Then why draft a QB at all this year? They could have just focused on the OLine. If Clemens indeed is the "goods", we'll find out soon enough right? I still don't think Mangini wanted to truly "challenge" Chad in TC. That's why Ramsay was bought in. If Ramsay couldn't cut it in DC, there was no way in hell he was gonna beat out Chad in NY. Bollinger already proved himself a capable backup at best. Again, Clemens was never really in the mix..
I just don't see it CMAN. I think these guys are willing to do anything to win and win now. I think X may be right they looked at tape of Ramsey and they thought he had as much talent as Leinart or Cutler and he came in and really was bad and scared them? They may have really been in love with D'Brick and thought he was far and away the best player available and didn't want to trade out? I think your jumping to conclussions on this. Personally I wasn't a fan of Leinart and would have been very happy dropping a couple of spots and taking Cutler and getting another pick but if you love D'Brick hard to argue with what they did.
He's taller than Drew Brees and Michael Vick, but not much. He doesn't seem to have a history of getting passes batted down, and he stands tall, but we'll see. I figured they ignored it because of his mobility, but he didn't seem overly mobile in preseason. Personally, I wasn't in love with any qb's this year, and I didn't see the need, with Pennington, Ramsey, and Bollinger already on roster. We may have been better served picking elsewhere, particularly with Stanton, Smith, Quinn, and Brohm likely to be available this season. -X-
I'm sorry, but that seems to conspiracy theoryish to me. If the Jets have a rebuilding plan for the offensive line that they expect to come to fruition in two or three seasons, then drafting Clemens now was the right thing to do because two/three years on the bench is generally an ideal amount of time for them to develop before they get thrown into the fire. Even with drafting Ferguson and Mangold the Jets still need to upgrade all three of their other OL spots, Clement and Moore are marginal and Kendall is only getting older. Clemens has first round pick potential (not as much as those drafted before him obviously) and has a chance to be good... if he's given a decent offensive line to play behind when we finally put him out there, then he will be in a position to succeed, something many other QBs did not have the luxury of having.
Good line, mediocre QB- team can win mediocre line, good QB- team can maybe win bad line, great QB- team cannot win great line, poor QB- team can maybe win In other words, I believe the Jets made the correct decision to draft two linemen in the first round. Remember, the other teams that did so played in Super Bowls with those lineman.
If Mangini wants to win now, he shouldnt have changed the Defensive scheme and just focused on bringing in star offensive players, because IMO the Jets' defense is solid enough already to win games and to get to playoff games obivously requires a better offense from this team
We're gonna have to disagree on this one WB. They know full well they're not gonna "Win now" with the rebuilding job in front of them. If they looked at Ramsay's tape and thought he was better than Cutler and Leinart, then they obviously saw some things that got missed in DC completely. Who knows what happened with both kids when they auditioned for the Jets. Bad day perhaps? Either way, we have Clemens now for better or worse and not Cutler. I just hope its not us passing on a potential "Marino" again..
Keep in mind Edge that this CS operates entirely on "secrecy" and as such, conspiracy theories may not be wild speculations at all. Don't get me wrong here. I want Clemens to succeed. I want ANY Jets QB to succeed for that matter. If the focus was rebuilding the OLine, they should have stayed with that. If Mangini wanted "his" type of guys, I just wonder what exactly does that mean? Guys that are simply "good" but not "spectacular"? Who knows....
I agree the Jets made the correct decision however, I don't feel they went far enough. They could have focused entirely on the OLine especially since they already had a pretty good idea how far along Chad was in his rehab.
I think they had to challenge Chad and see who is going to play when he goes down. I hope he doesnt, BUT he always has. They brought in Ramsey b/c they thought with his arm and durability he could be the guy, they are hoping that Clemens will be the guy, and Chad is the guy for now, but they have to be prepared for Chad getting hurt. I really like what was done day one of this draft. The trenches are key to winning and we have a potential QB who doesnt have the 1st round tag pressure on him to perform or be a bust. I liked Cutler pre draft as well, but I would have been pissed if we took Leinart, I just dont like him, attitude, skill set, toughness, leadership, he just always rubbed me the wrong way. If Mangini didnt want to challenge Chad, then Brad Smith would not be getting any snaps, and listed as a WR/QB on the charts, and we would have kept Bolly, b/c he is the only one on the roster who doesnt challenge Chad. I like Chad a lot, nice guy, great leader, great attitude, but he has to show me a complete season before I put all my faith in him, and I would expect a new coach to feel the same way. Mangini is all about competition at every position.
I disagree with your thought on sticking with o-line in the draft. It rarely ever does teams any good to load up at one position and leave the rest dangling. Even though we already had two first round pick QBs on the team, I don't want to entrust the future of the Jets to Chad's shoulder and Ramsey's lack of success. Jet fans are harsh... REALLY harsh... hell, there are people already calling for Mangini's head and we haven't even seen a regular season game yet... if the Jets aren't making a Super Bowl push by Mangini's third year he will be crucified and burned at the stake. That is why they needed to bring in a young QB now to begin developing for down the road. Mangini and Tanny managed to get that QB AND get the best two offensive linemen in the draft. Going back to your original thought about Mangini not wanting to start Leinart or Cutler, I seriously doubt that was the Jets train of thought, but you know what... it's actually a really good point. What good does it do the Jets to start a rookie QB on this team right here right now? We got the two best rookie offensive linemen in the draft and have a solid foundation, and a young QB with great potential who could be our franchise two or three years down the road.
We don't have great personal for the 4/3 and haven't since 04 when we let Ferguson go and now Abe. Let's wait and see what happens on D. I think Thomas is going to be far better starting as a pass rusher in the 3/4 than he would have been on the line? I thought our D played better during the pre-season than any time under Herm. Vilma was unprotected last year in our 4/3and teams ran all over us. He was making a ton of tackles unfortunately they were 4 and 5 yards past the line of scrimage. I think our D is going to be every bit as good as it was in 04 when we had both Abe and Ferguson.
Thanks Rambo I wouldn't say its 100% just yet, that's still to be determined, but its not lookin good  I say not lookin good in terms of the Jets possibly whiffing on a franchise QB in the making, but its lookin real good for the Denver Broncos
I'll wait and see. I think he's in a good spot, falling in with Shanahan, who has done wonders for Plummer, but I have a bad feeling about him forcing a lot of bad passes. -X-
Just for the record, Vision ... in the interest of fairness ... I was touting Jay Cutler as a TOP 10 Pick when every reputable draft site on the net still had him tabbed as a 2nd RD Pick ... about 4 Games into the 2005 college season ... and we {draftdaddy} were the first {that I am aware of} to place Jay Cutler in the TOP 10 Overall, and when we did that we ranked him the #1 QB in the draft, ahead of Leinart and Young, and we never changed that ranking That doesn't mean we were right about the QB rankings ... TBD ... but we were way ahead of the curve on Cutler's true draft value, and right now its lookin good ... not 100%, but he's lookin like a good one
I really would've liked to trade down to Detroit's pick and grabbed Cutler and another offensive lineman, but I have no regrets about Ferguson. He's the best offensive line prospect since Mike Williams (of course we all know how that turned out, but it doesn't diminish Ferguson's achievements.) Plus I've never been a huge fan of Clemens. But all of that is irrelevant. We just have to have some faith in our front office and scouts that they will field a winning team.
:shit: hmy: if they're counting on noodle arm to make the playoffs, they're much dumber than we could have possibly thought.
