I have seen very little written in favor of Ron Rivera. Fact is, he is one of the great defensive minds in the game today, completely turning around the Chargers defense after taking control of it when Cotrell was fired. He has experience in both the 4-3 (Bears) and 3-4 (Chargers) and is only 46. To me, he seems like a much better candidate than the flamboyant Rex Ryan, whose lack of modesty rubs me the wrong way. Rivera has been successful every place in which he has gone and should be the next coach of the Jets.
Wasn't Rivera a name mentioned as an outside shot when we were trying to replace Herm? I could swear I remember that. I'd give him a shot if other options don't pan out (Cowher, Shanahan, Ryan, Spagnuolo two of which are mostly likely out already.)
I like him as my number 2 choice, great coach, hopefully he has enough ties to bring in great coordinators
if i remember correctly he was highly spoken of a few years ago, not sure what happened but i think there were issues with his leaving chicago. i would have no issues taking a much closer look at him. wtf does it really matter if he is learning the 3-4, he would be the head coach not the dc, its the dcs job to run the defense. does brian billick not get a job with a team because he isnt a 3-4 guy? of course not he is an offensive guy its the dcs job to run the defense. the better thing about it is that he has experience with BOTH and is not completely and totally only a 3-4 or 4-3 guy.
There was some issues, I am not sure what, but they lead him to the Linebackers coach position in San Diego, although he did have some interviews as Head Coach and DCoordinator. His leaving Chicago seemd to be a personality thing
He was one of the first names being mentioned when the season was drawing to a close as a top candidate in the upcoming coaching turnovers. Before there were even any openings.
Just because he's a 4-3 man doesn't mean he will change our D. he hasn't changed SD. He is a smart enough guy to know to bring in a DC that will run the D that is consistant with the personell. Let's just hope he wouldn't think that means keeping Sutton.
Let's not hire a guy who has done nothing but coach dominating defenses his whole career because he is flamboyant. Good one.
I Remember he was a huge name a couple seasons ago for alot of headcoaching jobs for the job he did with that Merriman led Defense, He's still gonna be considered for some jobs this season but i think the result will be the same an he wont get any.
When a hot chick is having trouble with her boyfriend some men will assume the vulture position and lay the ground work for swooping in when the relationship dies. Everyone knows Norv will screw up and get fired sooner or later. Maybe Rivera wants to coach SD and is in the vulture position. I think a lot of people are secretly trying to vulture poor Norv, like Shanny and Cowher.
He seems to be giving himself a lot of credit for what his players are doing on the field. Rule #1 of life: Never assume that you are more important than you actually are.
I agree Rivera should be interviewed...I like coaches who have coaching experience and have earned some respect as players in the league.
I would like to see Rivera come in for an interview, but it really seems like how he conducts himself scares owners/GMs from giving this guy a shot. He was forced out of Chicago because of his lack of professionalism.
I agree, coaches shouldn't take credit for what his players have done. However, I do want a coach with fire and an aggressive winning philosophy. Do we really want another nice or quiet guy like Herm and Mangini? Give me someone whose going to get this team rallied and ready to kill.
