drafting a bowling ball with knives at #4 was brilliant, just that no one noticed those knives were the fake rubber knives used on movie sets.
Herm definetly deserves his share of the blame but Brien deserves all the dogging he has gotten since that day. Regardless of the horrible decision making that led to his kicks, Brien still missed two makeable FGs with a chance to send his team to the AGCCG. As for the topic, Gholston is a no brainer as far as I'm concerned. The guy has been the worst pick in Jets history up to this point of his career. That might change and hopefully it does but right now he was a huge mistake. The only other option as far as I'm concerned is Nugent, at least he was servicable though.
It's crazy to think that just 5 years ago things like the Doug Jolley trade were realities for this team. It's so nice to have Mr. T calling the shots now. The Jets went from the team that is always on the short end of the stick to the team that takes the stick and shoves it up the other teams ass.
We can consolidate this entire thread by saying the biggest mistake was hiring Bradway. He made dozens of errors in hindsight. The craziest thing is he was recomended for the job by Parcells and is still somehow employed by the organization. One underrated mistake by him was allowing Aaron Glenn to go to the Houston Texans in the expansion draft. We chased another good cover corner until Revis. I don't think people realize how good Glenn was at the time. He was a top 5-10 cover corner. If someone did that today, they'd be shot out of a cannon into the Hudson.
Bradway is actually pretty good in his current role. He was instrumental in convincing Tannenbaum to draft Shonn Greene last year, for instance. He was just a terrible GM.
This team has made so many bad moves in the 35 years I have been a fan that they all blend together. In regards to the Dslob/Gholston debate I see both sides of the argument but one point that needs to be mentioned that hasn't been is that although more was given up for Dslob (2picks), he actually played meaningful minutes while he was here. He was a starter as a rookie and had tackles in the 35-50 range in all his seasons (respectable for a postion not designed to make the tackles). But you cannot think of it has two picks for Dslob, you have to compare it for what it was a number 4 pick vs. a number 6 pick. In those terms, even though it may not have been a great number 4 pick there is no comparison to the utter lack of anything from a pick just to selections later. I was vehemently against the Gholston pick from way before the draft, I cannot say that about Dslob becuase in 2008 we knew we were picking 6 and I did not see it coming until it happened in 2003. Both are turds and both were very bad decisions, but VG in my opinion is worse because some (experts) believed Dewayne would be a great player, but most had Vernon pegged as a bust way before the draft. Personally - I think the worst move this team made in the last 10 years was Brett Favre, which was basically a waste of a whole season.
First, your telling me that at 8-3 you weren't at least enjoying the ride a bit? Second, without that epic collapse at the end of the season we don't hire Rex as the coach, draft Sanchez, or have anything close to the level of talent that we currently have on the roster. That year of Favre may not have worked out but without it this team is in a very different situation. Many want to look at that as a failed experiment, I look at it as the point where the Jets decided they were going to win a championship at any cost.
They weren't makable field goals. Brien didnt have a big leg at that point in is career he was money under 40 medicore 40-45 and not so good above 45. In that stadium even the best kickers where having trouble over 40. Brien had very little chance to make those kick I knew and herm should have know it.
Sorry, I remember it very vividly. It's like 9-11, some things you just end up with a very vivid memory of and never forget. I was freaking out screaming after the first knee - then he did it again and I nearly stroked out.
I firmly believe that without Favre (and with or without Chad), Mangini would have still screwed the pooch, we would have still gotten Rex and Sanchez - So I do not equate Favre for having anything to do with that. The response was part tongue in cheek because I hate that prick Favre, I know from a football standpoint it wasn't the worst move this team has made by far. But with draft pricks there is always an unknown, with that asshole we knew waht we were getting. An over the hill player that did not really want to be here and was using us, to get to his real goal to play in the NFC north to get his revenge on the Packers. But from my personal fandom point of view it was the worst because I could not root for that dickhead and actually stopped watching Jet games at the end of that season for the first time since 1996.
Lamont on the verge of becoming a top back? seriously? Lamont was givenn every opportunity elsewhere to become a top back and failed. he was a GOOD backup but was never going to be a star. Curtis 1995-2000 w/o Herm: averaged 335 carries per season Curtis 2001-2005 w/ Herm: averaged 302 carries per season How did Herm run him into the ground again? I do agree Lamont should have gotten more carries BUT Curtis was not run into the ground. That is definitely one of the worst plays of the last 20-30 years, we were in complete control of that game and that play turned the momentum in Bal's favor. Up until that point no one gave up 2 #1s for a WR, Snyder was dumb enough to do it. Them signing Coles(and a few of the other guys) actually wound up helping us. coles also never gave the Jets a chance to negotiate beofre he started whining. Ask him today if he thinks he made a mistake. The trade itself was a steal it was the exectuion that cost us. We liked Justin Miller and Nugent w/ our 1st pick, we traded down got more picks and still got those 2 and one of the picks we acquired we traded away to take Rhodes who was really good for us for a few years. The Aaron Glenn moved saved our franchise from cap hell. If Parcells didn't leave us in such a cap mess we wouldn't had to get rid of Glenn but we absolutely had to and that expansion drafted saved us and led to a division title in 2002- only our 2nd AFC East title EVER. On Aaron Glenn, I think he's one of the most overrated players in our history. he was a GOOD corner but he was never a shutdown corner and always got roasted by big time WRs. We have been one of the better franchises in the AFC since about 1997 that we haven't had too many awful moves but the worst were: -Parcells ruining our cap, giving Mo a huge deal and Cox a huge deal as he was leaving after 2000. -Signing Chrebet to a new deal in '01 or '02, that money should have gone to Coles. -The trade up for Robertson. he had one big year for us(2004) and was not good the rest of his time here. -The 2005 draft(many teams hate their '05 draft thiugh as it was terrible) -The Pete Kendall fiasco I would put Favre on this list as if we didn't trade for him we most likely win the division in 2008 BUT Favre killing us essentially brough us Rex and Sanchez so in the end we come out winners.
LaMont was pretty successful when healthy, he just couldn't stay healthy. Maybe he wasn't built to carry a load, or maybe he was just unlucky, but to say he failed without mentioning the injuries is unfair IMO. He had over 1500 all purpose yards and 11 TD's in his first season as a featured back in Oakland ... that was in 14 games.
And people call you disagreeable. That was a brutal call. You just don't play into Ed Reed's wheelhouse like that. Speaking of which, was he a consensus pick at the time that we passed up on for BT, like Brady over Sapp? Because what I remember of the criticism at the time, it was more that we'd just drafted Abraham the year before for the same position and there wouldn't be anywhere to play him. As for DRob, his knee was also messed up when he was drafted, and this was, or should've been known. Still and all, he was decent in the 4-3 defense at least. Mangini's scheme is what really killed him as a contributor.
