Brian Cox is our new "Assistant Defensive Line Coach". Richie Anderson is our new "Assistant Wide Recievers Coach". I'm slightly confused B.Cox was a linebacker when he played and Richie Anderson was a back. I understand Richie Anderson had real good hands coming out of the backfield (I think one year he even lead the team in receptions), but was obviously never a real route runner. Can someone please explain....

because we're into the trend of hiring people who have no experience at their given position

Anderson could perhaps be helping them learn the finer points of blocking and taking hits.

Cox giving insight on busting the line and using your hands and mouth to its full advantage.

Because maybe getting them to coach a position that isn't their own allows them to focus more on what they should be teaching rather than passing on what they remember from playing there, which could be technically flawed?

    This may be bullshit.

I can't think of a reason for Cox but for Anderson is easy. Anderson was a pass recieving FB. Yes he blocked well but he was known for getting out of the backfield and catching 70-90 receptions a season. He knows how to break tackles and get down the field and he knows how to hang on to the football while doing so.

They're both also assistants to positions that they are both familiar too.

I miss Brian on Fox Sports AM. He was always laughing and telling it straight.

bryan cox was a linebacker and linebackers have to watch their defensive linemen's every move so they can clog any holes the o-line tries to make. Therefore, he has observed the work of defensive linemen and understands what it takes for them to be successful.

we are going to a 3-4 alignment! COX has played it and knows it! Richie was a great receiver out of the backfield! BOTH know FOOTBALL!

My assumption is that the Jets are worried about the defensive line and wide receivers and brought in a couple of tough ex-players to help out.

Cox was a linebacker with the mindset of a defensive tackle when he played and Anderson was consistently one of the top receiving fullbacks so I don't think the assignments are all that much of a stretch.

That said it's going to be awhile before we know how on target Tannenbaum and Mangini have been in their first offseason. Looks promising but you can't tell till the pads hit each other in August.

Exactly right. If we're going to a 3-4, the most important thing is to make sure that the Linebackers are free to run around and make plays, that requires a solid DL. Cox knows what the LB's need based from the line, so he makes sure they do it.

especially for you young folk out there....

the nfl is a buddy buddy system - especially when it involves ex players who want to stay involved......

not that dissimilar from your basic fortune 500 company that has its own buddy buddy system among the high ranking execs....

bottom line - be respectful, stay in touch with you college buddies and become an expert at whatever you decide to do in life.
