Gladly.. You saw the Jets win a SB.. That is something most of us on this board can't say.. You witnessed one of the most memorable seasons in NFL history.. That euphoria has to last at least 5 years, so that means you didn't start suffering again until 1973 the earliest.. Which would be about the time a 40 year old became a Jets fan.. I'll say it is the worst for the 35 -40 year old Jets fans who have suffered for nearly as long WITHOUT seeing the Jets win a SB.. I would just fall out of that range, which makes it pretty damn shitty for me as well. It sucks for all Jets fans(except the ones who became a Jets fan over the last 8 years or so, they don't know what suffering is) but I know I would feel a hell of alot better if I had seen the Jets win ONE SB..
Just a thought, Champ - did you follow football before the Jets came along and, if so, which team did you support?
If I had the choice of seeing the one SB and then becoming a miserable, scowling disbeliever in all things NYJ's for 30+ years, or being on the outside looking in but hopelessly optimistic that someday our ticket would get punched...hmmmm...
Yes I followed FB ONLY after the Brooklyn Dodgers left NYC in 57. Until then FB did not exist for me as the BDs were my sports excitement. So when they left I decided no more BB for me so I moved from BB to FB & since at that time there was only 1 FB in town the NYGs I rooted for them. When the Titans/Jets moved to Shea I secured season tix & have now been a extremely passionate fan of the NYJs since then
No it was NOT a NFL season at that time the NYJs played in the AFL so you are totally incorrect in that statement. Also you math needs inmproving I think a bit since it is 37 years since the last time we won SB & I really doubt that a 3/4 year old would be a fan yet. I know I took my son to his 1st game at 7 he is now 35 so he been suffering for 28 years while Winny, myself & a few others who are older have been suffering 37 years. You can beliive what U like but sorry to say IMHO you are way, way off track. Just because we saw them win a SB dooes not mean we have suffered any less when the crapola FB began in 1970
Actually my math wasn't off, I was actually giving you the benefit of the doubt.. You didn't start suffering the year after the Jets won a SB that has to last at least 54 years which brings you to 1973.. Which would make a 40 year old today 8 at the time.. I became a Jets fan at 8 so thats the # I used. Listen who cares, my point was I know I would feel alot better about being a Jets fan if I saw them win a SB and I'm sure many others feel the same..You don't count anyway because you just enjoy being miserable.. So I will ask any other "old timers" out there. Can you guys understand my point?
Give me a break Champ.. Again I was not incorrect in my statement because the NFL became the NFL in large part because of that season. So while at the time it was the AFL it was still one of the most memorable seasons in NFL history..
This is the second time I have seen you describe the game as such. I don't quite follow. Edit: I know PO stands for playoff. I just don't get the "trumped up" bit.
Whatever floats your boat. The records say differently though the AFL entry the NYJs beat the NFL entry the Baltimore Colts. That means at the time there were 2 leagues & again at that time the NYJs were in the AFL not the NFL. It is amazing how you are attempting to change history to defend your position instead of saying you were incorrect in your theroy.
I am an oldie and can say that THAT SB win was the most exciting sports event that had happened to me...that includes meeting Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris/shaking Rod Lavers hand. I can't tell you how hard the following years have been. The win actually created a situation where dashed dreams hurt harder. And while I sympathize with those who haven't yet had the opportunity to enjoy being #1 in football, trust me...we all suffer equally.
Well, I don't. I already know what happened. Prior to the 1969 season the AFL decided to go to a playoff system whereby the 2nd place finishers in each division would qualify for the postseason (2nd place Western Division team would play 1st place Eastern Division team and vice versa). The league did this in part for money and to make sure the teams didn't have a bye week while the NFL played its conference championship. (The NFL had four divisions in 1969 and hence, four playoff teams.) In the Eastern Division the Jets went 10-4 and the Oilers went 6-6-2. In the Western Division the Raiders went 12-1-1 and the Chiefs went 11-3. Under 1968 rules, the Jets and Raiders would have met in the AFL title game. The Oilers and Chiefs would have gone fishing. But this was not 1968 anymore. The Chiefs beat the Jets 13-6 and the Raiders beat the Oilers 56-7. The Chiefs then beat the Raiders 17-7. I just don't get the "trumped up" part. The four-team playoff system was announced prior to the season. "Trumped up" refers to something that is fraudulent. It's not like the league announced the new playoff system in early December. "Wow, look at this. The Chiefs are hot. Let's get them in the playoffs." No, again the change was announced prior to the season. There was nothing fraudulent about the 1969 AFL playoffs. I suppose you have a problem with the 2006 Steelers making the playoffs because at one time there were fewer than six teams in a conference making the playoffs. By the way, must you be difficult with everyone? Can you ever answer a question in decent fashion? Was it really that difficult to answer my original question instead of basically insulting my intelligence and telling me to dig into a book?
Well it depends how you look at it. Because there was no #2 vs #1 in the prior year NBC congered up the format to give themself xtra games after the NYJs won SB3 & give the AFL teams more $$$$$ thus it was a trumped up game just for TV. If you knew the answer why did you ask the question in the 1st place?
Well here, hear on what your posted. Terrific! BTW I still get POed when the Colts recover the on sides kick in the 4th qtr of SB3. How about you?
Believe me, I'm not trying to minimize any Jets fans suffering. You're right, we all do suffer equally now. But being that you have witnessed the most exciting sports event that has ever happened to you has to count for something. Alot of us(me) hasn't had that kind of sports excitement and have suffered for nearly as long. Hopefully the suffering ends for us all soon..
I am fully aware that the Jets were the AFl entry the year they won it all. But it is common knowledge that Jets team was very influential for the NFL becoming the NFL as we know it now.. Therefore m,aking it one of the most important seasons in NFL history..
