Midway throu that important 3rd year, let?s see how good Mangini and Tanny did on their First Draft. 1st Round: 4th overall - Brick - Plays like a Franchise LT+ 29th overall - Mangold - One of the better Centers in the League + 2nd Round 49th overall - Clemens - Bust, some may make the arguement that he was never given a fair Chance, but he had two opportunities to win the Startingjob in Camp and had another one to show what he can do during last season, he did nothing. - 3rd Round 76th overall - Schlegel - Bust, nuff said - 97th overall - Eric Smith - At least he?s starting, but just because there?s noone else +/- 4th Round 103rd overall - Brad Smith - Great Special teamer and gets a 1st down every now and then +/- 117th overall - Leon - Playmaker + 5th Round 150th overall - Pociask - Bust, never brought anything to the table - 6th Round 189th overall - Drew Coleman - At least he?s on the field every week -/+ 7th Round 220th overall - Titus Adams - Bust - I?d give this Draft a C, the Clemens and Schlegel Picks gives it a real knock.
Most drafts get 2 good starters and 2 depth guys, and the rest are usually cut. Every team doesn't hit Home Runs with every pick. Most do fail. The 06 has to get above a B because of Brick's emergence as a dominator, Mangold, and Leon alone. Titus Adams should have no bearing on the grade at all. 3 draftees in the 7th round start or are depth players. The rest usually are playing in another league somewhere. 1st - 4th are important. 5-7th you pray you get a steal. IMHO.
I'll give the draft a B at this point. I don't think the jury is in on Clemens yet, and I think at worst he will be a decent back up. Don't know if it will be for the Jets though. Brad Smith isn't in Favre's play book after a pretty good camp. Think he could be contributing more. Eric Smith stinks
Brick, Mangold, Leon, and Smith were all good picks. The jury is still out on Clemens tho it isn't looking pretty. Posiack I thought was never given a fair chance. The rest were busts tho
You can't count Titus Adams as a bust. He was a 7th rounder. The fact that Coleman is even on the field every week as a 6th rounder has got to make that pick a success.
that draft deserves a higher grade than a c. at least a b or b+. both 1st rounders have worked out very well. that is important because we dont have big money invested in someone riding the bench. taking clemens with the second rounder hasn't worked out but at least we didnt take leinart in the 1st as some wanted. still turns out that was a bad pick. the other picks after that always seem to be a crapshoot. leon turned out very good, the others not so much. but the guys that were taken to be difference makers, brick and mangold have delivered. so even though they had some later round misses, the draft as a whole was a success.
Calling a 7th round pick a bust is stretching it. Clemens being called a bust is stretching it too. Wait until his Jets career comes to an end. Lets see what happens. I give the draft an A. 3 Pro Bowl Level Players. Impressive.
Honestly, this could be Clemens' last year as a Jet. Favre may play a season or two after this, so drafting and developing a similar style QB like Rhett Bomar could be smart. I hope Favre stays because just having him on this roster will be an incentive for big time free agents to come here. I'm anxious to see what other needs we fill through free agency. Our FO could put us in an awesome situation to build for the future in upcoming drafts. Big name FAs: Nnamdi Asomugha CB Oakland, Brian Dawkins S Philly, Dunta Robinson CB Houston, Chris Gamble CB Carolina, Karlos Dansby LB Arizona, Bart Scott LB Baltimore, Mike Peterson LB Jacksonville, TJ Houshmanzadeh WR Cincy, Jordan Gross OT Carolina...this upcoming FA class is full of great offensive linemen and defensive backs. We have an opportunity to bring in some proven vets.
I'll be stunned if Favre is back next year. As far as future FA's goes, if Favre stays there will be few FA's. The Jets shot their load last year for a few years. If Favre goes, it will fee up 12 million, but they will have to replace him of course.
Your grading is way too harsh. Do you know how uncommon it is for a team to have a draft where they get more than a few starters and a few special teamers??? We got a huge playmaker and more than three starters in this draft. (Including a franchise left tackle and a franchise center on the offensive line) Overall, the draft was quite good. Obvioiusly, us assigning it a letter grade is a bit arbitrary, but I'd probably give it an A-. Maybe a B+ but I lean towards an A-.
I remember DURING that draft wanting the jets to take NT Gabe Watson with either of the third round picks__Schlegel (cut) and Eric Smith really stink. Rest of draft was good however. I don't think Clemens is bust yet as he hasn't been in enuf games. Drew Coleman? Hey for a 6th rounder what'ya expect?
Id definitely give this draft an A. 5th 6th and 7th round picks cant be busts. They can only be steals if they make an impact. 4 impact players including 3 who are amongst the best and most important on our team...definite A draft.
I still don't understand why we let Pociask go, I think he would have been as good this year as any of the TEs on the roster.
Why might this be Clemens' last year with the Jets? I haven't even heard a mention that he's soured so much that they'd cut him from a single source. He knows our offense better than any QB on this roster based on time with the team alone. I don't see why he wouldn't get a shot to start after Favre left unless an elite QB prospect fell into our laps or Ratliff/Ainge really really stepped up. '06 was a fine draft for us, but that draft was so loaded there has to be a couple of regrets. Gabe Watson and Max Jean Gilles were the ones everyone was screaming about back in '06. In hindsight, Anthony Montgomery, Jason Hatcher, Omar Gaither, and like a dozen other guys would have been great picks...oh well.
