Looking at the numbers on NYJetsCap (where does he get his infos!?) Sanchez base salary is: 2011 -> 13.5 (16.5 cap hit) 2012 -> 8.5 (14.3 cap hit) 2013 -> 4 (8 cap hit) A good idea would be to ink Sanchez to 2/3 extra years, give him some more bonus this off-season to spread over the course of the new contract and even out his cap numbers to around 12 mill for 2011, 2012 and 2013 and then going up to like 14 in 2014 & 2015. Why would he do it? 1. Because he would get money upfront which would be spread over the length of his contract. 2. To help the team... we'd be doing this to re-sign Edwards & Holmes... his short term success is dependent on these two contracts...
This is all a moot point without knowing the new labor situation but I'll play along. The cap in 2009 was 124 million after a 4 million dollar increase. Let's say for the sake of argument, the cap comes back in 2011 and is raised by another 6 million dollars. Now if nycap's figures are correct (they have been in the past) that leaves the Jets with 20 million to play with when attempting to re-sign Cro, Harris, Braylon, Santonio and Smith. Doesn't seem like enough, but then take into account that by having Brunell or Taylor retire or be released (which I assume is going to happen) as well as having Jenkins either massively restructure his contract or also be let go, the team will be saving around 6.5-7 million. 27 will be enough to give Tanny the flexibility to pick and choose who he wants to come back or let go. This team won't be active in free agency. Reliance on Sanchez growing and the draft is going to be the hope this team needs to pin itself on because it's going to be impossible to find outside help and keep everyone. Again though, we're all really talking out of our ass when it comes to this because of the cloudy labor situation. Besides, there's a playoff game Saturday. As of right now, who gives a shit.
We got him for three more years, lets see him be successful in the regular season a full season before worrying about adding on years to what may prove to be a dud.
Sanchez is not a dud, he's already proven that at the very least he's a solid game manager. He's gonna be the Jets starting QB for the next several years They need to entertain a myriad of options to clear up even marginal amounts of cap space because with the Cro trade being a 2nd rounder, it's almost a certainty we need to sign him to a contract as well as Harris and Edwards and/or Holmes. So yes, if they can re-work Sanchez' contract they should.
Statistically he is a huge dud. Thanks to an above avg defense, running game and the fact he is in his second year its over looked or excused. 54% 75 rating is a huge dud for a supposedly franchise QB. If this was Clemens the past 2 years everyone would be calling for his job.
The contract was probably structured to be reworked after the first two years. Those cap hits are insane. Jason does a great job with that website. I'm sure his information isn't 100% accurate but it's as close as your going to find without being in the Jets front office.
Kellen is older, Sanchez has a much higher ceiling and played some incredible games this year. Any Jet fan knows that. Over a 4 week period Sanchez led the league in yards and led us to 3 comeback wins in a row. Where does that show up on your "final" stats? He started off throwing 8 TDs to 0 INTs against divisional opponents. We all knew he'd hit some bumps this year but he is much improved from last year. Pick out pretty much any elite QB and their stats are about the same. I just picked John Elway and in his sophomore year he had a 56.3% completion percentage, 18 Tds to 15 INTs, 76.8 QB rating, and threw for 2,598 yards. Sanchez had a 54.8% completion percentage, 17 TDs to 13 INTs, 75.3 QB rating, and threw for 3,291 yards. How'd Elway turnout?
if schotty keeps calling games like he did the past few weeks sanchez could easily have a 63% completions, 3700 yards, 25 TDs and like 12 picks. Can't blame sanchez for poor play calling. The biggest thing i like about him is his ability to hit WRs in stride so they can get YAC. i know holmes broke off big on some slants but a lot QBs woulda took a safe low throw causing the WR to stop and get tackled. sanchez puts it where the WR can make a play on it
I'd like to add that the 2010 cap was $129 million. Speculating that the cap is moving up $4 to $5 million each year, we can add a little padding for the 18 game schedule as well. I think your call on the $6 mill increase for 2011 is spot on, just tack the 6 onto the $129 for a total of $135 million. That might be a bit more accurate for a final number.
nobody would give a fuck if clemens won the game though. i could give a fuck if he doesnt have pretty stats right now. i do care about is his comebacks, and what i see. not the %.
Mark may not have come out gang busters but he has shown streaks of brilliance throughout the first two years. He wins games and made the playoffs in both years, I consider him a franchise quarterback. Next season will be my first official barometer on how good he is as a quarterback. To this point, he has been inconsistent: great at times, horrible at others. Still too soon to tell, but when all is said and done I'm confident in saying he will be a top 5-10 qb in the NFL. I'm all for reworking his contract if it benefits the cap situation. Jets will struggle in resigning a lot of these expiring contracts.
