Dolphins don't want to keep paying this type of money for him. He was drafted #1 overall in the "old" contract structure.... so it's hurting the Phins and they are reported to be taking a Left Tackle in the upcoming draft.

    Let the fighting begin.

Good move by the Dolphins. Assuming they get a decent LT in the draft.

Edit: thought about it again and I guess it's dependent on whether it costs them a play-making WR, RB or TE. The Dolphins are short on playmakers for Ryan Tannehill right now and he'll bust in a hurry if Reggie Bush goes and they don't give him more talent to work with. Letting Long go puts pressure on the Fins to take a LT up high. They probably should use that pick to help Tannehill out in other ways and retain Long if possible.

If Regis had gone with Matt Moore as his starter instead of impulsively starting Tannehill the Phins might be playing this weekend as a Wildcard.

Fortunately this gives the Jets a chance to.sign Moore and fix the QB mess for 2013 and maybe beyond

    Source?

And also I have wanted to let him walk for some time now. It will obviously hurt. Hopefully we can move Martin to LT and draft a RT

There is no sense paying Long the money he will want when he can't stay healthy and hasn't even played like a top 5 LT

It wasn't impulsive. It was realizing that, sure, we could have gone a little further with Moore this year but long term he wasn't leading us to a SB. Plus he beat Matt Moore in camp

not what I saw on Hard Knocks

Regis had his mind up to go with his rookie from day one. And based on the second Jet game, had Moore not come in to save the Phins from a sweep when Tannehill got nicked, it would have been an even more regretful decision for Miami

Could he potentially play RT instead? Salary cap issues notwithstanding...

If he can play RT and we had cap room that'd be badass but I don't think either or those things will be.
