This will be the last year Shea Stadium is still in buisness, I think it would be great if the Jets played one more game at Shea Stadium before it goes for good. It is where the Jets first started as the Jets, I doubt you'd get Woody to play there even for just one game, but it don't have to be a regular season game, maybe a preseason game? Just a thought. Shea is a part of our teams history.
I love the idea, but I don't think it would ever happen. Perhaps a petition for a preseason game might have a cat's chance, but I doubt it - only fans get sentimental about this sort of thing. Even the throwback jerseys are just a way to make more money through sales... I still have to say again that I love the idea.
Well Jake Gyllenhaal is gonna start filming a new Namath movie, you'd figure they'd utilize Shea before it's torn down. So one way or another, the "Jets" might be back at Shea. But I love the idea of a pre season game.
Bring OJ Simpson back as Master of Ceremonies to immortalize his 2,000-yard game he played there against the Jets. Then, when he gets to the podium, demolish the stadium with explosives.
The place was God-awful that day. I have nothing but terrible memories of going to Shea. From central Jersey, we had to drive to Newark and park our car. Then take a train into Penn Station and switch to another train to get to Shea. It was either that or get buried in unbelievable traffic. Coming home, you were always wet and lines of people waiting to get on the train cars. Smoking was allowed and most guys would be soused and cold and wet and smoking and puking on the train. Then, the stadium itself was always a baseball stadium... Jets were 2nd fiddle, always. No attempt to put sod on the pitchers mound, for example. The cold damp wind would come in off the bay in winter and conditions were usually horrible. In December you couldn't get out of the wind... snow blowing into the open areas... no cover, so you're soaking wet. Then the sun sets and the rain freezes on you.... might as well have been Green Bay but more damp. Then you had to retrace your steps to go home soaking wet. Sorry Long Islanders, but good riddance to Shea. It was never a football stadium and should never have held the Jets captive for so long all those years. The Jets deserved better and NY should have accomodated them, especially after they won the Superbowl. But... Oh No....
The Jets actually started play as the Jets at the Polo Grounds I believe. Shea was mercifully awful to watch a football game. The box seats along the first base line were actually so low you'd have to shout at the team to sit down so you could see the game. "Barzilauskas, sit down you big fatty!"
The problem with the view is, it's so spread out. Take a regular football stadium as you know it today and flatten it out and spread it out like a pancake. The slope is so gradual that even if you have tickets in the 20th Row, you're 300 yards away from the field! Honest to God, if you're in the last rows, you need to watch the game thru binoculars, that's how far away the action is!
I've suggested this to the Jay Cross in a letter and I think the Jets should consider it. Here's why: Instead of drawing 20,000 fans, I think they'll get a sellout and that's a lot of concession money.
but just like the jets chances of playing at shea.. It aint happening.. JUst kidding they will turn it around soon as we get a line
The Jets never played at the Polo grounds, they were the Titians then, when they became the Jets their home was Shea, and I know Shea was not the greatest place for football, but it was home none the less, it was home to Broadway Joe and the Championship Jets, the 68 AFL title game against Oakland was at Shea, lots of history, one last game there for the Jets is the right thing to do, I hope this somehow happens. Every year the Jets play the Giants in the preseason, make it at Shea, the crowd would be 10 times biggr then at the swamp.
Better make it a warm weather early season game - nothing is worse then Shea in the cold - with the wind whipping right through the place and swirling around... ...I would go to a game at Shea - and I can't wait to be there to see it demolished! gg
You were actually at the OJ Simpson game? I've seen film clips and it did look pretty cold. That shot of the Bills lifting him up on their shoulders with the wind blowing, snow all over the place, seats half empty, pretty pathetic. I read somewhere that the Jets presented Weeb with some kind of a snow blower or lawn tractor before the game during a ceremony and it was so cold they couldn't start it up.......
I don't think a regular season game has any shot at happening at Shea, but a pre-season would be just as good.
Im all for this as long as they:: 1. Bring Back The Bob Cleveland Band 2. Revert to the old bathrooms' 3. NO FLYING LAWN MOWERS 4. The greatest PA announcement EVER. "Would the owner of a Red Buick LeSabre please report to your car.....It's on Fire!!! (as the smoke billowed over the top of the stadium) 5. One chant of COSSELL SUCKS!!! ....ahhhh! The memories.
