I don't understand where the idea that Tanny can't admit to making a mistake comes from. I see it a lot on here.
You're a smart feller, I'm sure you don't expect him to do that. Does cutting draft picks count? Gholston (1st round), Clemens (2nd round), Schlegel (3rd round) and several later picks have been cut by Tanny. What about letting Sheppard walk after giving up a 3rd for him? What about trading Mason for nothing mid-season? Actions speak louder than words.
Rob Turner Dude, I've met the guy, I can assure he is huge! I hope they bring him back. Had we had him when Mangold went down this year we'd be in the playoffs...possibly
Gholston was let go after it was clear to the whole world he was a bust. I hardly count that as manning up and admitting a mistake. He had gone three years without a sack and showed NO improvement at any point. Clemens was not cut. He was resigned in his fifth year to a one year contract, and signed with the Redskins in the next off season. Clemens was with the team five years. I would call that duration of time more a case of saying a player didn't fit than that he was a bad draft pick who the GM owned up to making. Ftr I personally think Clemens was mishandled by the CS, and do not blame Tanny for picking him. Schlegel. He made his way through his second camp and pre-season before being cut in a roster move. This I will give you, although Schegel never showed anything at any point. Anyone would have cut him. Sheppard was signed for a fifth round pick and a conditional, not a third. He left after one year. Mason basically talked himself off the team by criticizing Sanchez and the CS. That is a case of a player's dissing the team being a bigger factor than admitting a mistake. But the larger point is none of those cases are comparable to what I was talking about. Imo the Jets wanted Burress last season because it was part of the whole competition with the Giants. Perhaps the original plan was, if they could pull it off, to let Cotch go, keep Edwards with Holmes, and add Burress. The later Mason signing was a fall back after negotiations with Edwards broke down. And I am not saying that Edwards's demands initially were too high. But the move to Burress did not work out, and the Jets obviously would have been better off keeping Edwards even if it meant not getting Burress. I admit I don't know if Edwards would have signed to a more reasonable offer if the Jets made it, but I have heard nothing to suggest that the Jets made a reasonable offer to Edwards. They were banking on getting Burress. It was a mistake. Ftr I don't mean to suggest that Edwards is the only option that fits. As I said earlier I dont know what his medical condition is. Perhaps someone like Garcon makes equal sense. But I don't agree with you that Tanny has been stand up about admitting his mistakes.
He was the 6th overall pick in the '08 draft. Did you expect Tanny to cut him in 2009? You need to give that type of investment time to work out. If cutting him after 3 seasons isn't the action of someone admitting a mistake, then what would be? I was pretty liberal with the word cut in my post - my mistake. I'll give you that they held onto Clemens for a while, probably hoping he'd stick as a backup towards the end. But let's look at it from another angle. Was trading up to get Sanchez 3 years after taking Clemens in the 2nd not an admission of a mistake? He was a hell of a boar hunter though. Yea - my bad, not sure where I found 3rd from but it was a quick google search. Turns out it ended up as an '09 5th and a '10 4th. You don't just throw those things away. Did he? I think Mason has made comments to the contrary after the season ended. I'm curious as to what types of things you or others would expect Tanny to do to consider it him admitting a mistake?
