If Spencer gets franchised then Johnson would be about all that's left for OLB. He's a good player and Rex love's him but he won't give a lot of pass rush. Excellent leader. We could do alot worse, for sure.

I'd rather the Jets find some pass rushing help in the draft.

I've been saying for a little bit now that he'd be a really good stop gap. He won't be overly expensive and could fill the gap vacated by Bryan Thomas prior to the draft so we're not forced to go OLB. So long as the pricetag is reasonable I'd probably pull the trigger.

By no means would he be a long term replacement or a reason not to take an OLB, I'd just feel a lot more comfortable with him in the fold instead of relying on what we currently have and the draft.

^ yep, I was saying it for a while in the big FA thread.

This guy was ranked the #1 olb for stopping the rush, and dead last for his ability to pass rush.

Hes an excellent fit to rotate with Maybin

However I think the Ravens have shown a greater interest in resigning him lately, but if they don't then we gotsa sign this beast

It'd be good if the Jets got him for that Bryan Thomas role. It'd definitely shore up the edge of the defense some. However, I still think they should look at pass rush in the draft. This would probably stop the Jets from reaching for Upshaw as well, who seems more of a Bryan Thomas pick than anything at this stage, unless his pro day shows something more.

Signing him certainly wouldn't stop us from going OLB in the draft.

Pace is old, JJ is old.

Having a young guy to rotate in based on his strengths/weaknesses is a wise way to keep everyone healthy while getting the youngin ready for his future

Spencer? You mean Anthony Spencer from Dallas? He is totally overrated. I didn't even consider him an option.

If he comes at a good price he will be a very good run defender for us, hes very underrated in that department. He's certainly a possibility for this team.

this would be fine so long as we dont pull a Scott and sign the guy for way longer than he is likely to be productive for.

We need a pass rush. We need help at receiver. We need help at safety. We need help at running back. We need offensive line depth. We need inside linebacker depth. We're going to go into the season with one pass rusher next year(Pace) who will be 32 mid-way through the season, and then Maybin who for arguments sake had a fluke season, and you want to sign JJ who will probably command a decent amount of coin on the FA market for a team like ours who is already close to the cap?

I am very glad you aren't our GM, then again, you probably wouldn't do much worse than our current one.

I think Tanny is a good GM. The Jets aren't in bad shape, they have a few areas that need work. I agree that bringing in this guy is like bringing in another Pace or Thomas. I hope they target all the areas you mentioned, minus rb.

We need a passrusher. Calvin Pace is our Jarret Johnson.

He never stated he would provide pass rush. Jarrett Johnson would be our Bryan Thomas, hed be a very effective run stopper (2nd by OLB in the league at doing so) and could give Pace some rest in games. Dont forget our run stopping was sub par last season. I also dont think hed command big coin at all, Hes 30 not 25. I think he will get most likely around 3 million per year. Thats a bargin if we need someone to fill a Bryan Thomas run stopper type role. I doubt we make a big splash in FA besides our own players, so adding someone like Johnson isnt a bad idea by any strecth.

All depends on the price. For the right price, he's a Bryan Thomas replacement and platoon guy with Aaron Maybin. He could also maybe provide a new voice in the defensive locker room, with or without Scott there.

He's not a #1 priority by any stretch, but he's definitely worth looking at.

I get tired of all this crap about all the Jet's needs. Sure they have needs, who doesn't. NE's a mess on defense, has no outside receivers. Pitt, oldest defense in the league, no O-line, Giants, OL problems, poor cornerback play, GB have you seen that defense. The Jet's were 5th in defense. Tannenbaum and Rex know how to build a team. Remembber this team was 8-8 not 4-12.

The whole point of talk leading into free agency and the draft is about filling our needs. If you don't want to read about it, you may want to take a 3 motnh break from the forums. Its not like we are going to sit around discussing old games when we have new players to look forward to.

I wouldn't mind to see us bring in Jarret Johnson. The Jets were interested in him years ago when he first became a FA. I could definitely see Rex pushing to get him.

I don't think people really understand, we don't need a "b. thomas" or "pace". That's the point, we HAD both and they both sucked at rushing the passer. Since Thomas is most likely gone, we need Pace and a PASS RUSHER, not someone who is a BT clone (stopgap). We need better than BT, we had him already and our p-rush was rubbish. This will also help alleviate some of our Safety problems.

He is worth a look as a stop gap. He could certainly help us in run support, and he's scheme versatile. He was never a star, but he'd be more than competent as a situational player.

If we lose BT it would be nice to have a great OLB at stopping the run who can alternate with Maybin. Its not going to stop us from drafting LBs.
