Free agent QB JaMarcus Russell no longer on Jets' radar after arrest » By Manish Mehta JaMarcus Russell effectively eliminated himself from becoming a Jet any time this millennium with his latest bonehead move. The free agent quarterback was arrested at his Alabama home today for possession of a controlled substance during a police investigation. The former Raiders signal caller was busted for codeine syrup, which can be mixed with soda to create “Purple Drank.” (Russell didn’t have a prescription for codeine). He posted $2,500 bail and is due in court on July 20. The Jets recently made an exploratory call to Russell’s agent after the former No. 1 overall pick was released by the Raiders. However, a league source told me last week that the chances of Russell signing with the Jets were less than 10 percent. Not surprisingly, the Jets are no longer interested in the career underachiever, according to a source. Russell, the poster boy for draft busts, won only seven of his 25 career starts with a career passer rating of 65.2. He was paid $36.4 million in his first three seasons. I don't know, that's some weak cheese out of Mehta. Tomorrow's headline: Curtis Martin stays retired.
Yes he should have, good teams explore all possibilities when looking for talent. It deosn't mean we should have signed him but i am glad we looked at him. The man obviously has talent, there are a million examples of players that didn't work out w/ their original team then went somewhere else and got it. Again, I am not saying we should have signed him but it's wise to check on it like we did.
ok...I've been out of college and off drugs for 8 years but..."purple drank"...are you fucking kidding me? Whatever happened to joints, a gram, and a 6 pack? "Forget Sunny D...I want that purple stuff..."
There's some kids with some talent at the local pop warner club... maybe Tanny should fly in and check em out.
That's a good place to start, you can't teach that. Why wouldn't a team take a shot w/ a low sost signing like that? There would be no risk to signing him for a team like Bucs or Bills w/ unsettled QB situations. If he takes his 2nd chance seriously, gets into shape and takes instruction he could become a success. if not you cut him w/ no cap penalty.
It's a shame hes getting high on painkillers, and all..... but this is some what of a blessing now he got arrested(so the jets have absolutely 0 interest)
We don't need anymore depth at QB, and JaM does not offer anything in the leadership or mentor roles so he's so unnecessary. I am glad that we considered him at least for a moment, because he DOES have at least some potential. Shame to see it wasted.
Depth wise we are good but at some point we will have to get a QB that can play. Right now we have bodies and even w/ brunell we'll have just a body(he should help Sanchez which is why I am in favor of bringing him in) but if Mark goes down early in the year we'd be in trouble w/ what we have.
This is what puzzles me about the backup QB position on general. It is a odd position to have to fill. You're pretty much telling a guy you are useless to us unless our real QB gets injured, but please join our team. I just can't imagine too many guys settling for that role if they have that much talent. Once they are in that role it seems damn hard to get out of it. I still think of what we do have Ainge would give us the best shot to win, if GOD forbid, Sanchez went down.
Older guys who lose starting spots or aren't getting a new starter's contract like Pennington or guys who are actual competition for the starters tend to end up being good backups (aside from young prospects like Ainge.) Clemens doesn't really fit any the roles a backup has.
