There's just no way to justify it. He's the only guy on that list to never win a championship, and he's number seven. How about Brett Favre, Roger Staubach or Steve Young? Or, if they wanted a token non-championship quarterback on the list, I'd choose Fran Tarkenton, who took his team to three. Marino's got just the one. It's a banana-headed list as long as that flaw remains.
Marion should not be on the list i would much rather see Young on the list than him, and Staubach is also one of the clutch guys... who knows... but Marino has the stats so he squeezes in....
IMO, I think it is also very difficult to evaluate players from different era's against eachother. In that list I would put Elway over Unitas.
Put the Raider hating aside for a minute, Stabler HAS to be on this list!!! Marino doesn't belong. And Aikman is great but how can you be "clutch" when you almost never HAD to lead a 4th quarter comeback?!? Those Cowboy teams jumped on everyone by halftime and suffocated them in the second half!
That's not unreasonable. And, with the only bone I'll ever throw you NJ, even Plunkett deserves to be on that list before Marino.
Aikman should be in there. I think Elway is way too high. He does have those drives against Cleveland but also lost 3 SB's before he won one.
Not unreasonable. You can point to the Sea of Hands game, the Holy Roller, and his 30-yard touchdown run with 1:13 remaining at Pittsburgh in the 1972 playoff game. Of course, we know what happened with 5 seconds left. Then again, he was most certainly not clutch when he threw an INT in the final moments against the Rams in the last game of the 1983 season. The Saints lost 26-24. Had they won they would have made the playoffs.
He wasn't in position to be clutch in the first three SBs because his teams were getting killed. In addition to the '86 and '87 AFC Championship Games against Cleveland, he had a big comeback win against the Oilers in the 1991 playoffs. He also led the Broncos to comeback wins on the road against the Chiefs and Steelers in 1997. He belongs where he's at on the list.
Don't forget the Ghost to the Post and the TD run against New England in the '76 playoffs, among others. He was an old man in that Saint game! And I think that was the first year they even went 8-8...
I concur that Staubach belongs on that list...he was clutch! How can Marino be on there instead when he never won the Super Bowl? I also agree Elway is up there too high based on his last two seasons and forgetting his lost Super Bowls. He should flip flop with Bradshaw. Stabler belongs too - captain comeback.
