Yeah, Daisuke sucked tonight, but they have at least a 3 run lead going into the 8th so it should be alright. Okajima-Papelbon-Dirty Water.
This is totally depressing. The story is the same as it's been all year, this team can't hit consistently. Dropping 2 to Tampa Bay while avoiding Kazmir, and then helping Seattle break its 9 game losing streak is unacceptable. Even worse, we've lost a key ballplayer. Phillips is out 4-6 weeks now, and that's a huge blow. I know people will say well at least we have Giambi and Mienky, but we had them early in the year, and look how that worked out. Phillips was good for getting on base and being a good baserunner, plus his D was great. Sure, Giambi is decent at first, and Mienky is good, but while Giambi will get on base, and Mienky will get on, neither is the same presence in the lineup as Phillips. Ugh, it seemed like we were in good shape not too long ago. Now it seems to all be going down the drain.
I feel Phillips' injury is going to take a huge toll on us. His loss totally changes the composition of the lineup. We go from: Damon DH/LF Jeter SS Abreu RF ARod 3B Matsui LF/DH Posada C Cano 2B Phillips 1B Cabrera CF To: Damon DH/LF Jeter SS Abreu RF ARod 3B Matsui LF/DH Posada C Giambi 1B Cano 2B Cabrera CF So rather than a speedy bottom third of the lineup, that can get timely base hits, and be available for the top of the order to drive in, we have a top heavy lineup, filled with power hitters that are more consistently inconsistent than reliable. No, Phillips is not THE reason we will miss the playoffs, but he is going to be sorely missed, and a big reason we fail. Count on it. Giambi improved the bench, but not the starting lineup. Giambi's OBP is better than Phillips. We all know Giambi can get on base, but he's a liability on the basepath, where Phillips brings a much better dimension to the base running game. (And Phillips' .338 to Giambi's .347 isn't all that far off for a bottom of the lineup ballplayer.) Then we have to factor in that number of plays Phillips has saved, and would potentially save at first over Giambi, who while improved since coming back, does not have nearly as much range as Andy. But I do agree that there will be various reasons we miss the playoffs. --------------------- Speaking of missing the playoffs, I just wanted to talk about the biggest douchebag in sports announcing Michael Kay. Did anyone see the batting practice show yesterday? He went off, and was practically barking at Leiter about how he was convinced Cleveland was a flawed team, and wouldn't be able to get it done, while the Yankees would easily walk away with the wild card. Sorry Mike, looks like you were wrong, but what else is new? I can't stand that POS.
What really irked me was the WAY he was talking, more than what he was saying. It was exactly the same as the way he was talking that time on his radio show about mentioning a no hitter while it was in-process. His arrogant "I know it all, and you had better just agree with me if you know what's good for you" style is really grating on my nerves lately. It's sad because I still remember back to when I was a kid and Kay and Sterling did the radio broadcast for the Yanks. They were a great team. Apart, they're two big douchebags.
im going to tonites game, hopefully i can bring some luck to this team.. they certainly need a spark, maybe wanger can bring it tonite..
6 hits in 3 innings, but only one run. yankees better be able to beat horacio ramirez. this is embarrassing
THE YANKEES ARE ON FIRE! Hit after hit this inning, unbelievable. Abreu, Rodriguez, and Posada all with HRs. Cano with a 4 hit night, arod giving me the scare of my life with a stupid head-first slide into first. So far, 7 runs on 7 hits so far!
it's going just as I expected. of course, that plan would mean a loss tomorrow night. we'll see if that happens.
