I'm a Virginia resident so I don't get to watch to many Jets games live so I was hoping to get some feedback on Coleman. I haven't seen a tremendous amount posted about him which is odd seeing as he was our marquee free agent acquisition, a player we targeted and fought to get. Is he panning out as the FO expected? Is he a good fit for our defense? Is he the long term answer? What are his strengths/weaknesses so far? He is probably in his prime years, so is this a position we need to continue to strengthen or is he going to allow us to address other positions? Thoughts? Comments?
He's been very stellar against the run... But as you can tell from our 0 sacks through two games, he hasn't added anything to the passrush....
I'm more concerned with his ability to occupy blockers so Thomas can get around the edge rather than him getting pressure.
I didn't look at the Patriots tape afterwards and I only noted marginally what was happening on defense as I watched the Ravens game again, however it seemed like the Ravens were running at Coleman, Barton and Hobson a lot more than they were running at Ellis, Vilma and Thomas. I started noting the differential in the first quarter and then realized I wouldn't have time to do the Clemens/offensive line review if I didn't keep the tape rolling when the Jets were on defense. For what it's worth 8 of the first 12 Ravens runs went to the right of D-Rob and into Coleman, Barton and Hobson. They got 26 yards that way and 12 in the 4 rushes to the right. One of the reasons the score was so low early on was that neither team could get the run game untracked all that well. Then the Ravens ran well in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and built their big lead and the Jets ran well in the 4th and almost caught up.
I'm thrilled with KC's play (both of em, actually) 3-4 Defensive Lineman aren't sack generators- they're run stoppers. And that's just what Kenyon Coleman is doing. Remember the last time Willis McGahee was held to under 100 yards rushing against the Jets? I sure don't. Our sack deficiency isn't our D-Line's fault. Take a look at an effective 3-4 defense from last year. The Charger's Igor Olshansky racked up a stunning 1.5 sacks at Kenyon Coleman's position. Their D-Line as a whole netted less than 10 sacks, despite perfect fits for the system in Jamal Williams and Luis Castillo. They're occupying the O-line, so that OLB's Shaun Phillips and Shawn Merriman can split 30 sacks coming off the edges. (I think it may have been a couple shy of that actually, but you get my drift.) Sean Ellis said last year, "This isn't a stats defense. We aren't gonna get 10 sacks a year. We're building a wall." That is exactly the mentality we need on the D-Line. Kenyon, D-Rob and Ellis are all fits! Update the linebackers!
Who plays on which side? I always thought Hobson/Vilma/Ellis was the strong side and Thomas/Barton/Coleman was the weak side.
That was last year. This year (at least in the Raven's game) Hobson, Barton and Coleman were on the right and Ellis, Vilma and Thomas were on the left. I didn't focus down to see what was happening on passing downs but I'd assume that Hobson plays on rushing downs at ROLB and Bowens comes in for the passing downs. That would explain the shift of Thomas to the left as a simplifying move.
LE- Ellis (strong side) NT- Robertson RE- Coleman (weak side) LOLB- Thomas (strong) LMLB- Barton (strong) RMLB- Vilma (weak) ROLB- Hobson (weak)
As stated he's doing good against the run. Thomas has been on the other side behind Ellis. Hobson is getting no pressure on Coleman's side, but that's because he's been neutralized by TE's or Running backs. We need Bowens in on passing downs. Hobson has looked slow off the line and unable to beat average blockers. Outside of O-line and D-line I would think OLB is becoming a major area of concern for our Team. The D-Line needs some Bigger bodies. Robertson could very well play an End in the 3-4. I noticed Nagta at end a lot last week and could see D Rob filling the same role if we can get that big NT in the middle. It comes down to the same problem as last year. The Line is OK at best and our LB's are not great fits for the 3-4. Coleman has been our best lineman so far and looks like a good signing.
Ok, went back and took a look and this is what I actually saw: On first downs Barton is strong and Vilma is weak. On passing downs Barton is out a lot and Vilma is strong with Kassell/Harris lining up weak some and the Jets going with just 3 backers some. The other formation that the Jets used a bunch was Barton in the box and lined up slightly weak and Vilma 5 yards behind him and lined up slightly strong. They're effectively using the two backers right up the middle in that one.
