) return the franchise back to being a joke. We were really lucky that didn't happen. I think BP is a great head coach and deserves to be in the hall of fame, but I also believe that he is also living quite a bit off his past successes.
Favorables across the board, he righted the ship, seemingly permanently for this franchise. Other than a few hiccups, this team has been competitive since the dreaded 1-15 fiasco. Sure we've had "same old jets" moments, but the "same old jets" of pre parcells were pathetic beyond belief. I think those days are buried for good, and it all started with parcells.
