I was thinking last night about how excited I am to watch Mangold and D'Brick develop, when I started thinking about about the game Sunday, and how even though Tennessee is not going to be great, they have nothing to worry about at Centre, especially against us. So I was why we released him, if it was ever mentioned I either forget or never heard. Was it a money thing? If it was, then I can understand it. Why keep around one guy that will be gone soon if the money being spent on him can be used for multiple guys that can potentially turn into stars and will stick around for a while? But if it was because of his age or his injury, and not because of money, then I think, right now, that it was a bad idea. Mangold would have only benefitted from Mawae's presence, as would have Ferguson. Kevin, right now, is better than Mangold, therefore his position on the line would be stronger for us, which is good for Chad, who really needs to get confidence back. Having Kevin Mawae here this season would have brought nothing but positives to this team. If he was cut because of salary issues, I can understand it. And, if he wasnlt even asked to renegotiate, I will take it as meaning he simply wasn;t wanted, which is something I just cannot understand.
I think we've heard that he was not the best of a locker room presence, or at least that the new regime thought he wouldn't have been...something like that
From Randy Lange's column today: http://www.bergenrecord.com/page.ph...lRUV5eTY5ODg5NDImeXJpcnk3ZjcxN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXk2 Several reasons for the split have been speculated. Some say it was nothing more than Mawae being a 35-year-old center coming off a season-ending triceps tendon tear. There was a salary-cap savings, although not a large one, in his release. And because he has been an outspoken NFLPA player rep, one thought is that Mangini, who knew he was going to coach these Jets hard, didn't need a player four days younger than him raising points of practice order as he sometimes did with Herm Edwards.
His cap number wasn't that high. This was one of the few moves I wasn't on board with. I don't doubt that he is a locker room lawyer type, but if Parcells, Groh, and Herm can handle him, then I don't think Mangini is justified in cutting him as soon as he gets here. I don't think it's a huge deal, we aren't winning this year and he was going to be on the way out in the coming years anyway, so for that reason I could see cutting him, but I don't like that they did it for the reason that's been rumored.
We all liked Mawae...He was the Parcells answer to Ted Washington, I believe. He more than delivered for his tenure here. I too was not happy to see our stability go at that most crucial position, especially with the Chad and Sad-Sack potential. Kids!...breaking em in...at risk of injury....truth be told...this is the year to do this. Clean break...and as observed...Mawae was future pain in the lockerroom. Here's to a win Sunday with the help of the new kids on the block, Brick and Nick.
Why did Jets' get rid of Mawae....Cause he's finished, overated & has a big mouth. But besides that....Who would you want Mawae or Manigold ? I pick Manigold....he's alot younger & Mawae is about 35yrs old ?
Mawae did a great job for the Jets while he was here. I'll always think of him as a Jet. However, rumor has it he was one of the two OL who spoke about Chad to the media (wiuth Fabini being the other). It was a divisive comment, and the staff did the right thing is sending him on his way. Besides, he hasn't got more then a year or two left, and the Jets window won't be opening for at a least a couple more years. It was best to move on.
With you there Tony. My lasting memory of him was playing with that club on his hand at Miami I think.
I thought that this discussion had been beaten to death already. How about we merge it with the Coles is a malcontent thread and set the title as "Don't bother reading if your a fan of the NY Jets"
Thats stupid, just because he was an outspoken player means NOTHING! Did he pull anything that say TO or Koren Robinson have done in the past? Hes been a team guy and a solid player. I remember everyone on this message board saying Mawae could play till hes 40, and now hes finished when he leaves the team. Im rooting for D-Rob to beat Kevin Mawae in the trenches, but out of all the matchups D-Rob is likely to get owned by Mawae. Mangolds good but we couldve filled another hole and not have to worry about the other glaring holes in this team later.
He was the only guy to not restructure his contract. Wonder if he would have been here if he did restructure.
What?? Really? I thought he was a pure character guy......man that's the last thing I thought would have been an issue with him. I wonder what kind of stuff it was that he did and they didn't like....
we cut mawae b/c he is a dick he is the kind of guy you like only when he is on your side i believe he immediately came out and said he wouldn't even consider a pay cut...and then had conflicts w/ the staff(as stated/speculated) and it is not like he went to a winner.....he went to the money and has had nothing but bad things to say about the jets since not going to miss mawae that much...more worried about who he will try to hurt in week 1
