Love the movie and now I'm reading the book. I was never a big fan of Bill Walsh but Chapter Five was more or less about his accomplishments to the pro game. This chapter really opened my eyes to the differences a great coach can make. I highly recommend reading this book just for this chapter alone.
Yea that was a great chapter in a great book. Had nothing to do with Michael Oher or his story but still a great read.
LOVED the book, hated the movie. You were never a fan of Bill Walsh? Why, exactly? Championships just kind of piss you off?
I don't know how anyone could have hated the movie. No lie I've seen it like 7-8 times. I watch it every time someone hasn't seen it. I thought it was a fantastic movie.
Michael Lewis is a very good writer. His book Liar's Poker is a classic about the bond market. I have his book The Big Short will start it after I finish With the Old Breed (by E.B. Sledge).
Yeah, the part where Michael Oher blocked the gang members into submission was true drama. I hated the movie because I read the book. I'm especially sensitive to the "the book was better" snobs because I love movies, but this one was trash, pure and simple.
I thought it was interesting that Walsh considered Montana a system quarterback. It really isn't a surprise as he was the perfect QB for the west coast offense but it's funny how we use the system quarter back as a criticism for others and not for Montana.
The 49ers just beat down my favorite team back in the day. I did not like Joe Montana ... I thought he was waaaayyy over-rated (the book confirmed it too). Walsh's system could make any QB look better than he really was.
Lewis also wrote Moneyball, which was excellent. I read The Blind Side a couple of summers ago, and loved it. Fascinating analysis of the evolution of the left tackle in the game. I still haven't seen the movie, though.
