1. Seattle- Hutchinson(1st rounder), Jones(first rounder) Womack(2nd rounder) Mcintosh(1st rounder) - Had a dominant line for a number of years 2. Arizona- Davis(1st rounder) Shelton(First rounder) Kendall(former first rounder via different team) Clement(2nd rounder)- This one always showed great potential but didnt work out so well long term. 3. Cinci- Jones(1st rounder) Anderson(1st rounder) Steinbach(high 2nd rounder) Mayberry(Former 1st rounder w/ different team) when healthy this was a great line. So it has been tried w/ mixed results. i gotta say t6hough I'm a huge advocate of taking Blaylock in round 1. We might even be able to trade down a few spots and still get him.
I have always felt that you can Build the Line w/ Later rd. picks & through FA. Spending High Draft Picks on someone that is a "Project" or "needs work" is a gamble and not worth it. There were only a Few OL who were "Sure Bets" and actually panned out to be great.
Blalock is my pick and for the very reason Leberfeld mentioned. Particularly importatnt in our division, with some great D-lines. I am all for spending another first rounder on the line. Just think about how young and potentially dominant that line could be: gives me shivers.
There's no way of telling whether or not he's a franchise back or not at the moment. He certainly has looked like one the last couple of seasons. I suspect that his numbers will go down a bit this year because I think he'll be used even more sparingly than he was in Chicago. I expect Leon Washington to get 175+ carries as his wingman.
I think that's exactly the reason we need to build up the offensive line. Blalock is the second best lineman in this class, regardless of position. It'd be stupid of us to waste a pick on a corner when Mangini uses a zone system more then half the time. Rarely are corners left one on one over the middle, only to the outside, and even when that happens theres a blitz package in place that will force pressure on the quarterback. Hank Poteat dominated when he was in and he's a journeyman. Drew Coleman played fine outside that play vs. Chicago. We can do it with makeshift corners, we can't play without a better blocking offensive line.
If we don't find a way to stop the run it won't matter what we have on the offensive line, they will never be on the field. Get help where we need it most.
I agree w/ you about stopping the run, but just as important is running the football. Up to this point, this offseason wehave done more to help the run D( Haynes, Pouha coming back, and Coleman) than we have to help the run blocking up front on O.
I'm not a huge advocate of a first round line. Atlanta has an excellent line and it's made up of nobodies. I want a guy with athletic talent, but I just don't see Blalock as someone who's going to make enough of an impact to justify a first round selection. If we're taking a guard, I'd rather trade back. -X-
Blalock is exactly the type of player that would be very high on a Mangini and Tannenbaum draft board. He was a team captain, had the highest wonderlic score out of all players entering the draft, is smart and hard working, and fills a position of need for the Jets. Kendall is getting up there in age, Moore was our weakest starter on the OL last season, and we have no depth at OG. If Blalock is still on the board at #25, there is a very good chance he is wearing green and white for the next few years.
love the idea of drafting Blalock. We need to trump Seymour,Warren, and Wilfork who are all guys drafted early, and are playing up to their draft position.
I was just peeking around and found this http://snap.stats.com/stats/nflinfo/playerstats.asp?id=7753&Submit=Go
Will Shields retired and their other options are Chris Bober or Tre' Stallings. Plus I don't think Staley is worth the 23rd pick and Brown might be gone by then as well.
